Yamaha YMF262 OPL3 programming using Evolution UC-16 and Yamaha V50

Yamaha YMF262 OPL3 programming using Evolution UC-16 (J.S.Bach Brandenburg no. 3)

Yamaha YMF262 OPL3 programming using Evolution UC-16

"A demonstration of my software for programming the sounds of the Yamaha YM3812 OPLII / YMF262 OPL3 FM synthesizer chip. The notes are played on a Yamaha V50 (being used as a MIDI controller) while the programming of the sounds is done on the 16 control knobs of the Evolution UC-16 control surface.

The PC contains a SoundBlaster AWE64 card which is controlled by a custom piece of software. The Yamaha V50 keyboard is plugged into the PC using MIDI and sends MIDI note on and note off messages. The Evolution UC-16 control surface is plugged into the PC using MIDI over USB and sends MIDI controller change (CC) messages. The custom software receives both types of messages and writes OPL3 chip register changes to the AWE64 card.

The controls are:

Carrier: multiple, level, attack, decay, sustain, release, waveform
Tuning
Modulator: multiple, level, attack, decay, sustain, release, waveform, feedback

A future version of this program may implement amplitude modulation (AM), vibrato (VIB), two envelope generator types (EG-TYP), key scale rate (KSR) and key scale level (KSL)."

Yamaha V50 Demonstration - 4OP FM synthesis workstation with PCM drum samples

Published on Jul 31, 2014 renevanderwouden

"Demonstration of the songs made on the Yamaha V50 synthesizer workstation. This synth has the famous fm sound chip but this is an improved version of the TX81Z rack synth.

Imagine the excellent sonic characteristics of the DX11 synthesizer or TX-81Z sound module with an improved sound chip. The V50 is the ultimate 4-Operator FM synth workstation comprising 16-note polyphony, a dual effects processor (with distortion), a large dual line, backlit LCD display, a drum machine, a 16,000 note sequencer and a 3.5in floppy drive to save your songs and voices!

The DVA function and built in voice-based pitch delay are two interesting features in this synth. It's great for percussive sounds such as short bass sounds, marimbas, clavinets, etc and should one pitch an operator really high and work with the pitch bender, one gets very cool ambient effects. It's very rare yet cheap in today's 2nd-hand market and coupled with an outboard (analog) filter it makes an unbeatable digital FM synth!

Yamaha TG77 FM Synthesizer

YouTube via Gtechture
"These all of the sounds played were created by Gtechture"

Yamaha DX-21 Frequency Modulation Synthesizer

Update via Gwenhwyfaer in the comments:
"The TG77 isn't just an FM synth, though. It has an FM engine in there - 6-operator, where each operator can be more or less freely routed (more than one feedback loop!) and take one of 16 waveforms - but there's also a ROMpler part of it, and each part (FM or ROMpler) has its own filter; and uniquely, the ROMpler output can be fed into the FM part (as in, into all 6 operators at once). Oh, and there are some nice effects on the end - two independent processors, and unlike the effects unit in my V50 I believe those processors actually have LFOs (and therefore choruses, flangers, etc) in them. (No, the V50 effects aren't a whole lot of use. Thanks for asking.) So - yes; the TG77 have lots of ways to sound lovely and warm, and they don't necessarily come from pure FM.

Having said which, free routing can turn FM from something a bit sterile to something snarly and uncontrollable (and really quite warm). Which is nice. :)"

"Oh, and the DX21 has an analogue chorus circuit in it (and can layer and detune two FM sounds even before that). Which helps a lot with warmth."

FM40P mkIII by NYZ

"Originally released January 17, 2022 available as limited physical edition CDr & name your price abridged digital on Psøma Psi Phi => pspsph.bandcamp.com/album/fm40p-mkiii

Unabridged digital only edition.

'In a third volume of his ongoing FM40P series of recordings, Dave Burraston continues to explore a myriad of tangents and timbres within the Yamaha V50, TX81Z and FB-01 machines - all of them uniquely apart from one another, their commonality being their identities as four-operator digital FM synthesizers. FM synthesis is well known for both its ability to convey otherwise impossible sounds and its general unapproachability as pure programming and sound design. Through this lens of context, Burraston's ability to direct these machines towards unforeseen and inexplicable pathways says much about the rarity of recordings like these. On a deeper level, Burraston is perhaps always testing, measuring, adjusting and analyzing, interacting with synthesis and its many vessels. Acting with the interests of both musician and scientist, NYZ brings us always to fresh perspectives and sonic locations that feel as if they are entirely new, often alien, but never predictable or repetitive. It's a lot to consider, as music and also as concept, but at the end of the day, you can always count on NYZ recordings for their utterly uncompromising sense of displacement and dizzying enchantment.'

released January 17, 2022

Generated during various sessions on 1-3 Jan 2021, 24 Feb 2021 and Oct 2013 at Noyzelab. Yamaha V50, Yamaha TX81Z, Yamaha FB-01 and MANIAC [custom sysex code for fractional note tuning/timings]. Yamaha V50 4-Op FM Workstation

Title link takes you to more shots sent in via Kwerk.

"The proprietary 720KB 3.5" floppy-drive went south four years after its purchase and the dealer asked $250 to replaced it! I searched for the drive's pin-out on the internet and soldered a flat-cable with matching pin configuration for a standard PC floppy drive. It's the same drive (with belt) used in SY-77."
