PPG PRK ROM Based Model Processor Keyboard

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a very rare PPG PRK. It has not been used for many years and I have no way of testing if it is still working so you should assume it is not.

It is the ROM based model with classic samples from the Waveterm Library stored in ROM for fast loading and without the need for Waveterm.

'The PPG PRK was created for a number of reasons; firstly many PPG owners wanted to have velocity sensitivity when using their PPG synths - the PPG PRK offers this.
Also the 'closer-to-piano-feeling' was something that musicians wanted at this time - the PPG PRK offers this as well.

The PPG PRK also offered optional voice boards to be inserted into the unit.
This does not mean that the PPG PRK itself can create any sounds - but by inserting the optional sound cards you could send the information on these to the PPG Wave 2.2, PPG Wave 2.3 or PPG EVU.'

PPG Wave 3.V Beta Testing Begins

via Waldorf:

"The new Waldorf PPG Wave 3.V is now in beta test stage.

Waldorf PPG Wave 3
Busy testers will put the plug-in through its paces. We are very proud that one of our testers is mastermind Wolfgang Palm himself who invented the PPG Synthesizers in the 1970s.

Here are some secret facts: Besides the well-known features of the PPG Wave 2.V our new plug-in offers sample playback based on the classic PPG Waveterm technology. We have added some nice stuff like an opulent effects section, filter drive as well as an extensive sound browser.

Not enough? Well, what would you say if we added the complete Waveterm B sample library and more than 130 wavetables (a lot of new stuff created by Wolfgang Palm)."

Also, the Waldorf Edition software package currently featuring the PPG Wave 2.V, Waldorf Attack drum synth, and D-Pole filter is available for purchase online. Note it is also available at Novamusik here.

"Three masterpieces in one edition:

* Waldorf Attack is a very powerful and versatile drum synthesizer, beloved due to it's rich palette of sounds an intuitive user interface.
* PPG Wave 2.V is the authentic reproduction of the legendary PPG Wave 2.3. that dominated many productions of the 80s.
* D-Pole is the prestigious Waldorf Filter with resonance up to self-oscillaton and beyond.

Everything runs properly on Mac and PC, also on Intel based Mac and as AudioUnit.
This offer is a download item. The boxed version can be purchased from your local dealer.
Here some sound examples:

Index of /waveterm/LJLab2006

Title link takes you to a slew of synth shots from Andrew Dean, including some rare items (Update: the site is gone, title link now points to Waveterm's flickr set for the LAB). The gear list is pretty long so hop over to see based on the titles. You'll find a ton of PPG including the Waveterm and EVU (Expansion Voice Unit - the sequencer looking thing in the shot below), various Simmons drum machines, the Yamaha CS30L (below), and more. Note the CS30L is flat unlike the CS30 which had an angled control panel.
Update: More on the PPG Waveterm and PPG in general, including samples on the PPG Webpages. Tip via Mr. Array in the comments.

The song was on an old ORWO music cassette that I had recorded at RIAS Berlin sometime in the mid-80s. The ending was stalled because the moderator had babbled into the recording again. As so often. 😃 I loved the song because I liked those metallic PPG synthesizer sounds. Without even knowing at the time that it was a PPG or how look a PPG synthesizer. 😉 It didn't matter either, because that was all unattainable at the time anyway.

Matia Bazar - Ti Sento (1985)

I used here the PPG wave 2.2 synthesizer for the most sounds. Layered with the E-MU Emulator II (strings, choir layer, percussion and some fx sounds)

The PPG Wave Synthesizer from the year 1982 is one of the most fascinatic synths ever. PPG System (PRKFD, WTB + Wave 2.3)

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this VEMIA auction

"I am unfortunately forced to sell my crown jewel. My near mint PPG System from 1987. I am second owner and it shows. There is only minor tear and wear and the system is 100% working and I would judge the cosmetic condition to 98% or so. The PPG System consists of the PPG Waveterm B, the PPG PRK-FD and the fantastic PPG Wave 2.3 - all in near mint/mint condition. Comes in original boxes, with factory library on 30+ floppies, 2 VERY BIG original shipping labels stickers, the original PPG Demo Tape, all cables, and the original PPG stand. System has been serviced by the PPG Guru Stefan Hübner in Hamburg. Can potentially be shipped but will most definitely prefer a pick up. This System is NOT light and due to weight, age and working condition I will not recommend it to be shipped - but it is possible."

PPG Wave 2.2, Wave 2.3 and EVU: System V8.3

"This new and progressive operating system improves your PPG!

V8.3 is our consistent development of our successful V8.0. Like V8.0 the new V8.3 system offers comprehensive SysEx support which allows saving your own sounds via MIDI to an external computer device. Formerly this was only possible with an expensive Waveterm computer device. Via MIDI SysEx datagrams the PPG synthesizer will communicate with an external MIDI library, like the Emagic SoundDiver.

Additionally our current V8.3 system convinces with many new and helpful functions, removes annoying problems of the old PPG system V6.0 and offers an improved MIDI timing.

Performance features of V8.3 - the evolution from V6.0 / V8.0
V8.3 offers following new features which are a clear improvement in comparison to previous old systems:

*Comfortable handling of the extensive V8.0 SysEx functions directly accessable form the PPG panel
*Accelerated MIDI timing due of improved MIDI code
*ANALOG-panel shows the value of the modulation wheel; essential for sound programming experts
*Extended V8.0 SysEx implementation for storing sounds on an external computer device
*PPG bus emulation over the MIDI interface; for PPG extremists and future applications
*During the boot process the display shows the version and serial number
*Extended user´s manual with new "quick start guide"

Additionally in V8.3 we improved the program code of the old official PPG release V6.0 and removed engraving software bugs:

*Arpeggiator bug of Wave 2.3 solved
*Initialisation problem of the Upper Wavetable solved
*Correction of the defective waveforms in Wavetable 13
*Several minor bug fixes (Sequencer quantization, arpeggiator mode, etc.)

Scope of supply
This kit consists of an easy understandable user-manual (english or german version) and 4 new chips. The original EPROMs in your Wave or EVU will be replaced by the new ones."

PPG Waveterm

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

via the seller: "This is a Waveterm A in the Waveterm B enclosure.

This is as per the factory upgrade to the 5 1/4 disc drives.

Serial number WT0200

Waveterm come with Data Cable.

Supplied with small Library from 1984 (the year not the film)

Unit is 110V and 220V selectable.

So far most of the systems are working however there seems to be a problem with the sample play back. We suspect that the operating systems disc may be corrupted. At present the Waveterm is being tested by one of the top UK Synth techs and I will provide more info as it comes in.

Additional Info
After much experimentation it appears that all systems work with the exception of sample play back. Fourier and Wave Tables operate correctly and can be seen and heard working. External Sampling comes in, you can see the waveform but playback is corrupted. Disc drives work correctly. Communications works correctly. The Waveterm has been tried with two different 2.2's and intern both 2.2's have been tried with two different Waveterms all with the same outcome weird sample playback. The only common item is the system software which we only have one copy of!!

Additional Info
I have been advised that a new systems disc is on its way from a very cool guy. I will contact Mr. Repair Monday and find out any more info. I have also been advised that I had over priced the unit so a new BIN price is now available. Having spoken to Mr. Repair we may have found the problem to be a faulty lead. We are in the process of getting a new lead so we can give it a go. OOOhhh i'm so excited!!"

The PPG Wave could be connected to multiple peripheral PPG components simultaneously, such as a 'smart' keyboard controller (PRK), 8-voice expansion units (EVU), and a sampling/editing/sequencing wave computer (Waveterm). Collectively, this setup was referred to as the "PPG Wave System", which was intended to compete with the Fairlight CMI..."

"Showing the first video to be featured on thePPGs.com.

The PPG Wave 2.3 is one of the most fantastic synthesizers ever made - period.
Its sound is out of this world and to me there is no synth more delicate and at the same time raw and unique.

The video features the PPG Wave 2.3 and at the end of the video you'll hear my old and trustworthy Hammond AutoVari-64 as well as I try - and fail - to play in time with it.
The audio from the PPG Wave 2.3 and Hammond AutoVari-64 has been recorded to disk and inserted in the video for the best possible audio.

Have fun listening to the wavetable fun !!

Wolfgang Palm Creates PPG Waveterm Demo Disk

via wolfgangpalm.com where you'll find an audio demo.

"Building up on my simulations of the Waveterm system, I assembled a demo disk with new wavetables and resonators. These were generated by analysis software, which I developed over the years. I could only dream of those tools in the old days! (1979) Today I can calculate wavetables in the optimal numerical range (limited by the 0-63 range) or can generate reasonable resonators. I did not enter the data by hand, but “injected” it directly into the waveterm by the simulator, and then saved it to the simulated disk. There is one version for the Waveterm-B and also one for the Waveterm-A.
Lars Johansson makes real floppy disks from the images I gave him. Infos can be obtained from him."
