NAMM 2024 - Groove Synthesis - 3rd Wave Desktop

"At NAMM 2024, we met with Kurt from Groove Synthesis to explore the latest offering from the company, the Third Wave Desktop, featuring the new 1.7 operating system update. This update brings significant enhancements to the synth, including an improved virtual analog waveform oscillator and the incorporation of sequential Prophet VS wavetables. A major addition is MPE support and Kurt showed us the modulation routings for MPE parameters, allowing users to leverage Y-axis control and polyphonic aftertouch, bringing expressive capabilities to the forefront.

Kurt also demonstrated the more gnarly side of the 3rd Wave by disabling interpolation and navigating through individual parts of the wave for glitchy effects. The synth is not limited to virtual analog sounds; it offers FM modulation with 3-operator FM capabilities, providing users with a diverse sonic palette.

With the majority of my musical life being a DAW producer / composer, my shredding and live playing leaves a lot to be desired (understatement!),

I will always be the first to admit that my live play isn't great. And since making my sound design a commercial business, I have been set on taking at least an hour or two a day to practice scales etc purely to improve my videos/demos.

No matter your level of play, we all need to practice scales, and this patch is really made for that in mind. it is in C, but can me transposed via the sequence transpose to suit whatever minor blues scale you wish to learn or practise.

if you make to the end of the 4 minutes I applaud you :)

In this patch I decided to put together an ambient styled sequence, 1 patch all recorded directly from outputs 1&2 into my UAD interface, some slight limiting on the master and a touch of Reverb on entire mix.

The low end blows me away on this synth along with so many other features, the clarity is outstanding!

Definitely looking to be in the honeymoon period with this synth for a long time, I like to try all sorts when first programming on a new machine, from complex to relatively simple but lush sounds.

I am a firm believer that in the right context, less is more, select the best tone and filtering, add some nice dynamics, subtle mods and you can play for hours. I guess the piano, rhodes, acoustic guitar and so many instruments are just exactly that.

This to me has turned out to be one of those patches. no fancy frills, just warm , lush and very enjoyable to jam away with.

So it's December 31st and we are all nearing the close of 2023. what an amazing year it has been for new synths! and new synth companies throwing some serious competition into the market! we seem to be in a golden age of synthesis, and long may it last I say!

For the final video of 2023, I put together a split patch of bass and bells, BECAUSE here in Scotland we say "Bringing in the Bells" at new year time, just before we all link arms and sing "auld lang syne" at midnight which translated means 'times long past'...

I'd like to take this opportunity to say thanks for all who watched, subscribed, asked questions, commented and purchased my banks over the past year! it allows me to keep doing what I do, and I have so much more to create for you all to enjoy! - we have such a great community of synth enthusiasts! so please, if you haven't already.... It's easy to take advantage of the multi timbral aspects of the 3rd Wave, so in this Patch, I decided to see how complex it can sound only using one of the 4 layers, 3 Oscillators, all LFO's, Both Filters, Wave Envelopes, and all 4 other Envelopes, and WOW! it can get seriously complex, and seems to do so, without getting out of control or unruly! still playable and still very rich sounding!

it is so much more than just a new take on the PPG, The 3rd wave not only can replicate the vintage PPG sound, but can also sound seriously fat, warm, smooth, not brittle, and the frequency balance from low to highs is the best I have heard in any synth to date!

It is no surprise this synth is winning so many awards, it plays, sounds and programs like a dream! from delicate tones to fat growling basses, it can really do them all! I tip my hat to the @GrooveSynthesis team for this remarkable synth!

Not only that, but it is 4 synths in one box, each with dedicated sequencer, effects and audio outputs per synth.

This is one serious amount of synth for the buck, yes it sounds expensive, but the groove guys have gone all out with this and spared the user no expense! the luxury of 24 voices, each with Dave Rossum designed 2140 analog low-pass filters per voice, SEM Styled Modelled Filter that runs in series to further sculpt your sound pallets."

I'm still in the learning phase of the 3rd Wave, and have to admit this thing is huge, Yes the PPG Waves are great, but coupled with the VA side of things it is remarkable, the Dave Rossum designed 2140 analog low-pass filter is simply stunning and I believe is the same filter used in the P5/10 Rev4.

this Patch is called - 'SM Uplift Seq'

All sounds in this are one multi patch, each of the 4 parts sequenced separately,
Part 1 - Main Synth Pluck,
Part 2 - Rythmic Digi Pluck
Part 3 - Res Pad
Part 4 - Kick

Anyway, thought I'd do my usual, and fire out some patch examples as I go :)

"I've seen a lot of demos of the ROLI Seaboard Rise 2 but most are using it with its own software (which is excellent btw I demo it in here). I've been keen to get one to play with, particularly as I've got a fair few synths that are MPE compatible, and haven't spent enough time exploring this side of them.

In this I take a look at using it with the Synclavier Regen, Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave and the Sequential OB6.

It's super easy to set up and adds sooooo much more potential for expression. I now understand why people want MPE keyboards on everything!... get one of these and you have :)"
