EMS Synthi E

Title link takes you to shots pulled via this auction, including one of the inside.

Details:
The EMS Synthi E was a basic synthesizer designed for educational use from 1975 by the EMS boys in Cornwall. I believe that there were only around 200 of these things made and they are pretty rare now! This one is number 147! It's in great condition hardly a mark on it however, it might need a bit of cleaner on some of the faders as there is a slight scratchy sound when moving some of them. The mixer level 2 fader may also need reseating as it seems a tiny bit wobbly!. There are 11 of the original patch cables to go with this thing too including 2 Y cable splitters. The thing sounds WEIRD but ultra cool. Only needs 12 big 1.5V Eveready batteries and your away! If you want to learn a bit more type "Synthi E" into google and check out some of the sites. WILL SHIP WORLDWIDE

MAIN FEATURES INCLUDE:
* Input Amplifier with low (Microphone) and high (line) level inputs.
* Envelope Follower providing a voltage proportional to the amplitude of the input.
* Oscillator 1 with true exponential voltage control of frequency and three simultaneous output waveforms (sine, triangle and voltage controlled pulse)
* Oscillator 2 for slow control voltages such as glissando or vibrato.
* Filter/Oscillator 3 with v.c. low, high and band pass filter or pure sine wave.
* Modulator for envelope shaping or ring modulation. Noise Generator.
* Trapezoid Generator for multiple simultaneous trapezoid waveforms. These may be used for envelope shaping (trigger mode) or for low frequency waveforms (free run mode).
* Manual-Slide tape Controllers (2) for obtaining control voltages. One slide-tape is stepped and may be used as a keyboard and the other for variable control. One provides a trigger pulse. Both may be temporarily marked or written on.
* Inverter to invert control voltages or signals.
* Monitor Amplifier and Loudspeaker with two input mixer faders

The Synthi Group Vol.1 Now Available

You can find it and the track list on Clinical Archives

Synopsis:
Formed in 1969, Electronic Music Studios (EMS) quickly became innovators for the recording, production and advancement of electronic music. The ideas and designs that bubbled forth out of the ingenuitive minds of Peter Zinovieff, Tristram Cary, David Cockerell and others, led to the creation of some of the most wildly original musical / sound design equipment ever conceived. The VCS3, Synthi A + AKS, Synthi 100, Synthi E, Synthi Logik and the Soundbeam are among these,
almost unworldly, devices.

It is often said EMS gear has attained cult status, reaching a fervor of near worship among its users. The Synthi Group is an example and collection of such users. United through the Synthi blog and forum (www.thesynthi.de) and located throughout the world, the group's members have come together for a planned series of compilation volume releases where the individuality and approach of each member towards their EMS instrument is showcased and broadcasted for all to experience. The listener will hear wildly different examples of styles and sounds that this original, and oft times, vintage equipment can create.

EMS were true pioneers from the very beginning, always looking beyond the culture and times they were surrounded and seemingly trapped in. Still around today, thanks to Robin Wood and Ludwig Rehberg, they are one of the few companies involved with electronic instrument production that have had a continued run since their inception. The Synthi Group have honed the original pioneering spirit and DIY ethic of EMS with their Volume series, a collection of sounds encompassing beautiful dreamscapes, synaesthetic visions, dark ambience, aural abstractions, sonic absurdities, pulsating analog, glitch, ring modulators, and envelope shapers generating trapezoidal geometry. Beginning with Volume 1, the Synthi Group compilations aim to ensure the story of EMS continues well into the future of electronic music production.

EMS Synthis

Thought it might be fun to put up a post on the four most popular EMS Synthis. And yes you can still get a Synthi from EMS, a Synthi A or a Synthi VCS3 to be exact. Title link takes you to the history of all EMS synths. Well worth checking out if you haven't in a while, or even if you have. You can back track to the home page from there if you want to buy one. : ) This stuff never gets old for me.

New EMS Synthi Faceplate

Image of the new EMS Synthi faceplate sent my way via ross. Click image for full size shot.

Via AH:

"I had talked to Robin Wood regarding production of the new Synthis. Apparently they will have 99% exact parts as the originals, the only being that the original reverb tank on the originals VCS3 and Synthi A has lapsed, and there is a comparable replacement. All the rest of the parts and circuits should be built to exact specifications as the original units produced from 1972 onwards. Although I had originally considered trading my Synton Fenix due to EMS lust, I think I am better off attempting to acquire one of Robin's new handmade units. I won't be able to easily replace the functionality of the feature set of my Synton Fenix, and it is far more rare of an instrument. My only apprehension is that Robin has stated that he would build units for the last 6 years, and it has been quite some time since they were produced. I think he is honest, and he has been absolutely helpful in my recent E-mail inquiries into his Synthis, however I am weary of waiting for many years in anticipation for a Synthi A, with the possibility that they may never be produced. Apparently he only has 40 Synthi briefcases left, so Synthi As will no longer be produced after this next batch. Furthermore, the company that produces the matrixboards for the Synthis is stopping production, so there is a new renewed urgency to finish production on these units, as well as to backstock this particular part for future repairs. Anyone on the list have a recent custom made Synthi from 1990-2001? It would be interesting to hear if these units differ from the originals, and how well they conformed to original specifications."

Update via Ross:
"Synthi differences

heard from Robin that there are more differences

1. no more Prestopatch ( see faceplate photo)
2. Pastel coloured knobs
3. no more sequencer
4. Joystick is not the same.

I wanted to buy an old silver face plate for my Synthi AKS as the china
graph is coming off, and was informed that the silver faceplate is no
longer being made.

I am desperate for anyone who has copied exactly the original
prestopatch Synthi AKS faceplate in any format pdf, etc or what ever
format as I want to get a new faceplate made up."

"A brand-new sealed example of the most beautiful book ever produced about synthesisers.

Hardback, top quality paper and reproduction, full colour printing on most pages, great photos by Dieter Stork, and authoritative, well-researched text by Matthias Becker.
In German, but still a huge amount of info and synth porn for a non-German-speaker.

EMS Synthi E Rare Vintage Analog Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"For sale is a very rare EMS Synthi E synthesizer. This one is fully functional, recently serviced & in excellent cosmetic shape. Everything is working as it should, a very cool instrument. Estimated less than a 100 of these left in existence, from the same makers as the classic Synthi A & VCS3. Patch leads & power supply included. The power supply operates at 240v but a high quality step up/step down transformer will be included for operation in all countries. This is a great chance to own a collector's piece. Don't miss out!"
