Sequential Take 5 Synth Filter Demo - LPF Technical Demo - SSI2140

video upload by Creative Spiral

"This is not really meant to be a musical demo, but rather a technical demo of the 4-Pole low pass filter on the new Sequential Take 5 synth. I show filter sweeps with various Osc/Noise setups, and many different resonant and drive settings. In addition, there's some examples with the Vintage Knob.

This shows off the core sound of the Take 5... just oscillators directly into the filter, without any sound design or effects. It's got a lot of Prophet mojo, as it uses the same filter as the New Prophet 5 Rev4 for 1/2 mode. (the SSI2140)

Sequential Names Audio/MI Veteran David Gibbons as CEO

via Sequential

Company Founder Dave Smith to Continue Leading Product Development

San Francisco, CA — June 24, 2021 — Sequential LLC today announced that it has chosen respected audio and music industry veteran David Gibbons to take on the role of CEO and spearhead its business operations. Dave Smith, famed instrument designer and founder of the respected American synthesizer manufacturer, will continue to drive the company’s product vision, development, and engineering efforts.

Gibbons has a distinguished history in the industry and was responsible for Avid/Digidesign’s entry and unprecedented success in the live sound console arena. He started the VENUE live digital mixing console product line and grew it to over $35M in annual revenues. He went on to lead the audio portfolio strategy for the company, and helped it grow to over $300M through a host of powerful and well-integrated music, post, and live sound products. Outside the audio industry, Gibbons has held marketing and product leadership roles at several notable tech companies including streaming media leader Ustream (acquired by IBM), and Salesforce, where he led marketing for their analytics solution.

Sequential’s Dave Smith commented: “I am personally excited to bring David in to run Sequential. Not only is he bringing all of his experience building brands and opening markets, but also his ability to drive innovation while managing the business and operational aspects of a company. My goal has always been to focus my energy on product design and engineering, and now I have David to take us into the future and further develop the Sequential brand and legacy.”

Tim Carroll, CEO of Focusrite Group, added: “I’m thrilled to be working with David again. During our time at Digidesign and Avid, David’s leadership and passion for the industry led to some amazing achievements. Having him at the helm of Sequential’s business operations with Dave Smith leading the charge on product innovation is an unbeatable combination. It’s going to result in even more killer products from the Sequential team.”

Taking the reins as CEO, David Gibbons had this to say: “I’m so excited to join Dave Smith and Sequential. Working with a legend like Dave is on every musician’s wish list. And I’ve always enjoyed working with Tim Carroll. When Tim called to offer me this opportunity, I didn’t think twice: Sequential products have inspired keyboardists for years. And the team they’ve cultivated keeps delivering incredible instrument after instrument. Now, with Tim and the Focusrite Group behind us, there’s so much more we can accomplish. After 40-plus years, Sequential is just getting started!”

Sequential has been a leading force in the resurgent popularity of analog synthesizers over the last decade. Its instruments, which include the Prophet® 5 Rev4 polyphonic synth, Pro 3® hybrid monosynth, and Prophet X Samples + Synthesis keyboard, are known for their versatility, ease of use, and excellence of sound. Techno on a Sequential Prophet 5 REV4? | CONFORCE

video by Conforce

"Here's a video to give you a sound impression of the Prophet 5 rev 4 desktop synthesizer There are 6 short jams that should give you a good idea about the overall possibilities.
#prophet5 #sequential #prophet6 #electro #synthesizer #techno

About: Sequential made a desktop version of their beloved classic Prophet 5 and it's an amazing compact analog workhorse polyphonic synthesizer that comes as close to the original as possible. It has an added vintage mode allowing you to determine a certain amount of oscillator, envelope and filter drift for a more organic sound. Besides that there are two filter options you can choose from, the rev1/2 and the rev3 filter, check the video to listen to some of the nuance differences. I struggled with the intention to get the P6 over the P5.. I think it's with a reason that they released the 5 again and priced it higher, the features are less but then again... I don't need an internal sequencer and effects, I just wanted the solid pure tone of the classic Prophet. I'm impressed by it and will be exploring it in the coming weeks. The envelopes and filter are great however they don't beat the incredible speed of my Korg Mono/Poly.."

Sequential Joins The Focusrite Group — A Message From Dave Smith

video by Sequential

"It’s with great excitement that I announce that Sequential is joining the Focusrite Group of music and audio brands.

We're now part of a family made up of some of the best and brightest companies in the music instruments and pro audio industries: Focusrite, Focusrite Pro, Martin Audio, Optimal Audio, ADAM Audio, Novation and Ampify Music. We’re in good company!

But don't worry — we’re not going anywhere. It’s business as usual for us and we'll be a separate entity from the other brands in the group. I’ll continue to lead our engineering and product development and work with the Sequential design team into the future. If anything, I'll have more time to make amazing synths!

- Dave Smith"

And the official press release:

Focusrite PLC Acquires Sequential® in Landmark Industry Development

Legendary Synth Brand Founded by Dave Smith Joins Focusrite Group

San Francisco, CA and High Wycombe, UK — April 27th 2021 — In a joint statement, Focusrite Group and Sequential LLC today announced that Focusrite plc, a leading global creator of music and audio hardware and software products, has acquired Sequential LLC, the respected American synthesizer manufacturer led by legendary electronic instrument designer and Grammy® winner Dave Smith.

Both companies stand to benefit from the synergy created by the acquisition. The Focusrite Group will add the venerable Sequential line of instruments to its already-impressive portfolio of products, which includes the acclaimed Focusrite, Focusrite Pro, Martin Audio, Optimal Audio, ADAM Audio, Novation, and Ampify brands. Sequential will benefit from greater resources to expand its global markets and future R&D efforts.

Sequential’s Dave Smith said, “With Focusrite, we’ve found an ideal home and a perfect cultural and technological fit. Phil Dudderidge and his team have a long history of quality, vision, and focus on what musicians and audio professionals really want. We’re excited to join such an industry powerhouse and contribute to our mutual success. I expect great things.”

They are a mainstay of performing and recording artists and can be seen and heard on countless stages and recordings.

Focusrite Founder Phil Dudderidge commented: “We’re excited and pleased to add Sequential’s instruments and pedigree to Focusrite Group’s portfolio of world-class audio and music production tools. Dave Smith’s history as an innovator speaks for itself. From his creation of the world’s first fully programmable polysynth, the Prophet 5, to his co-invention of MIDI, Dave has literally changed the world of music several times. We’re looking forward to continuing his history of innovation and expanding the global market for Sequential’s instruments.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Sequential has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Focusrite plc. Sequential’s day-to-day operations and product development remain unchanged and will continue to be guided by Dave Smith and his team.

Tim Carroll, CEO of Focusrite Group, remarked, “Sequential is a premium analogue synth brand with a big stake in music creation. The products are exceptional and the company is run extremely well, and the passion of the people at Sequential aligns perfectly with our Focusrite Group ethos. It’s tremendously exciting to be able to bring Sequential into the Focusrite family, further the incredible journey that Dave Smith started, and keep growing together.”

via Sequential

And via Novation:

Legendary synth brand Sequential joins the family

Sequential and Novation will grow together under the same parent company.

We’re over the moon to announce that our parent company, Focusrite plc, has acquired Sequential, the synth brand founded and led by legendary synth designer and Grammy winner, Dave Smith.

If you’re new to the name Sequential, you’ll definitely have heard the synths: Dave Smith is the pioneer that designed the world’s first fully programmable polysynth, the classic Prophet® 5, and he co-invented MIDI, which transformed electronic production and changed musical history. Today, countless artists still count on Sequential instruments to bring life and an undeniably rich and organic feeling to their musical creations, spanning every genre.

Before your mind goes wild conceiving the ultimate Novation x Sequential product mashup, it’s safe to say that Sequential and Novation will continue to operate independently, as separate entities under the Focusrite Group umbrella. Dave Smith will remain at the helm of Sequential, leading engineering, product development and mentorship of Sequential’s new breed of designers.

So, it’s business as usual, and we’re extremely excited to grow together, inspire each other, and together fuel the future of forward-thinking music!

Sequential Introduces New Prophet-5 and Prophet-10 Desktop Modules

Title says it all. Press release follows:

Sequential Announces Prophet®-5 and Prophet®-10 Desktop Modules

San Francisco, CA—Jan 12, 2021—Fast on the heels of the reintroduction of its legendary Prophet-5 synthesizer, Sequential today announced that it has created a desktop version of the acclaimed instrument. As with the keyboard version, the desktop model will be available in both five- and ten-voice configurations, dubbed the Prophet-5 desktop module and Prophet-10 desktop module, respectively. They feature the same authentic vintage sound and front-panel controls as the Prophet-5 and Prophet-10 keyboards, but in a smaller form factor designed for portability and space-conscious studios.

“Our introduction of the Prophet-5 and Prophet-10 Rev 4 keyboards has been hugely successful. At the same time, a lot of people have been asking us for an easy way to fit them into a smaller studio space or into a touring rig,” commented Sequential founder and original Prophet-5 designer Dave Smith. “It was an easy decision to create a desktop module to fill that need. The great thing is, we managed to fit the same big, ballsy sound of the full Prophet-5 into a desktop model. It sounds every bit as awesome.”

Like the original, the new Prophet-5 and Prophet-10 modules feature two multi-waveform analog oscillators, analog resonant low-pass filters and amplifiers, and a filter and amplifier envelope per voice. Modulation is provided by a multi-waveshape LFO and Poly Mod, a ground-breaking modulation scheme for its time that allowed the filter envelope and oscillator B to be routed to a variety of destinations including filter cutoff frequency, oscillator A frequency, and oscillator A pulse width.

And just like the new Prophet-5/10 Rev 4 keyboards, the modules feature genuine Curtis VCOs and filters as used in the Prophet-5 Rev 3, as well as the Dave Rossum-designed SSI 2140 filter — the modern counterpart of the original SSM 2040 Rossum designed in the Prophet-5 Rev 1 and Rev 2. A Rev switch on the front panel allows users to switch between the two as desired.

Also present is the new Vintage knob, which loosens up the oscillators, filters, and envelopes from voice to voice as they typically are in vintage Prophet-5s. Users can dial in progressively more vintage character from a very stable “4,” as in Prophet-5 Rev4, all the way to “1,” as in Prophet-5 Rev1, which was the most temperamental of all Prophet-5s. The original factory sound set is included as well.

Other modern enhancements include velocity sensitivity and aftertouch to increase expressiveness, as well as MIDI and USB connectivity. Control voltage and gate ins/outs are also present for connecting modular synths and other gear. The new modules are housed in a premium-quality, steel case with hand-oiled sustainable black walnut heartwood trim.

Both modules will be available in February. The Prophet-5 desktop module has a US MAP of $2,499.
The Prophet-10 desktop module has a US MAP of $3,299.

The company’s products are used by an ever-growing roster of well-known musicians and are available from music retailers worldwide. Instruments include the new Prophet-5 and Prophet-10 Rev 4, the Pro 3 and Pro 3 SE, and the Prophet X, Prophet-6, OB-6, and Prophet Rev2 synthesizers. New Sequential OB-6 & Prophet-6 BETA OS Updates Add MPE Supoort & Vintage Mode Operation

It looks like the OB-6 and Prophet-6 will be getting MPE support and the Prophet-5's adjustable vintage knob functionality.

via the OB-6 Sequential forum:

Main OS 1.6.4
Feature: MPE support
Feature: Slop now supports normal slop or Vintage operation

This OS is compatible with both the keyboard and desktop module; it will display as "1.6.4" after the update.

And via the Prophet-6 Sequential forum:

Main OS 1.6.3
Feature: MPE support
Feature: Slop selectable between normal slop and Vintage operation

This OS is compatible with both the keyboard and desktop module; it will display as "1.6.3" after the update.

If you recall, the Prophet-5 introduced a new Vintage Knob described as follows:

"Vintage Sound, Vintage Knob
In addition to sourcing genuine Prophet-5 hardware components, we did extensive research into exactly what made the original sound the way it did — warm, organic, and alive. We found that much of this desirable character was due to slight fluctuations and differences in the response times and frequencies of the individual VCOs, filters, envelopes, and amplifiers from voice to voice.

To give the same mojo to the new Prophet-5, we created the Vintage knob. Use it to dial in as much old-school randomness as you’d like. Go from a very stable '4' — as in Prophet-5 Rev4, which is how we refer to the new version in house — all the way to “1,” as in Prophet-5 Rev1, the rarest and most temperamental of all Prophet-5s."

And the OB-6's Detune knob offered the following:

"The oscillators on the OB-6 are extremely stable. To emulate the random pitch drift and oscillator instability of vintage instruments, use the DETUNE parameter (next to the UNISON button) to dial in as little or as much drift as you like."

The BETA OSes add a new "Vintage operation".

Update: I have confirmation from Sequential that this is indeed the same as the vintage knob functionality introduced in the new Prophet-5 and Prophet-10.
