Exploring the Cosmic Beauty of the Elgam Carousel

video upload by HAINBACH

"Form changes function - the Elgam Carousel first appeared as part of a big organ. Elgam quickly realized that they could a make a standalone product out of this, for the more mobile musicians entertaining crowds at business and family functions. They set a trend - CRB and Elka followed with the Computerband 2000 and Wilgamat. These standalone keyboards can be called the first groove boxes. In this video I demo this cosmic sounding wonder and show real world applications in scoring.

via this auction

Note the listing is for only 1 unit.

"The Elka Wilgamat was an accompaniment unit intended as an add-on to some of Elka's organ line and also as a standalone unit with dedicated 2 octave keyboard. It consists of a rhythm unit, a bass section and a chord section. All sounds are of course fully analog. It is very similar in features and sound to theGodwin Drummaker, Wersi Wersimatic WM24, Elgam Carousel or Böhm Böhmat."

UNBOXING THE ELGAM CRAZY BAND 48

video upload by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"We were super excited to receive this unicorn, vintage groove box - the machine that was the very last breath of the Elgam in 1982 - it was shipped out as the company folded.
The Elgam Crazy Band 48 was the follow up to the now sought-after Elgam Carousel and it shares some of its functions but not any of it's components, schematics or architecture.
The unit was well packed in a sturdy box but only emit a loud hiss and one single note on arrival.
Yep - this is often the reality of unboxing vintage gear.
This machine is now in the shop for repairs but it's a long journey to get it back up and running - if it ever will. The music in the background is from a similar device we demo:ed in an earlier video : the Godwin Drummaker 45."

WERSI WERSIMATIC II

video upload by

"It's still here and we love it - so here we go again with new music :
The Wersimatic II - the previous generation of the Wersimatic 24 auto-accompaniment machine and probably familiar to fans of the Elgam Carousel, Böhm Solist 78, Elka Wilgamat and Godwin Drummaker 45 units.

The Wersimatic II has 4 sections on board:
Bass line tone generator
Drum machine with individual mute options
Various chord sounds
Various Arpeggiator sounds (same sounds as chords but with busier patterns)

The bass sounds great - very nice and analog.
Drum sounds are very analog - this is sound generation in its infancy - the hi-hats scare me :)
The chord and arpeggiator sounds were processed through the Digitech Synth Wah - a relatively cheap envelope follower pedal that’s a great bang for the buck.

The sounds and controls are across the board identical to the Wersimatic 24 unit as far as we can tell but the difference being the Wersimatic II was never made as a stand-alone unit - it was part of a large, double manual organ called Wersi Helios.
This particular one is unique : it has been transplanted from that organ into a smaller box with a twelve buttons acting as chord control instead of the two bottom octaves of the organ.

Special thanks to Organfairy for the rare schematics that were necessary to complete the repair : dude you f-ing rock

video upload by EMEAPP

"A synth and a groove machine! How cool is this little vintage Italian beast! It even has "crazy hands" and ragtime"! The Elgam Carousel is just one of those unique instuments that beautifully straddles the line between awesome and cheesy, but we love cheese around here too! In this episode of Sonic Test Drive, join electronic music pioneer Don Slepian as he takes you through the ins and outs of this rare oddity from the mid 70s."

Elgam Match 15 C (1971) vintage analog drum machine! The First Elgam Rhythm Box!

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Extremely rare analog drum machine Elgam Match 15 C! This gorgeous analog rhythm box - made in Italy in 1971 – is the first electronic drum machine produced by Elgam, the italian brand that also invented the legendary Elgam Carousel in the same years! This gem is the same rhythm section that was then assembled on the Elgam Carousel! Extremely rare and highly collectable! It’s born in 1971, so this year this little gem turns 50 years old! The item is fully working and in very good cosmetical conditions for its age: the drum machine sounds great and works perfectly! The rhythms are mixable and very cool. It has a characteristic fat warm sound especially with a nice tape delay and reverb added. The tempo slows things right down and you can get some unintential sounds out of this piece of kit. For example, you could use it running through distortion pedals to get some interesting riff style sounds! On YouTube you can find a video of the smallest model of the same serie: the Elgam Match 7C!" [demos in previous posts here]

Exploring the Wersimatic II

video upload by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"Another take with the Wersimatic II, the older sister / brother of the Wersimatic 24 auto-accompaniment machine and distant cousin to the Elgam Carousel, Böhm Solist 78, Elka Wilgamat and Godwin Drummaker 45.

The Wersimatic II was never made as a stand-alone unit but was part of a large, double manual organ called Wersi Helios in the mid 70s.

Exploring the Wersimatic WM 24

video upload by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"We thought there wasn't really anything decent info out there on this rarity so here's a video that sheds some light on the Wersi Wersimatic 24 A & B units.

Wersimatic 24 is an analog drum machine, bass / chord arpeggiator generator similar to the Elgam Carousel, Elka Wilgamat, Godwin Drummaker 45 and Böhm Solist units, The Wersimatic 24 was manufactured in Germany in the early 1970s.
These were also part of various model Wersi organs of the era, such as the Helios that featured the "Wersimatic II" auto-comp section and they seem to be identical in controls and sounds.
The Wersimatic 24 is a bit different than your regular auto-accompaniment machine since the keyboard is a separate instrument: it holds the circuit boards and sound generators for the melodic section and sports its own volume slider and audio jack output.
The keyboard is powered by the drum machine unit via a DIN cable though, and the tempo is regulated on the drum machine as well.

24 drum patterns with 8 mutable sounds
12 rhythmic chord/bass/arpeggiator patterns
Bass section with one sound
3 chord sounds
2 arpeggiator sounds (the second arpeggiator sound is not functioning at the moment)

The bass covers two octaves, which is rare for this type of machine (the Elgam Carousel, Elka Wilgamat has a one octave bass section only) and can generate almost synth like arpeggiator patterns.

We like this machine a lot, especially the bass section and the drum sounds are really raw and industrial sounding.

Sorry for dirty fingernails, it's black paint residue - not dirt - promise.

The Forgotten Synthesizers Of Marche Region

video upload by HAINBACH

Update: you can find additional posts featuring The Museo Del Synth Marchigiano here.

"The Marche Region in Italy was home to a thriving industry of music instrument production from the 1950s to the mid-90s. Tens of thousands of people made organs, accordions and small runs of synthesizers that were like nothing else in the world. Much production closed in the 90s, leaving only a few companies around, and many people lost their jobs. The history of Marche synths was not talked about, too bitter were the memories. The Museo Del Synth Marchigiano aims to change that - a motley crew of synth lovers work together to get the story about this special time in music instrument history out.

I was invited to play a show at Acusmatic Festival in Ancona and visit the collection before. I was overwhelmed by the amazing sounds these machines made, so I captured them on tape and for use in my performance. I also just had to film every synth I could get my hand for you to enjoy. You will find instruments by Siel, Elka, Elgan, Farfisa, Crumar, CRB and more here.

Elgam was the Italian brand that produced many legendary instruments, including the Elgam Carousel. Based in Marche, Italy, in the same area where Elka, Eko, Farfisa, Crumar, Jen, Siel, Solton, CRB, etc. were born.

It’s born in 1970s! The item is fully working and in good cosmetical conditions for its age: on the surface there are scratches here and there (please, check all the photos), but the drum machine sounds great and works perfectly!

It has a characteristic fat warm sound especially with a nice tape delay and reverb added. The tempo knob slows things right down and you can get some unintential sounds out of this piece of kit. VAI 49 Elgam Carousel - Farfisa Syntorchestra

video by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"Great fun with the classic Italian Auto-comp machine and mono/poly keyboard.
With some external help from a Binson Echorec 2, a Schulte Compact Phasing A, the mysterious Emthree Pulsatron multi-effect and some delay."

VAI 48 Elgam Carousel / Farfisa Syntorchestra

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"We wanted to make a song with unadulterated sounds from the Elgam Carousel, plug and play as you say these days. This is one take with the Carousel, mono out, with some Farfisa Syntorchestra flourishes.
Just a little compression and spring reverb on The Carousel and some Roland Re-301 on the Syntorchestra.
None of the instruments are properly tuned when we recorded this so don’t look to close on the fingerwork ;)

Headphones are highly recommended since the bass line generator on these is fantastic.

We then of course turned around and made a heavily adulterated track, lots of effects, will post next week.
This one is for sale, it's in amazing condition, see earlier post for price and shipping.

We’re a tracking studio and as gear vendor in the hills of Florence.
We make these videos for fun when there’s not that much to do in the studio, sloppy playing and mixing aside - it will def sound better with headphones on."
