Every instrument that we take for granted was once born of a desire to create a sound and interact with the sonic universe in a new way. The Elta Music Solar 50 is an excellent example of a new perspective on familiar ideas, and today we're going to explore it with our pal Brian!

Song for Ukraine

video upload by Woody Piano Shack

"Like everyone in the world,
I am shocked and horrified by recent events.

I wrote "Song For Kataryna" years ago
for the people of Pripyat and Chernobyl.

I hope it is appropriate to play it again now.

Your country is not far from where I live
and I think of you as neighbours.

You are in my thoughts every minute of the day.

To the brave citizens of Russia who risk everything
to protest against the war

I salute you, and thank you.
Continue to be strong.

To the peaceful people of Ukraine who
are enduring a terrifying ordeal

And those fighting to defend their country

I give you my heart and hopes."

Taetro: In Sequence - That's An Unlock // Novation

video upload by NovationTV

"In this Artist: In Sequence episode, we caught up with Taetro, a producer/content creator living in Los Angeles, CA.

Taetro ran us through his thought process on making music, and how studio gear and the music community offer inspiration. Looking at the Launchkey range, he also shared some of his favourite features of the range and why it's a staple tool in his studio.

No Pop No Fun by Chinaski

https://chinaski-sfx.bandcamp.com/album/no-pop-no-fun

"Preview the album here.

For an understanding of the past, you have to look to the future – or was it the other way round? No matter how you want to put it, some things are an aesthetic choice, and the meaning of style does not necessarily go hand in hand with the latest fashion fad or an incurable retromania. Chinaski’s debut (album under that name) on Running Back seems predestined to resume these discussions. Drenched in sepia colors and faded VHS tapes memories, fed by a science-fiction that never became a fact, essentially made with the ultramodern instruments of yesteryear (see back cover for further reference) that became redundant through their own relatives and a need to ensure efficiency (time, space, money), it’s either concept art, an ode to Disco Piu, a post card from the early days of Frankfurt’s Dorian Gray or the search and itch for a time machine.

All of the debate above is rendered useless by the title though: No Pop, No Fun! And those are the main musical reference points here: instrumental pop that you can dance to, pastel melodies that stick with you and fun frequencies. Downtempo ballads for video game characters in love meet cabriolet anthems and... more

Turning the dial on some alien shore

video upload by junklight

"An ambient improvisation full of chittering rhythms

featuring a couple of new toys - ditto looper (not seen in the video - I'm actually using as a foot pedal!), Manifold Research Tetragrid and a Percall - which frees up a lot of modules & wires since the whole percussion envelope/vca setup is something I use a lot"

Live annotated performance: Buchla 208c Easel Command avant-garde synthesizer electronic music

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"I am using the Buchla 208c music Easel Command along with the Make Noise 0-ctrl as a stand in for the 218 touch controller and wanted to explore how to use a patch that my 3 year old son put together. I am using annotations to try to teach some of my thought process when I'm making these improvisations. This is entirely live and unrehearsed. The goal of this piece of electronic music was to find musical ways to use the combination of the Pulsar to pitch with the Envelope Generator to Timbre in the complex oscillator. I was able to pull off his favorite sounds: Ambulance and Truck Motor. The combination of the two modulations allows me to create some interesting rhythmic concepts. This is a relatively simple patch and doesn't need many connections to get something that can sound extremely complex. I am using the west coast technique of starting with something and spinning it out like a centrifuge. I'm processing the sound through a few eurorack modules that I will detail below. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!

Patch Notes:
Buchla 208c Easel Command audio to 4ms Tapographic Delay to Make Noise X-pan controlled by Intellijel Quadrax and Tangle Quartet. Audio from Eurorack output to Boss RC-5 loop pedal and Eventide H9 reverb.
Live patching: in annotations"

Zen & the Art of Synthesizer Maintenance - Tracking Early Korg Serial Numbers

Supporting member Electropict wrote in to let us know about their website Zen & the Art of Synthesizer Maintenance, and specifically an interesting project they took up during the lockdown.

"Whilst under pandemic lockdown last year, I started compiling information on early Korg serial numbers, which has gradually turned into a group of pages with about two thousand of them, of which about eighteen hundred have Matrixsynth references. (I think my curiosity got the better of me.)

There are, at last count, forty-four potential corrections, some of which are very interesting imho, and many of which are only obvious once you've understood the early Korg systems. (Hopefully these pages will be a useful reference in future, for anyone interested.)

The main page of all early Korg serials Iʼve found, which I'm updating about once a week: https://zasm.earth/korg-serials

The original idea, considering MS-20s in more detail, in its own page: https://zasm.earth/korg-ms20-serials-characteristics

And a page about one of the more interesting corrections - two MS-20s with the same serial number. https://zasm.earth/twynthesisers"

Be sure to see the rest of Zen & the Art of Synthesizer Maintenance for additional synth resources while there.
