Synton Fenix

via this auction
"incredibly rare Synton Fenix modular synthesizer. I believe that 75 of these were made, prized by their owners and rarely found for sale. Designed by the (in)famous Synton team in Holland, this is easily one of the most flexible and comprehensive modular synthesizers ever designed. They kept this instrument interesting throughout - each oscillator, LFO, envelope and so forth are very different. The noise source is incredibly flexible, the ring modular isn't vanilla at all and there are plenty of thoughtful little tricks throughout which surface as you spend time with the machine.

The Encore Expressionist is, in my opinion, the nicest MIDI to CV converter around. It provides eight CV outputs and eight trigger/gate outputs. These outputs can be used for notes, bound to MIDI CCs, grouped up for polyphony, assigned to additional LFOs which the Expressionist provides via software, with a very, very easy to understand interface. The workflow of this device is very nice, it stays out of the way, and can be used to interface with all sorts of devices aside from the Fenix. It even understands S-Trig for Moog devices!"

Batchas - We are not comedians

video upload by batchas

"The track is based on Synton Fenix II & III, plus modded Vermona ER-9, recorded to a stereo track in one take.
I'm also using my Buchla system to assist the Synton Fenix II & III patch for the digital delay coming from my Scrotum Lab 'Espace Temps', the sample played by my Kesako 'Player & Reverb' module and the noise from 266e 5sent to Fenix phaser with a lot of feedback)."

Superbooth 20HE: This Is Not Rocket Science Fenix 4

Published on Apr 25, 2020 sonicstate

"We first took a look at the This is Not Rocket Science Fenix 4 at Superbooth last year. The Fenix 4 is a development of the original Fenix synthesizer made by the employees of Synton, a Dutch synthesizer manufacturer that went out of business in the early 80s. After crossing paths with some of the original designers and getting hold of the design files for the Fenix 1 and 2, This is Not Rocket Science decided to take on the mantle of developing the Fenix 4!

The Fenix is a bit of a swiss army of modular techniques, if you want a taste of what the original can sound like then go check out Aphex Twin’s classic Fenix Funk 5….

More information of the Fenix 4 at This is Not Rocket Science."

Synton Syntovox 222

images via this auction

"Synton Syntovox 222. As VC-10 VP330 Moog EMS SVC350 A+
110v or 220v configuration.
On auction this rare and vintage analog vocoder by Synton from the Netherlands. In production during the golden age of analog synthesizers Synton has gained cult like status by making superb gear like the Synton Syrinx, vocoders, modular systems and the later produced Fenix. This is the Synton Syntovox 222 handbuild in The Netherlands, serial number 107.
Synton can be compared to EMS, Sennheiser, Roland SVC350/VP330 and other high end studio vocoder manufacturers. A very rare instrument indeed that produces some of the smoothest and silkiest vocoder sounds possible...WOW Synton was Wendy Carlos's favourite vocoder brand, Aphex Twin is known to love Synton etc etc... These machines can be found in boutique studios around the world. Machine is in excellent condition, looks great, all knobs in place only one white knob-inlay is missing. Great addition to high class analog studio. BUYER GETS TO CHOOSE 110V OR 220V."

You can find some more images not included in the auction here. While there be sure to check out the header menu where you will find some other rarities including nice shots of the MOOG MinitMoog.

Dutch Instruments, Synton synthesizers

http://www.dutchsynth.nl/
Model 3000 pictured
"Fenix 2, Fenix XL Rumours:
After we stopped with producing the Fenix we hear rumours about the successor of the Fenix. We want to try to give an answer at these rumours.

1- Will there a Fenix 2/3 and or Fenix XL. The answer is: We don't know. It is no problem to design these units, but producing these will cost a lot of time and storage space, and these we don't have. Actually we have already proto pcb's of new modules ready. So i think the change for a successor is 50%.

2- The successor will be an add-on for the fenix. Maybe but also maybe not.

3- The Fenix XL will be available only for Fenix owners. The answer is NO. If we came with new units, it will be available for everybody but in a very limited edition. We hope to make a decision before half 2009."

Synton Fenix Modular

Update via the comments: "Electrically they're fine. Mechanically, they could use some help. Boards held in place with hot glue (and the wrong type that doesn't stick well to smooth surfaces), various pot shaft types, poor strain relieving, thin metal, etc. Wonderful in the design, poor in the construction. Fwiw, I've serviced at least 5 of them. Anyone that buys one should open it up after shipping and before powering up. The boards inside can flop over onto each other and short out."

Update: Be sure to check out the comments. Supposedly, this is Thighpaulsandra's Fenix. Link to studio shots posted here.

No title link. Two shots and details pulled via this auction. Sent my way via Vincent.

"Very rare semi modular synthesizer, one of only 75 designed and built by the original Synton team. A direct descendant of the Synton 3000 modular synthesizer and the Syrinx lead synth. Almost every module is unique: this means that every LFO and Envelope Generator (and most mixers, VCO's, VCF's) have different controls and ins/outs. The Fenix uses industry-standard 1 V/octave for pitch control, and positive gate signals. Internal audio levels are 4 VPP, control voltages are -4/+4 or 0-8 Volts. Uses sturdy banana jacks for patching.
3 VCOs
3 LFOs
1 Noise module (2 independent sources with VLFO output)
2 Multimode VCFs
1 24dB/oct low-pass VCF
4 VCAs
3 General-purpose mixers, plus 1 integrated in VCF3
2 Dedicated CV mixers
3 EGs plus extra AD in EG1
2 Portamentos
2 Ring modulators
1 Slew limiter
1 Sample & Hold generator
1 Comparator
2 External signal processors
2 Main CV inputs (3.5mm mini-jacks on rear panel)
2 Auxiliary CV inputs (3.5mm mini-jacks on rear panel)
2 Gate inputs (3.5mm mini-jacks on rear panel)

Synton Fenix

via this auction

"Here's one you don't see too often. A rare Synton Fenix--- 1 of 75 made. It has just come back from being serviced and needs nothing. It's in beautiful cosmetic condition with only a few small scratches (very hard to see.) As you may know, Synton made a small number of these back in 1997 through 2000. Too bad they stopped! This thing is unique with it's 3 VCOs, 3 VCFs, 3 EGs, 3 LFOs, 4 VCAs, etc. It will come with the power supply, original manuals and some banana patch cords."

Synton Fenix 1 - First owner, only 75 made - 1999

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Yes, an original Synton Fenix 1, very seldom seen for sale as there were only 75 made and people that own one tend to hold on to them as they are truly unique both in sound and design.

Made by the original Synton Team (Marc Paping and Bert Vermeulen) as they wished to create their ultimate compact modular synthesizer, and they succeeded. The sound is unique and versatile, knobs have a great feel and layout is very well thought-out.

This synth is sold by its original owner and has never been gigged. Home studio use only. Visual state is excellent, the potmeters however can use a cleaning as they are a bit crackling. The unit has never been opened nor has any attempt been made to clean the pots as to preserve the original state."

New EMS Synthi Faceplate

Image of the new EMS Synthi faceplate sent my way via ross. Click image for full size shot.

Via AH:

"I had talked to Robin Wood regarding production of the new Synthis. Apparently they will have 99% exact parts as the originals, the only being that the original reverb tank on the originals VCS3 and Synthi A has lapsed, and there is a comparable replacement. All the rest of the parts and circuits should be built to exact specifications as the original units produced from 1972 onwards. Although I had originally considered trading my Synton Fenix due to EMS lust, I think I am better off attempting to acquire one of Robin's new handmade units. I won't be able to easily replace the functionality of the feature set of my Synton Fenix, and it is far more rare of an instrument. My only apprehension is that Robin has stated that he would build units for the last 6 years, and it has been quite some time since they were produced. I think he is honest, and he has been absolutely helpful in my recent E-mail inquiries into his Synthis, however I am weary of waiting for many years in anticipation for a Synthi A, with the possibility that they may never be produced. Apparently he only has 40 Synthi briefcases left, so Synthi As will no longer be produced after this next batch. Furthermore, the company that produces the matrixboards for the Synthis is stopping production, so there is a new renewed urgency to finish production on these units, as well as to backstock this particular part for future repairs. Anyone on the list have a recent custom made Synthi from 1990-2001? It would be interesting to hear if these units differ from the originals, and how well they conformed to original specifications."

Update via Ross:
"Synthi differences

heard from Robin that there are more differences

1. no more Prestopatch ( see faceplate photo)
2. Pastel coloured knobs
3. no more sequencer
4. Joystick is not the same.

I wanted to buy an old silver face plate for my Synthi AKS as the china
graph is coming off, and was informed that the silver faceplate is no
longer being made.

I am desperate for anyone who has copied exactly the original
prestopatch Synthi AKS faceplate in any format pdf, etc or what ever
format as I want to get a new faceplate made up."
