Yamaha QX-1 midi data sequencer HxC function demo

Published on Jul 22, 2013 TheSynthFreq·199 videos

"Hi everyone! Here is a new video of an amazing device (HxC) used to take the place of the 5 1/4 floppy disk drive of the Yamaha QX-1 sequencer. The Yamaha QX-1 sequencer is about 16lbs, steel construction, full keyboard data entry controls (that make all those lovely vintage key sounds we all love to hear!) , 8 midi outputs, one midi in and one midi thru. Did I mention you can travel back to the 80s with this thing?? hehehe its in the secret menus. :)

Contents: QX-1 FDD construction and design, Common age related problems with the FDD HxC power up and demo of loading procedure (moving through songs) HxC and QX-1 internal interface connections and hardware view

Please enjoy :)
Important:
I'd like to personally thank Dav.R.Bailey for the awesome and wonderful HxC unit and Jim Atwood for his video on the QX-1 and HxC demonstration and technical support with Dav.R.Bailey. Thanks so much to you both for the much appreciated assistance in bringing QX-1 back to life. The install was a success. :)"

"Everlasting Love!" by Danielle TSF

Published on May 20, 2013 TheSynthFreq·198 videos

"2013: "Everlasting Love" by Danielle (TSF).
Hello! This new composition is a project for a very special occasion, a song for a special friend of mine who is celebrating an 80s themed wedding. I used the Yamaha QX-3 sequencer (daisy chained the synths essentially a complete 16 track sequencer with 1-4 channel per synth).
The synths used: Roland D-50 synth strings, track 1 channel 1, Alpha Juno-1 res bass track 3 channel 3, JV-880 short strings, live, EMU-Emax Se track 2, channel 2 new sampled 80s drums.
The drums I created on the emax se were sampled digital drums from the JV and highly processed through the VCF (analogue processing) of the Emax se. The Emax Se is then played in real time into QX-3 track 2 and sequenced there.
All tracks were sequenced in real time record mode, no step sequencing used although the QX-3 and QX-1 are capable of step recording mode.

Please enjoy!

"Hi! :) This new composition is part of a project for a special friend. I wanted to share this upbeat Jupiter-8 jam session. :)

I also used the QX-3 sequencer for daisy chaining several synths as a means of "tape recording" track1-track4 on the QX-3 digital midi recorder.
Recording through midi channels is a new endeavor, and is proving to be terrific! I will post a video on how to sequence synths (up to 16 possible) with 1-4 channels each. I typically use just 1 channel per synth to keep the midi chain free of data errors.
As long as there is a thru port on a synth or module or drum machine, it can be chained in a complex network of synthesizers to one QX-3 through 1 single midi cable while leaving the second Midi Out 2 port of the QX-3 free for other devices and even more possibilities. :) Everything is recorded in real time.
Synths used: Roland Jupiter-8 New lead 58 with Boss digital delay pedal, Alpha Juno-1 res bass, E-MU Emax SE 80s classic drums, D-50 syn comp strings 88.

I want to congratulate my friend on their upcoming 80s themed wedding! :)
Much love from TSF and the Synths!

:) TSF"

Yamaha Qx-1: record/playback mode

Published on Apr 30, 2013 TheSynthFreq·196 videos

"Hi! Here's the retro and awesome Yamaha Qx-1 in record/playback mode. I have it controlling three synths. The Roland D-50, Juno-1 which are both mono-timbral through midi and the E-MU emax SE with original new drum sounds I created by sampling the Roland JV-1080. I was going for the massive 80s drum sounds.
Please pardon the poor audio, this was recording on an iPhone so you can hear the disk drive and the qx-1 in studio setting and not direct connect."

Roland D-50: patch demo - "Helix" by Danielle

Published on Apr 23, 2013 TheSynthFreq·195 videos

"Hi :) Here is another original patch I created for the D-50 titled "Helix". This sound features all 4 partials, two of which are tuned to create a "5th" effect. This patch tends to have a swirling texture to it with the reverberation used within D-50."

"Mercury"- OB-Xa patch demo by Danielle
Published on Nov 20, 2012 by TheSynthFreq
"Greetings :) Here is a patch written for the OB-Xa, massive synthesizer. This patch has a long release time in the amplifier ADSR, with a delicate sine wave LFO to add some dimension and motion to this sound. The depth of the Sine-LFO is kept mild. Fc mild as well. With the OB-Xa, the Fc and the Fc Mod are linked together, almost as if there are two frequency knobs."

Roland JV-880: New programs by Danielle

YouTube Published on Sep 6, 2012 by TheSynthFreq

"Hi! :) Here are some of my new programs for the Roland JV-880!. Every patch was initialized, then saw waves/square waves are chosen then the programming is started from all zero-set parameters. The JV-880 (1992) is very similar to the Roland D-50 (1987) with 4 partials that can be turned on or off, individually programmed. Each of the partial's parameters can be filtered in several ways. There isn't a limit to what is sent through the TVF as there is with the D-50. JV-880 is tricky to program with just one knob and 7 buttons, but its so rewarding! Although the JV is digital, the JV can be very lush if programmed with some diligence and patience as all synths require. :)

Jupiter-8 patch edits: LFO waveforms and the VCF

Published on Jul 23, 2012 by TheSynthFreq

"Hi! :) Here are several examples of Jupiter-8s VCF (voltage controlled Filter) with different LFO WFs routed to the VCF for (modulation). I used LFO sine, square, triangle and random waveforms offered on Jupiter-8. These are very typical waveforms offered on most synths. Note: if a synthesizer does not offer multiple waveforms for the LFO, then the LFO is most likely modulated by a SINE.

LFOs are in most cases used for adding vibrato, tremolo and other commonly used modulations, but every waveform can be used to modify the VCF and the VCA rather than pitch to get some interesting synthy textures.

LFOs are used to introduce a repeating change in pitch (vco/ oscillator), or timbre/tone color (vcf/filter), and or volume (vca/amp) or any combination within.

I use the LFOs to VCF (LFO mod) to create an 'arp' effect as if an arp was being used but instead of running the arpeggiator (which has a rate of 1-20hz), I used the VCF LFO (saw waveform).
LFO on the Jupiter-8 has a rate from 0.05hz to 40hz. An LFO rate from 20-40hz range is into the audio range (normal human hearing is about = 20hz to 20kHz.
So, the LFO offers a very basic effect of an "arp" but is capable of faster rates than the arp itself.

LFO Waveforms -
Sine= smooth increase and decrease in pitch, timbre or volume/amplitude.
Saw= Types: Positive ramp (rise in value) /Negative ramp (fall in value). Saw creates a repetitive fall/rise of pitch, timbre or volume/amplitude.
Square= repetitive "on/off", "high-low" variation of pitch, timbre or volume/amplitude. Rand S/H= random signal, variation of pitch, timbre and amplitude/volume.

Jupiter-8s LFO can also modulate PWM (not shown).

Please enjoy :)"

Fun with Korg M-500sp MicroPreset (patches)

YouTube Published on May 15, 2012 by TheSynthFreq

"HI! :) This video features the awesome analogue Korg M-500sp (1977-80) synthesizer. It is a mono synthesizer with few controls or editing features but the 'synth' selection of sounds that can be edited can really be made useful with some mild fx added to give it dimension.
There are two versions of the synth, one with the speaker and the other without.

Synth controls:
Attack time, Sustain level (Decay and Release)
LFO rate and depth
Tuning
"Traveler" which is sort of the 'filter' of the Korg.
Port and time,
vibrato On/Off or Momentary
'Synthe 1' and 'synthe 2' are the only sounds that can be edited on the Korg, giving the user about 8 fully modifiable patches.

Korg M-500sp is an excellent bass/lead synthesizer.

Please enjoy! :)

I thought take the opportunity to record a Moog bass line while it was here hanging out on the floor of the studio.
Moog is awesome!

Synths used:
Roland Jupiter-8: filtered strings
Moog Taurus 3: Moog-Tastic bass (decay time edit), D-50 midi to Moog.

TR-808: ..to keep things funky!
