Atomika // Cold War Chic is A Blast From The Past
video upload by Starsky Carr
"Can the Cherry Audio Atomika get close to Comrade Polivoks. A comparison of the Atomika vs Polivoks. The Polivoks was one of the more unpredictable and 'lively' synths to hit the market in the 80s, and being from behind the Iron Curtain in the height of the Cold War gives it a cool dystopian charisma and mystique that can't be matched by those week willed Westerners and their predictable and controllable instruments of capitalism :).
It was built using electronics not intended for audio use and as such has a unique character and a whole dollop of charm...
... and yes I recently watched Threads so the intro demo does have a faint whiff of post apocalyptic 1980's depression.
oh and I know it should be pronounced Makina Bristronica.. I've no idea why I said Masheena, but fully expecting to be pulled up on it!"

Polivoks with midi and amazing mods

"First, let me say: if you want the sound of polivoks - you need original polivoks, don't fool yourself buying eurorack modules or small tabletop clones. The sound of Polivoks is not just filter or waveforms of OSCs, it's the entire circuitry with it's artifacts and tiny things which sum together: noises, distortions, crosstalks, limiting etc..

Polivoks Clone Limited to 100 Units & A Note From Creators Alex Pleninger & Alexey Taber
The new Polivoks clone from Alex Pleninger is now available for order, and for auction on the official site for the new synth. The units will be limited to 100 units. The starting price if you go the auction route? $1850.

"Hello everybody,
Many of you could already hear that our Polivoks' first and only run is on auction now.
Do believe, this decision is not ours and has no connection with us at all.
Anyway, we are still very proud of what we've done - the synthesizer promises to take it's humble place in history, at least we hope so :)
Thanks to everybody for supporting us and for kind words!
Sincerely yours
Alex Pleninger and Alexey Taber"
It's rare that we see a message like this, so thanks to Alex for sending this in. One thing to consider, is the number of units is limited to 100 so the high price will make the decision for many to skip one easier. Not to mention, there are still originals out there.

Hawkeye - SID Love (C64 8580 Stereo, Mutable Instruments Anushri)
Published on Nov 30, 2016 Maelstroem3
"Hola,
as recently requested by my YouTube friend KATOD_music (also a C64 SID nut :-)), here is a track that focuses again on the sound of the Commodore C64 SIDs. The synth in the upper left (red backlit knobs) houses eight 8580 SIDs in a DIY MB6582 synthesizer in four separate engines/channels, only a single stereo channel with two SIDs is used (lead stereo sweep starting at around 00:30).
Also featuring a Mutable Instruments Anushri (percussive arpeggio, right at the beginning), the Moog Little Phatty (dirty bassline, made with the LP through a DIY Polivoks filter and a Strymon Timeline delay) and an Elektron Machinedrum for percussion.
The session was recorded live, directly from the bare metal (Mackie 1604 mixer into Tascam WAV recorder) and was only slightly compressed in post-production and aligned to the video, no DAW necessary because of the fantastic MIDIbox MBSEQ V4 sequencer :-).
Hope you enjoyed it!
Thanks for watching and listening!

FORMANTA EMS-01 SOVIET ANALOG MONSTER SYNTH

"Formanta ems-01. This synth was developed in USSR in 80-s years on the same military radio plant in Kachkanar where well known Polivoks synth was produced.
Perhaps, Formanta ems-01 is most unusual sounding synth among the soviet made synthesizers. Its modulation possibilities are infinite, raw analog sound is absolutely unique, and it looks like peace of rock.
Let’s see overal architecture of the instrument. Instrument has two sections. The first section is analog mono-synth with two oscillators. It is the wild heart of the beast. Synth has 3-octave keyboard based on electromagnetic elements. It means that contacts of the keys will last forever. Every oscillator has triangle, saw and square waveforms. You can change square’s pulse width by knob or modulate it by LFO. Audio diapason of the every oscillator changes from 16’ to 2’. Mixer section has 5 knobs for control of amount audio from: 1 osc., 2 osc., external input, noise source, ring modulator. Then there is flexible LFO with controllable delay onboard. LFO has 6 waveforms: noise, sample-and-hold, two types of saw, square and sine. You can route LFO to modulate: every oscillator pitch, filter’s cutoff, VCA. Then you can switch LFO to trigger VCA and VCF envelopes, and you can modulate speed of LFO from keytracking. There is a ring modulator. You can switch input signals for ring modulator as 1osc. and 2osc., or as 1osc. and LFO. Then we have unique analog filter based on the same circuitry which used in Polivoks synth. You can control filter’s resonanse and cutoff by knobs, amount of modulation from LFO to cutoff, amount of modulation from dedicated AR envelope. Filter can be switched in low-pass mode or in band-pass mode. Filter’s envelope can be switched to positive or negative direction. Also we have VCA with dedicated ADSR envelope with autotrigger possibility. There is a portamento. You can adjust its time and switch off portamento from second oscillator and to get very special effect, this feature also borrowed from Polivoks synth. There are also: memory for last pushed key, slide knob which change overal tune in about 3 octaves, interval knob for detuning oscillators in about 1 octave, detune knob for detuning oscillators in about 1 ton range. Synth section has factory installed CV-in in Hz/Volt scale, but for its own gate trigger signals standard. Then there is second section of instrument. It is analog organ with 5 octave keyboard also on electromagnetic contacts. Organ has 6 preset sounds. For organ you can control: tune, amount of pitch modulation from dedicated triangle lfo, frequency of pitch modulation, delay of pitch modulation. Some organ’s preset sounds feed to rich analog 3-stage chorus effect. Then you can independently route synthesizer and organ to exellent analog stereo-phaser effect. Stereo-phaser has control of resonanse. On the back of the instrument there are outs for phones, audio mono sum, audio stereo outs, and input for pedal controller. Also there are CV-in, CV-out and external audio in."

POLIVOKS
"2 VCO with classic waveforms, noise oscillator and external source.
Very strong sounding Analog LP/BP filter with ADSR Envelope,
which can play in loop (retrig). You can process external sound through it,
such as guitar, vocal, drums or another synthesizer. Because of FILTER sound of POLIVOKS is so unique and strong/
Modulator section is a low frequency oscillator with multiple waveforms
and changable rate. LFO roots to amplifier, filter, VCO-1, VCO-2.
Polivoks can play like a classic monophonic synth or in 2-voice mode.
And also You can modulate VCO-1 with VCO-2 (ringmodulator).
No pitchbend & modulation wheel."

Voltage Controlled Deathillator
"Not sure exactly what to classify this as... Its a 16-minute recorded tweak session on a modular analog synth. Watch your speakers/headphones/ears near the end, it gets a little crazy.
For the synth-heads, modules featured prominently:
2x Livewire AFG
2x Plan B Model 13 Dual Timbral Gate (both gates used on both modules)
Plan B Model 28 Programmable Tap Clock (driving everything in here timing-wise)
Harvestman Malgorithm
Harvestman Polivoks VCF
Harvestman Stilton Adapter with Boss DD-7 with tap-tempo pedal on the DD-7 to sync it with the Model 28
Be careful with your speakers/headphones/ears near the end!

"I had my Neighbor Play Bass while I fiddle with the VCF. It was also FM Modulated by an Analog VCO"
"These are the inputs:
(1) CV
(1) FM bipolar CV
(2) Audio In (Ain)
These are the Outputs.
(1) FIlter out BP/LP (selected by swtich)
(1) LFO out
(1) LFO SQUARE OUT
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now for the hard Facts: The pre-amp section was intended for VCO analog synth Signals, It sounds very clean with these signals because these levels are usually Beefy and Big.
It can however amplify Line level by x100. But by cranking it up all the way you will hear slight distortion and a little Noise. This also applies to Guitars/bass. In other words this is not a crystal clear Pre-amp when cranked up x100 gain. This is how I wanted it to be, distorted and sour mainly for Analog Signals. I made some demos passing various signals through the filter so you can hear it in action."

Malekko Assmaster Euro Module

Assmaster1.mp3
"Germanium octave fuzz based off the Maestro Brassmaster fuzz pedal. The clip is a square (TipTop Z3000 and a Harvestman Polivoks filter with modulation on the freq of the filter and sens on the Assmaster) Fuzz circuits play nicely with filters with lots of res...the harvestman certainly fits the bill. i really didnt "push it" very much in this clip but you can get some INSANE tones and harmonics that way... they will ship first week in Feb"
Mr clacks Synthesizer extravaganza

via Mr Clack on this electro-music.com thread where you'll find pdfs of the screen prints for the panels and cases as well as some follow-up comments.
"Baby baby ive been busy,
Here is 3 synthesizers I Finally got round to putting together in the last 3 months. I put them in my fine art degree show so I got to get some good snaps of them.
left to right [top down]
Dual MFOS Soundlab and Keyboard
with S+H and Drum trigger
the mixers can take all 4 of the available oscillators

ASM-2 semi-modular
without patching the left side is 2 saws to state variable then vca
right 2 squares to LP moog then VCA
CLONE MODULAR
Built to act like a traditional subtractive modular. stupidly dense ( it needs to be due to lack of bedroom space ) trying to fit a sort of bank of well know filters thats , polivoks, steiner, arp, moog, korg ms20, korg resonator, ems, wasp etc - 6 YU vco's and some unusual modules like fritz chaos , tube vca, S+H/T+H, attenuverter, Noise cornicopia . with a little vca bank, it should be possible to get about 5 voices going at once. the mixers are not yet on it ( they go in the 1 u strips ) . 2xfritz AR 2xMFOS AR 1xYUADSR 1xMFOS ADSR - the mfos AR has repeat so it should double up as a sort of trapezoid LFO. It should be possible when its complete to do some FM experiments too"
