"3 oscillator semi-modular synth, complex modulation capabilities, MIDI & CV control.

Probably no other monophonic analog synth has this amount of sound-bending capabilities at your fingertips on an ultra-compact footprint. Directly prepatched and switchable are:

VCO2 synchable to VCO1
VCO3 can modulate either VCO2 (only) or VCO1 + 2
VCO3 can modulate the filter
VCO3 can be taken out of the audio path completely, becoming an 'invisible' source for modulation only
the filter envelope (VCF) can modulare VCO2 ('sweep VCO')
VCF has two modes of keytracking
both LFOs can control VCOs AND filter cutoff at the same time and with independent settings
LFO1 can do S&H by sampling LFO2 (making them interdependent) or the noise generator
oh, there actually is an "OSC4" which is white noise (with its own level control), in addition to the white noise setting on VCO3 and the white noise setting on LFO2. That's 3 noise generators in just one synth.

"If you know what this is, you know the deal. If you don’t, i can just tell you that it is the best of the best modern boutique synthesizers. Ken Macbeth is a genius, and this is a masterpiece.

In excellent condition, but the spring reverb kind of comes and goes. My guess is a loose connection, but I haven’t opened it to check."

"Latest project (remastered 1-21-2025) entailing a 1 pass performance, i.e. no overdubbed tracks. However, significant timing and note corrections/enhancements were made to midi tracks prior to generating some of the audio stems; especially the foot pedal bass notes - uggh! Extensive use of Reaper automation envelopes were used to control the sounds in real time.

Additional Synths Used: Cwejman S1 MKII/Voyager (funk bass & more);

Soft-Synths Used: Native Instruments The Giant/Scarbee Classic EP-88s, Sonic Projects OPX Pro-3 (arpegiated sounds), UHe Diva (lead), Arturia Mellotron V, UHe Repro 5, TAL Vocoder, Orange Tree Samples EAG Steel Strings (NI Kontact);

Offward Bound is my little play on words pertaining to major life transitions such as retirement (a popular topic in my sphere these days). It seems to be all about the moving on, i.e. what are you going to do now? But there’s also the lingering moving off components. Bla bla bla. Anyway, moving on…

The intro melody is from my last composition Sploot’n. If I was putting together an album/cd it might be more obvious."

"At first glance, the EL2 features a classical, subtractive signal flow. A closer look then reveals some cool oddities like unconventional filter slopes, extensively equipped modulators, a band echo simulation and a spring reverb. The EL2 features a completely discrete circuit design. Its sound is creamy and fat at the same time. Thanks to NOS components, the instrument has a nice vintage vibe. Compared to its predecessor, the EL2 offers some very useful additions. – Especially its three oscillators have been extended considerably."

But what if it were possible to play this synth with unlimited polyphony, in real time? Let's find out!

Some additional information:

The explanation of the first patch was simplified. There are a couple of issues to contend with when generating polyphonic parts from a monosynth. There isn’t just one buffer in use, rather multiple in action. Every note on rotates the buffer to be recorded into. This allows the notes of the previous chord to die away while the next chord starts to play, if the playback speed for those previous notes still leaves some signal to be played.

Another issue has to do with recording. A new note on should kill recording into the previous buffer. Otherwise, the notes of the previous chord still in action will start playing a recording of the new note on. I made this selectable in the first patch, because the effect may be desirable from an aesthetic viewpoint.

One more consideration when using an analogue synth controlled with CV and gate as the sound source. If notes are already being held down when the source synth is retriggered, the gate will remain high. As a result, the envelope will not restart. Therefore it’s best to use an envelope generator which is able to be retriggered, like the Intellijel Dual ADSR. That way, every new incoming note will retrigger the envelope.

One last thing: neither version of the patch compensates for audio latency, which means that lower notes are a little late to start."
