"While we're speaking about the Mircowave [1], I have often searched the net for a comprehensive description of the ROM wavetables in the Microwave (and the newer Waldorf synths).

There are scattered descriptions [2] on the net of the wavetables and the excellent reference of the first 27 wavetables with waveform graphs but, surprisingly, apparently no document which describes all waveforms in one place (or I just couldn't find one).

So I compiled the available information into a table and added some of my own observations. You can download it here:

Please note that while the blog article is in German [Googlish here], the document is in English. Also available there is a small Python-Snippet that has the wavetable data in computer-digestible form for you hackers out there.

Though the document lists the Microwave wavetables only, it should be of interest to Blofeld and Largo Users as well, since their wavetables are basically the same, except that they have three extra wavetables from the Q/microQ and the PPG."

An electronic instrument, often played with a keyboard, that combines simple waveforms to produce more complex sounds, such as those of various other instruments

Traditional Sample-based synthesis:
One of the easiest synthesis systems is to record a real instrument as a digitized waveform, and then play back its recordings at different speeds to produce different tones. This is the technique used in "sampling". Most samplers designate a part of the sample for each component of the ADSR envelope, and then repeat that section while changing the volume for that segment of the envelope. This lets the sampler have a persuasively different envelope using the same note."
