This new offering from *Buchla is a blend of the classic Music Easel and the 50th-anniversary edition, designed to appeal to fans of the old school style briefcase enclosure. Priced at 5,000 US Street, the Music Easel Retro features an aluminum suitcase design and retro Rogan knobs, providing a nostalgic yet modern experience. With improvements such as USB-C, 5-pin MIDI over 3.5-millimeter jack, and enhancements from over 50 years of history, the Music Easel Retro offers a unique blend of past and present technology.

During the interview, Nick demonstrated the capabilities of the Music Easel Retro, showcasing a repeating ostinato and complex oscillator sounds. With features like sequential voltages in four-step mode and pitch modulation inputs, the Music Easel Retro offers a versatile and dynamic sound palette. Nick also utilized the Maris LVX stereo delay pedal and internal spring reverb to further enhance the sonic possibilities.

"I've pieced together a Buchla 208C, Buchla 218e V3 and placed it lovingly in a custom Haliburton case by Luther. I am including the Buchla 208 Preset Manager and a Portabellabz Stoned Marten LPG+ADSR card. I'm also including a handful of cables. Everything is in mint condition.

This is essentially the same as the Buchla 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition that will be available for preorder next month for 10k. The case is nearly identical minus the retro colors, knobs, and midi and I/O options."

Superbooth 2023: Buchla - Limited Edition Music Easel

"Nick from Buchla showed us their limited edition 50th Anniversary Music Easel. This special edition includes classic 208 voices and original old-school knobs and meter from the 70s. It comes with a gold keyboard and will be sold with its original Halliburton metal briefcase. The Music Easel has the same patching and control interface as the original, and the new edition even has some added extras like patch points and midi over USB-C.

Nick also demonstrated Buchla's Program Manager Card, which allows users to scroll through and select sounds. The card can be embedded below the surface of the module using the embedding kit offered by Buchla, perfect for those who are always using it and don't want it sticking out, or cards be inserted into the edge connector as usual. The new Music Easel is expected to ship in the fall alongside the special edition, which is available for order in June only.

Unlike many iconic technologies, the influence was not grown through force of scale, but rather the force of the ideas. The Music Easel made available virtually every musical dimension: timbre, melody, rhythm, and time; how these dimensions intersected was no longer the court of acoustics and material, but signals and voltage. The 208 Stored Program Sound Source engendered “a new functional organization [with a] particularly rapid system of patching and program storage via plug-in cards.”
