"It was a kit from Maplin, probably in the early 90's if i recall correctly. Its got a grungy digital delay and a 4 stage high speed signal gating circuit, with a knob to set the gating speed. Gate the signal fast enough and you get cross modulation style effects."

It is still working but not fully. It has not been fully tested for some time.

Maplin ETI 4600 Synth

Some info via the seller: "Ok...., as far as i can tell its a finished project all parts there on the circuit boards with just a few wires to connect, keyboard and power supply socket which i have.
I had an external power supply made up by a professional who knows his synths, (ex BBC tech)
he has been inside these beasts before.
He thinks the power supply may have been taken out and an external one used as inside is a reverb tank that could have been picking up interference from the original, Makes sense.
The keyboard itself looks as if its never been played as its in excellent condition and is still in need of fixing down, about 4 screws i think but all the wood inside it fixes to is fitted.
This will definitely need servicing and some of the pots/controls are a bit stiff so some spray could well sort them out, also as you can probably tell if you know these synths is that its missing all its coloured caps, i personally think it looks far better like this and not like a toy but again these can be easily sourced if you wanted it totally original.
It has 6 of the original pins for the matrix board and i will supply info as to where to get more if you want them, i have collected all i could from the web about this synth which includes the original building and setting instructions plus other stuff."

"used but excellent condition Maplin 3800 analogue synthesizer, these are now incredibly rare. This machine has just come out of service with a full bill of health after being fully calibrated and checked over by one of the best synth engineers in the UK. Physical condition is excellent aside from a few marks from use. As pictured some of the knob caps are missing, they will be replaced by the time the auction ends with a similar alternative, please not the colour may differ slightly from the originals, its pretty cheap to replace them all if you want a more universal finish. This machine wipes the floor sonically with similar sized machines from Roland/Moog/ARP partly due to the Transient Generator which are normally only found on modular synths The 3800 has some useful unique features including an external input which allows you to put other instruments through the synth and a multi-stage Transient Generator which is far more flexible than a standard ADSR type Envelope generator fitted on most other analogue synths. "This is an incredbily rare dual analog drum synth made in Japan.
It compares to the Coron and JHS analog drum synths sometimes seen in the UK, to the early Synare products, and to the original Simmons analog drums.
You'll probably never see another one of these on sale, so now's your only chance to own one.
Each of the two independent drum sounds has sensitivity, octave, tuning, up or down sweep depth and output level controls.
Channel 1 can be switched from Cymbal (white noise) to square or sine wave outputs, and Channel 2 from Snare to square or sine wave output.
The rear panel has quarter inch jack trigger inputs and the casing lid has built-in rubber drum pads containing piezo triggers. Once you've set the drum sounds you can close the lid and play without needing to see the controls if you prefer, and there's a stand mounting slot underneath. Alternatively you can trigger the synths from other pads such as Simmons pads, from drum triggers added to acoustic drums, or from the trigger outputs of drum machines like the Roland TR808, or from analog sequencers.
There are rear panel connections for an optional foot switch and a foot pedal (not included), which presumably mute and pitch bend the synth sounds.
This unit was originally part of the "El Monstruo" analog/digital modular synthesizer system playing huge percussive patterns triggered from the various sequencers within the system. Klaus Schulze did something similar with dual analog drum synths during his 1970's concerts, and the true analog sound from these modules can be absolutely window-breaking. Be careful with it, because there is no limit to how low these analog sounds can go...almost subsonic bass booms can be created with ease.
This unit is in very good condition and fully working.
You'll receive the dual drum synth and matching lid/pad unit.
You'll need a 12V DC power supply with a standard fitting (9V is probably OK too, though the label underneath specifies 15V), and quarter inch jack trigger cables are not included (short ones from Maplin would be good to run from the lid/pad unit, longer ones if you want to interface to other instruments).
The lower parts of the hinges and front clasp are not present. You can replace these for a few pennies from any hardware store..."

"Incredibly rare vintage 60s Maestro Woodwind analogue effects box complete with clarinet pickup and original carry case! I think it's the rarest "W1" model. Not sure where to start with this...
It's primarily designed for playing Clarinet or Saxophone through, then passing it into an amp but can also be used as a guitar effect, synth effect or you can put just about anything through it via the inputs.
You can hear this all over the woodwind on a lot of the Frank Zappa records - infact, it's on the inside sleeve of Hot Rats. Used by Kraftwerk also. It sounds a lot like loads of effects on early Roxy Music/ Brian Eno stuff...
In theory it has settings like "Cello" and "Horn" which transform the woodwind sound via pitch shift/ tracking etc.
BUT, you can also coax various 60s Maestro fuzz sounds out of it (they made very expensive classics like the Brassmaster etc.) by putting whatever you want through it.
The clarinet socket was switched to a 1/4" socket by the previous owner, which makes it easier for feeding signals through. There's a very slight dent where they did it - you can see in the picture. Output is on two 1/4" jacks. This allows you to get really good stereo effects. It also has a tremolo and EQ! You can apply effects to each output.
If you want to run a guitar or signal from a mixing desk/ Pro Tools through the unit then you should use a preamp or signal booster before it so it can track the notes OK. Also, best to run it into a DI box or instrument inputs on your soundcard/ desk.
If you want to use the Maestro with a clarinet then use the pickup/ barrel in place of the usual one on your clarinet. Has fitted every single clarinet I've used it with (Buffet, Bundy etc.)
All in all a very eccentric and unique box, rare as hen's teeth. I was told this one was made in the 60s which would make sense. It's in really good condition and looks amazing. Probably a real collectors piece. Very useful and fun for studio sessions/ mixing.

"Incredibly rare vintage 60s Maestro Woodwind analogue effects box complete with clarinet pickup and original carry case! I think it's the rarest "W1" model. Not sure where to start with this...It's primarily designed for playing Clarinet or Saxophone through, then passing it into an amp but can also be used as a guitar effect, synth effect or you can put just about anything through it via the inputs.
You can hear this all over the woodwind on a lot of the Frank Zappa records - infact, it's on the inside sleeve of Hot Rats. Used by Kraftwerk also. It sounds a lot like loads of effects on early Roxy Music/ Brian Eno stuff...
In theory it has settings like "Cello" and "Horn" which transform the woodwind sound via pitch shift/ tracking etc.
BUT, you can also coax various 60s Maestro fuzz sounds out of it (they made very expensive classics like the Brassmaster etc.) by putting whatever you want through it.
The clarinet socket was switched to a 1/4" socket by the previous owner, which makes it easier for feeding signals through. There's a very slight dent where they did it - you can see in the picture. Output is on two 1/4" jacks. This allows you to get really good stereo effects. It also has a tremolo and EQ! You can apply effects to each output.
If you want to run a guitar or signal from a mixing desk/ Pro Tools through the unit then you should use a preamp or signal booster before it so it can track the notes OK. Also, best to run it into a DI box or instrument inputs on your soundcard/ desk.
If you want to use the Maestro with a clarinet then use the pickup/ barrel in place of the usual one on your clarinet. Has fitted every single clarinet I've used it with (Buffet, Bundy etc.)All in all a very eccentric and unique box, rare as hen's teeth. I was told this one was made in the 60s which would make sense. It's in really good condition and looks amazing. Probably a real collectors piece. Very useful and fun for studio sessions/ mixing.
