How to Make Percussion Sounds on the Sonicware Liven Ambient Ø | Percussion Synthesis Tutorial

video upload by Sonic Cartography

"In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to make percussion sounds on the Sonicware Liven Ambient Ø. With its combination of wavetable, ring modulation and FM synthesis, the synthesizer is surpassingly capable in this regard. It can also be a good starting point for learning about percussion synthesis (or at least it was for me). The video covers a variety of percussive sounds, including drums, high hats, and other melodic percussion sounds, reminiscent of bells, xylophones, marimbas, toy pianos etc."

By the way, I’m looking for new ideas for videos, so if you have requests, questions, topics, etc. you think I could cover, please let me know in the comments! I can't guarantee I'll cover all of them because I've making videos at a snail's pace lately, but it would really help me to know what people are actually interested in!

Dream Machine | Sonicware Liven Ambient Ø | New Set of 36 Songs

video upload by Sonic Cartography

"I haven’t had time to make videos for my channel for a while because I’ve been making Ambient Ø tutorials for the ‪@SONICWARE‬ channel’s Beginner’s Guide series. In the meantime, I’ve been accumulating lots of songs and song ideas on the synth. This is a set of most of them (some in abbreviated form), which I’m releasing all at once to sort of “clear the vault” and feel like I can start afresh with making new music. Unlike the previous collection I did, this one contains some actual ambient music—particularly the middle section. I'm not totally happy with how some of these turned out, but I'm trying to learn how to not let the perfect be the enemy of the good (enough), so I'm just going to publish this anyway... "

We are creating the Ambient Ø Beginner’s Guide series with the collaboration of Daniel Beck Rose, also known as ‪@SonicCartography‬ . This is the first video, titled 'Basic Operations & Playing Techniques', which compiles essential information for playing Ambient Ø without using the sequencer.

The second video, Sound Design, will explore deeper aspects of sound creation.

Daniel is one of the world's top experts in using Texture Lab, and his series of Tips & Tricks videos are incredibly helpful, so we highly recommend checking them out. [playlist below]

Sonicware Ambient Ø | 12 Short Songs | Imaginary Soundtrack or Something Like That...

video upload by Sonic Cartography

"I’ve had the Sonicware Ambient Ø for a couple of weeks now. At first, I made some ambient soundscapes, but then I started gravitating more toward short songs. The music felt like it had a futuristic, post-apocalyptic, cinematic vibe to it, and I started picturing things and inventing stories as I made it, and then the images and stories inspired more music, and a whole world began to materialize. If I had any skill at visual art, I’d have made some images to accompany the music, but since I don’t, I wrote some stuff instead. So, this is sort of like a soundtrack to an imaginary film—or something like that. In any case, it’s my first set of songs on this synth."

1. New Dawn | 0:00
2. Days of Dreaming | 2:05
3. Last Battle | 3:53
4. Gone | 5:21
5. Aftermath | 6:21

Dave Young (aka henderson) - Radius Music, Generative Audiovisual Device 2010

YouTube via MediaArtTube | September 20, 2010

"Two devices are situated in the room, documenting sonically and visually the dynamic real-time readings taken from the rotation ultrasonic distance sensors. As people walk in and out of the room that these devices will be placed in, they will alter the readings of distance, and therefore, the sounds too.
Radius Music combines ideas of cartography and graphic scores as a means to produce sound. The device itself is an autonomous revolving machine that reads a distance value in real-time between itself and another object. As the machine slowly rotates and scans the room, it takes this radial distance and outputs it as a relative sonic frequency and a corresponding visual score.
The synthesis techniques used to generate the audio include Frequency Modulation and Additive Synthesis, with phasing effects providing a procedural rhythmic element. The circular rotation of the piece evokes an idea of early sample culture - each device plays a loop of sound approximately 3 seconds long, sampling the position of people and objects in the space.
Built using Arduino, PureData, and Processing.
