Technology, Creativity, and Synthesizers | Make Noise

video upload by MAKEN0ISE

"Technology has always been a part of the development of music. People in the past have imagined many possible musical futures, and sewn the seeds that led us to where we are today. Let's start thinking about some of the ways musicians have utilized encounters with technology to create new forms.

Jaap Vink and the Institute of Sonology

video upload by La Synthèse Humaine

"Jaap Vink was a technician and teacher at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht from 1967 until his retirement in 1993. During that time he pioneered numerous techniques for the analog realization of dense electronic sounds and was a key collaborator of Roland Kayn in the 1970's and 1980's. Vink was always in search of sounds that would break the inherent periodicity of electronics, and found that feedback was the key.

This video is the third and last in a mini-series looking at Vink's techniques which were documented by the fantastic retrospective double LP on Recollections GRM. We look at two patches which are structured around two voices arising from interrelated trigger sequences.

Loop with SLOOP -- New Firmware for the FM-1

video upload by substatica drones

"SLOOP adds four-track looping to the M-VAVE FM-1, so I used it to build a complete loop from scratch. SLOOP turns the FM-1 into a four-track groovebox you play live: three synths and a drum machine with 16 sounds on the white keys, nine synthesis engines, 68 sounds, 37 drum kits, your own samples, a song mode you play with your hands, and more.
