Roland System 101

images via this auction
"The Synthesizer 101 section is a fully self-contained analog mono-synth. It features a 37-note keyboard (with no performance controls, velocity or aftertouch), and lots of sliders to tweak. Its design is similar to the SH-series analog synths. Controls for the VCO, LFO, VCF lowpass/highpass filters, VCA with ADSR, Noise, and Portamento/Glide effects are all within hands reach. There's also a handy A-440Hz tuning oscillator, like on the Minimoog."

MOTM uVCA

via this auction

" From: http://www.synthtech.com/motm190.html

The MOTM-190 is a dual VCA in a compact 1U format. VCA #1 can also be used as a Ring Modulator.

Voltage Controlled Amplifier #1 - Ring Mod
The top knob (marked BLEND) and switch (marked V and R) control VCA #1. If the switch is in the 'V' position, the circuit is a linear VCA. The BLEND control acts as an Initial Gain control, normalized to unity. If BLEND is all the way to the left (the IN position), the gain is unity ('1') and there is no modulation (the output equals the input). As the BLEND knob is turned clockwise, more and more of the CV modulates the signal. Fully clockwise (the RM position), the CV changes the gain from 0 to 1. This is 'standard' VCA operation.

If the switch is in the 'R' position, the circuit is a Ring Modulator. The BLEND control acts the same way as a Yamaha CS-80: all the way to the left, the output = the input. As BLEND is turned to the 'RM' position, the depth of the Ring Mod effect increases.

Voltage Controlled Amplifier #2
The second VCA is switchable between Linear and Exponential responses. The GAIN control sets the initial gain from 0 to 1. The CV MOD control ajusts the depth of AM for the VCA (in normal operation, the GAIN is set to '0' and the CV MOD is set to '10').
Although 'micro' in size, the MOTM-190 is a low-noise, low distortion, high dynamic range (better than 100dB) dual VCA. The Ring Modulator BLEND control is not found on any other modular.

Threshold - Lainhart Performance in New York City October 16

via Richard Lianhart:
"Friends: on Thursday, October 16, at Judson Church in New York City, I'll be performing the premiere of my EMF-commissioned piece "Threshold", for electric guitar and Kyma, as part of the Ear To The Earth 2008 New York Soundscape festival.

Here are the details, and an excerpt
More about New York Soundscape

"Threshold" creates its soundscape through a process called cross-filtering, which runs on the Kyma system. In cross-filtering, the tonal characteristics of one sound, called the impulse response, are imposed on another, called the source, so that the end result is a sound that contains only the characteristics common to both. In this case, ambiences recorded in and around New York provide the source, and my guitar playing provides the impulse response. You hear neither directly, but only the result of the interaction between me and my environment.

Recording sources and locations: street traffic during a cab ride from 53rd Street to 89th Street; the lobby of the Museum of Modern Art, and a floor buffer in a side gallery; the lobby and galleries of the Guggenheim Museum; a trash compacter in the mid-50s; an air-conditioning compressor in the mid-50s; an industrial document shredder in the mid-80s; Olafur Elliason's New York Waterfall #4 at Pier 35; traffic on the FDR Drive at South Street; nocturnal insects and thunderstorms in Rockland County.

In addition, I'll be showing my short film LUX while performing a new live soundtrack consisting of the same NY sound sources used in Threshold, but this time processed with realtime spectral transformations to create a unique new ambience.

Those interested may download my original environmental sound source mix here, to do with as you wish:

Thanks, and I hope to see you there."

YouTube via ladorade84860. Moog Prodigy. I'm guessing that's a Novation V-Station keyboard in the beginning. Note the purpose of posting these videos is to get a sense of the sound character of the synth however large or small that may be. It's never about the performance, although sometimes they can be entertaining. ;) Squint those ears!
