Quantized Noise

Update: stereo version added further below.

"When I came up with the patch for this video, I though it would make a nice 3-5 minute video, but get boring fast after that. Well, now it's done, and it's 3 times that long. Sorry. If you make it all the way through, you deserve a medal.

How do you get quantized noise? Start with white noise, then use a sample and hold to grab pitches from it, then run those pitches through a quantizer. Easy! The Noise and Sample and Hold come from a MOTM 101, clocked with the 4ms SCM/RCD. Then, we add some bells and whistles to make it more interesting. I added a slow ramp wave from a MOTM 320 to give the random pitches an ascending shape. Then, I'm using the Synthesis Technology e350 Morphing Terrarium for the basic sounds - the X, Y and Z cv ins are being modulated by the dual wogglebug and the MOTM 380 quad LFO. The XY out of the e350 is going to the left side of the Thonk Music Thing Dual Spring Reverb, and the Z out of the e350 is going to a Synthesis Technology e580 Sampling Mini-Delay, which delays the signal one beat, and the wet signal is going to the right side of the Reverb.

I'm using the Craig Lee 8 Channel Quantizer, only one channel of it. I step through all the available scales on it. I'm using it in Sample and Hold mode, driven from the same 4ms SCM/RCD, otherwise the slow ramp wave would introduce all kinds of glitched notes.

The Thonk Music Thing Modular Dual Spring Reverb is new to me, and I'm messing with it a lot here. It starts out fairly dry, and I crank up the reverb a little bit at a time. I also switch between the spring tanks and the digital brick, somewhat randomly - when the 2 switches are up, it's the brick; down, it's the spring tanks."

"Just before work today- I switched on the experiments again! Here we have a new filter type that I've been working on- it's very squelchy at the poit of self oscillation. I've used a Korg SQ-10 sequerncer as a modulating oscillator, a function generator sweeping a low freq triangle waveform and a Macbeth X-Series Oscillator for the audio......also- I'm using my experimental 'tape delay simulator' stuff! I just wanted to record this before I take it down for work again...one of those patches!"
