"light sensitive device responding to ambient infrared light from the sun. At sunset and sunrise the intensity of light causes the array of 64 infrared photosensors to randomly trigger for about five minutes (before this time they are over-saturated and cannot reset to an "off" state, and after this time there is not enough light to produce an "on" message). This stream of random data was sent to an additive synthesis patch in Max/MSP: in effect, translating ambient light into ambient sound.

patch is '"slide" by tehn for monome
filmed at sunset at gasworks park in seattle

Record playing

YouTube Uploaded by coldhandmurr on Jun 25, 2011

"Didn't rehearse much for this.. I'm sure it could be developed further with more attention to the textures of the slipmat and chassis, some objects dropped on the platter, etc. The side of the record used is simply a silent groove; aged around 44 years in who knows what conditions. (The flip side is a kids' story about magnetism.)

Chain:
Silent groove side of record
Shure MC25C cart
Numark Pro TT-1 turntable
Rolls VP29 preamp
DIY TL074-based mixer
TC Electronic Fireworx
Echo Audio Audiofire2
Adobe Audition
Adobe Premiere"
