Quad Nand Mood Cube Oscillator synth

via this auction

video at the auction and previously posted here.

"An ambient light source and square-wave nosie maker.

The synth is based around a 4093 quad nand gate CMOS chip.
Capable of hideously beautiful beepy noise.
The 4 cascaded oscillators interact with each other to create a relentless range of synth tones.
The power starve dial adds further modulation and manipulation of the oscillations.

The noise-making circuit is built into a Mood Cube I got from RED5.
The Mood Cube lights up using 3 LEDs. I hacked the circuit to affect the rate of the light cycle.
I also added a voltage starve for this circuit too. The reason being this; when the LEDs are on full power,
they drain power from the 4093. This in turn adds further lovely modulation to the tones.

The controls are as follows:
* 4 dials on top to control the rate and tone of the oscillations.
* 1 dial on the left side for the 4093 power starve.
* 2 dials on the right side. 1 for LED rate and 1 for LED intensity.
* 2 switches on the front. 1 momentary push button and 1 toggle switch.
* 1 output jack located on the back side.
* 1 on/off switch and 9v battery holder on the underside of the cube.

The cube fits well into the palm and can be enjoyed by anyone with a passion for harsh, grinding noise terrorism and pretty colours.
It's powered by a single 9v battery which is housed in the bottom of the cube.
There's a 6.35mm jack socket for hooking up to your amp/mixer/effects.
There's no internal speaker!"

Korg Poly-Ensemble

"Although it has several voices, in my opinion, the two best are "String 2" and "Organ 1" with the phase shifter fully engaged. In this mode, the effect achieved with the pitch shift dial is dramatic. Without the phase, String 1 sounds thinner to me, more like an ARP Solina."

Generative Music - Singularities

YouTube via metabog | December 01, 2010 |

"I started programming this last night.

It's inspired shamelessly by Andre Michelle's "Pulsate", with a few modifications.
http://lab.andre-michelle.com/pulsate

The circles grow, and they lose health (via Hawking Radiation, duh) when they touch, playing a plucked string sound with pitch dependant on the size of the circles.

Straight up C++ and SDL, none of this Supercollider/Processing pretentiousness."

Generative Music - Singularities (Version 2)

metabog | December 01, 2010 |

"I worked on Singularities more today, and added this neat particle/star system. I know Black Holes generally tend to suck things in rather than blow them out, but initially I wanted to do some kind of 'gravity lensing', but this came out, and I like it. Particles are shifted towards red when they accelerate, and larger circles exert a higher force.

The video is a bit choppy due to my capture software, the actual animation is smooth."

Singularities running on two laptops

"My Singularity generative music app running on two laptops at the same time, as I'm experimenting with making it interactive over the internet, so users can share the same space.

Inspired by Andre Michelle's "Pulsate".

Migrator - Virtual Analog Synth (prototype)

YouTube via metabog | November 08, 2010 |

"This is a synth I'm working on, specifically aimed at replicating the sounds of modern analog deities like Arjen Lucassen and Erik Norlander. It's pretty much your run of the mill subtractive 3-osc synthesizer... only it's MINE. And it's free. For me!

It has a couple of extra features that I wanted. The oscillators and filter have a real time, constant analog drift/dirtyness parameter, which means that you can play two oscillators at the exact same tuning and it will still phase around a bit, randomly, like a real analog synth. It makes it sound less stable, but you can turn it off. It also has couple other slight kinks would take too long to explain, but the main idea is to make it sound vintagey and "electrical" rather than precise and digital.

The interface is only a prototype.

This is a short bit of music I wrote using only Migrator."

Sympathy Networked Modular Synth

YouTube via metabog | February 06, 2011 |

"This is my Bachelor of Science final dissertation project, called Sympathy. It is a work in progress freeform modular VST Synthesizer, that will allow multiple users to interact with the same surface and make music together over the internet.

Some bugs and not fully featured yet, but the synthesis engine is almost completed!"
