FORMANTA EMS-01 is an electronical music instrument combining a polyphonic organ and a monophonic synthesizer. It is designed to perform music of all genres and to create various sound effects while recording soundtracks for movies and plays, or studio recording. The organ has a 5-octave keyboard, 6 preset sound timbres, frequency vibrato with adjustable vibrato delay, decay adjustment and a stereophaser (both for organ and synthesizer). The "vibrato delay" scheme is activated again only after all the previously pressed keys are released. In the "legato" mode the "vibrato delay" scheme is not activated.

Besides, the synthesizer is able to simultaneously control one more similar synthesizer through a special cable and connectors CONTR IN and CONTR OUT.
The instrument provides the opportunity of connecting stereo headphones; the volume in headphones doesn't change in case of changing the volume of the instrument from zero to maximum at all the outputs of the instrument with the foot pedal; thanks to this, preliminary control of timbre through the headphones before applying it to amplifiers is possible. By switching on PHASER into the channel of organ or synthesizer, it is possible to get stereo sound in the outputs STEREO L and STEREO P. In case PHASER is switched off, both channels will function in MONO mode.

"This synth was developed in USSR in 80-s years on the same military radio plant in Kachkanar where well known Polivoks synth was produced. Perhaps, Formanta ems-01 is most unusual sounding synth among the soviet made synthesizers. Its modulation possibilities are infinite, raw analog sound is absolutely unique, and it looks like peace of rock.

Let’s see overal architecture of the instrument. Instrument has two sections. The first section is analog mono-synth with two oscillators. It is the wild heart of the beast. Synth has 3-octave keyboard based on electromagnetic elements. It means that contacts of the keys will last forever. Every oscillator has triangle, saw and square waveforms. You can change square’s pulse width by knob or modulate it by LFO. Audio diapason of the every oscillator changes from 16’ to 2’. Mixer section has 5 knobs for control of amount audio from: 1 osc., 2 osc., external input, noise source, ring modulator. Then there is flexible LFO with controllable delay onboard. LFO has 6 waveforms: noise, sample-and-hold, two types of saw, square and sine. You can route LFO to modulate: every oscillator pitch, filter’s cutoff, VCA. Then you can switch LFO to trigger VCA and VCF envelopes, and you can modulate speed of LFO from keytracking. There is a ring modulator. You can switch input signals for ring modulator as 1osc. and 2osc., or as 1osc. and LFO. Then we have unique analog filter based on the same circuitry which used in Polivoks synth. You can control filter’s resonanse and cutoff by knobs, amount of modulation from LFO to cutoff, amount of modulation from dedicated AR envelope. Filter can be switched in low-pass mode or in band-pass mode. Filter’s envelope can be switched to positive or negative direction. Also we have VCA with dedicated ADSR envelope with autotrigger possibility. There is a portamento. You can adjust its time and switch off portamento from second oscillator and to get very special effect, this feature also borrowed from Polivoks synth. There are also: memory for last pushed key, slide knob which change overal tune in about 3 octaves, interval knob for detuning oscillators in about 1 octave, detune knob for detuning oscillators in about 1 ton range. Synth section has factory installed CV-in in Hz/Volt scale, but for its own gate trigger signals standard.

Then there is second section of instrument. It is analog organ with 5 octave keyboard also on electromagnetic contacts. Organ has 6 preset sounds. For organ you can control: tune, amount of pitch modulation from dedicated triangle lfo, frequency of pitch modulation, delay of pitch modulation. Some organ’s preset sounds feed to rich analog 3-stage chorus effect. Then you can independently route synthesizer and organ to exellent analog stereo-phaser effect. Stereo-phaser has control of resonanse. On the back of the instrument there are outs for phones, audio mono sum, audio stereo outs, and input for pedal controller. Also there are CV-in, CV-out and external audio in.

"It was made in Soviet Union at well-known Kachkanar (Polivoks) factory. This 2-manual instrument combines mono analog synthesizer and poly analog organ/strings. Synth has double OSC, noise generator, many different types of modulation, excellent analog filters, stereo phaser, ring modulator etc. Organ has several timbres with vibrato and chorus. It’s great instrument for any music styles and sound fx design. Sound is very original, warm and really individual! I think EMS-01 sounds more interesting than well-known Polivoks and many other popular analog synths. By the way, Formanta EMS-01’s retail was 3 times more than Polivoks in USSR!"

"The combined electro-musical instrument "FORMANTA EMS-01" integrates two instruments: a polyphonic organ and a monophonic synthesizer. It is designed for performing musical compositions of any genre and obtaining various sound effects for film scoring, theatrical performances, and studio recordings.

The organ features a five-octave keyboard, six fixed sound timbres, frequency vibrato with adjustable delay, decay adjustment, and a stereo phaser (common for both the organ and the synthesizer). The vibrato delay scheme only starts with each subsequent keypress after releasing the previously pressed keys. In "legato" play, the vibrato delay scheme does not activate.

The synthesizer includes:

A three-octave keyboard.
A modulator with modulating voltage supplied to the frequency modulator (FM), width modulator (WM), filter, and amplitude modulator (amplifier).
Generator 1, generator 2 – wide-range generators with various waveform oscillations.
Mixer for summing signals from generator 1, generator 2, noise generator, external source, and ring modulator.
Filter for dynamically and statically changing the spectrum of the summed signal from the mixer output.
Amplifier to impart characteristics typical of various signal envelopes to the sound.
Clear separation of the synthesizer panel into the listed modules, their mutual arrangement, facilitate orientation when creating different timbres.

Additionally, the synthesizer can control another identical synthesizer. To achieve this, connect the control output connector of the controlling synthesizer to the control input connector of the controlled synthesizer using a connecting cable (according to the electrical schematic diagram of CONTROL INPUT and CONTROL OUTPUT connectors, see Appendix 3). Press the CONTROL - button on the controlled synthesizer (the LED should light up). In this case, the control panel of the controlled synthesizer is disconnected from its keyboard and connected to the keyboard of the controlling synthesizer. Thus, one musician has at their disposal two identical control panels with one keyboard, allowing for two fully parallel synthesis channels, greatly expanding the possibilities for creating sounds.

The instrument provides the option to connect stereo headphones. When adjusting the instrument's volume with the foot pedal from maximum to zero, the signal to the headphones remains unchanged on all instrument outputs, allowing for preliminary control of the timbre through headphones before sending the signal to power amplifiers. When the PHASER is activated in the synthesizer or organ channel on the STEREO L and STEREO R jacks, a stereo signal can be obtained. When the PHASER is disabled in both channels, the MONO mode will be implemented.

Technical specifications include power supply from an AC voltage of 220 ± 10 V, frequency of 50 Hz, power consumption not exceeding 75 V A, and operational capability within specified temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure conditions. The relative frequency drift over 4 hours of continuous operation is no more than +0.5%. The organ keyboard spans 5 octaves, and its sound range goes from F sharp (43.65 Hz) in the control octave to E in the third octave (1318 Hz). The synthesizer keyboard spans 3 octaves, and its sound range spans 9 octaves. The tuning range for both the organ and synthesizer is +6% (+0.5 tones), with a smooth detuning range of generator 2 relative to generator 1 of at least 1 octave. The frequency cutoff of the filter can be tuned in the range of 100 to 1500 Hz. The dynamic range is not less than 55 dB, and the weight does not exceed 40 kg.
