"The Yamaha CS-50, released in 1977, is a 4-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer known for delivering the iconic "CS" sound—famously associated with the CS-80—in a more portable and accessible package. While it only has one VCO per voice and lacks the ribbon controller of its larger siblings, it retains the expressive optical aftertouch and unique 12dB/oct lowpass/highpass filters that define the series' organic character.

Oscillators: 4 total (1 VCO per voice).
Keyboard: 49 keys with pressure-sensitive (aftertouch) routing to multiple destinations.

Jaap Vink and Recursive Sound

"Jaap Vink was a technician and teacher at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht from 1967 until his retirement in 1993. During that time he pioneered numerous techniques for the analog realization of dense electronic sounds and was a key collaborator of Roland Kayn in the 1970's and 1980's. Vink was always in search of sounds that would break the inherent periodicity of electronics, and found that feedback was the key.

This video is the first in a mini-series looking at Vink's techniques which were documented by the fantastic retrospective double LP on Recollections GRM."

"This video shows a feedback patch that includes a delay (Studer A80 tape recorder), a ring modulator, a reverb (Lexicon PCM 90) and a modified Bruel & Kjaer third-octave filter. The technique was developed by Jaap Vink in the 1970s at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht and can be heard in works by many composers, particularly those of Roland Kayn.
This video is dedicated to Jaap Vink and was recorded and edited by Siamak Anvari."

"In 1970 Roland Kayn moved to the Netherlands and began working at the Instituut voor Sonologie in Utrecht with two very important people - Jaap Vink and Léo Küpper. There he began to refine and expand his ideas of cybernetic music and his first large scale piece was Simultan - realized primarily in Bruxelles using Léo Küpper's home built GAME (Générateur Automatique de Musique Electronique) synthesizer.

In this video we look at some of the ideas behind Simultan and use those principles to create multiple simultaneous processes which influence each other.
