Yamaha SY99 Franken Grand: Scriabin Etude Op. 2 no.1

"This is a demo of the new piano that was developed for the Yamaha SY99.The Franken Grand was created by using the best samples from several pianos, including samples of a Bösendorfer Imperial. The samples really captures the warmth and weight of a large piano. AFM made it possible to create a stereo image with mono samples. The bank uses over 900 kb so it requires that the flash RAM of the SY99 be expanded. Memory boards for the SY99 can be purchased from Sector101. This piano could also be used with the Sector101 WaveBlade on a SY77.

Yamaha DX7, TX81z, SY35 and SY77: The Ultimate Review

"This review compares the sounds of a DX7, TX81z, SY35 and SY77 side by side. Over 20 years was spent creating the Off The Matrix patches, so the review will reveal the true strengths of each of the instruments. The first part will be a demonstration the DX7, TX81z and SY77 playing the same patches. To my surprise the TX81z sounded better for a couple of the patches. The video will cover the strengths of the TX81z and SY35 over the DX7. The video will end with demonstrations of the SY77 patches as well as the new SY99 samples. A TQ5 was used to play the TX81z patches, so through much of the video the SY35 is playing the TX81z patches.

"The TX81z is best known for the "Lately Bass" bass patch, so this is a demo of the new punchy and fat bass patches. Of course there are many other great patches in the TX81z banks, the "Deep Space" pad ends the video.. Many of the sounds were inspired from patches from the SY99. The patches go far beyond the "canned" samples sound of the ROMplers of the period.

YAMAHA SY77 - Synth Demo | Sounds, Patches & Presets

"Yamaha SY77 FM and AWM synthesizer demo featuring various, sounds patches and presets. The SY77 was a flagship Yamaha FM & AWM2 synth released in 1989. In this Yamaha SY77 synth demo I showcase pads, plucks, ambient soundscapes, strings, motion loops and more.

The Yamaha SY77 has 32-voices of polyphony (16 FM, 16 AWM) and features 6-operator AFM synthesis. This provides 45 algorithms, 3 feedback loops and 16 waveforms, and 16-bit AWM2 sample ROM waveforms which can all be used in various ways to craft layered and complex sounds.

The Yamaha SY77 also has multi-stage Time Variant Filters (lowpass, highpass, multi-pole) with resonance, LFO (sine, saw, triangle and sample & hold), 16-track sequencer (16K note capacity), 61 drum sounds, 16-part multi-timbrality, 4 independent digital effects (2 reverb units w/ 40 effect types & 2 modulation units), as well as a 61-key velocity sensitive keyboard with aftertouch. The SY77 can store up to 128 preset & 64 user patches, 16 preset & 16 user multi-patches. There is also a rack-mount version released in 1990, the Yamaha TG77.

The Yamaha SY77 brings the best of 6-operator FM synthesis and blends it with AWM2 samples to provide new sound design possibilities beyond traditional FM. The combination of these two methods was marketed as Realtime Convolution and Modulation Synthesis (RCM) and enables sounds not possible on a DX7 or DX7 II.

Some advantages of the SY77 include: 5 additional waves besides the standard sine; 45 algorithms (vs 32 on DX7); flexible routing of up to three feedback sources within any algorithm, ability to design custom-routed algorithm via MIDI; routing of FM signal through a configurable filter; and of course layering and manipulation of AWM2 PCM samples with the FM synthesis.

The Yamaha SY77 is still an exceptionally powerful FM synthesizer and can be found for good prices on the 2nd hand market. Build quality is also quite substantial. If you have the opportunity to acquire one and want to go beyond traditional FM and DX7 sounds, the Yamaha SY77, TG77, or even the SY99 are great options. "The SY99 is like having a super-sized sampling workstation with the synthesis and sounds of a DX-7mkII. Basically the same as the SY77 it features a larger 76 note keyboard with upgraded synthesis, sample memory, sequencer and more! For its synthesizer section it employs a 6 operator AFM synth engine similar to, if not better than, the original DX's.

Sampled preset sounds (AWM2) can then be fused with the AFM sounds to create entirely wild new sounds! And these sounds are quite shapeable thanks to the resonant multi stage Time Variant Filters which offer the ability to recreate the warm analog sounds of classic synths, or something entirely new.

- AFM FM frequency modulation+ RCM convolution this special FM functions allows to
use an internal noise generator or a sample element AWM as modulator input for an OP

- A patch is composed by 1 / 2 / 4 elements from different syntheses according to 10
soundpath structures (notes: NOTE: RCM algorithms number 9 and 10 use a PCM voice
or an imported sample as an FM modulator - but not as carrier - to an operator.

- AWM PCM SAMPLES the intenal 8 MB ROM wavetable contains 267 PCM waveforms
coded at maximum 48 kHz at 16 bits based on AWM2 synthesis (YM7119 also digital
filter).
- The internal ROM wavetable is organized into 4 main categories:
- Classic digital workstation based on a complex mix of FM + PCM samples playback
Even if time has passed, the Sy99 remains a true digital masterpiece.

There's an enhanced on-board sequencer section for creating your songs right on the SY99. It's got 16 tracks, from which channel 16 belongs to the built-in drum synthesizer. The sequencer can hold up to 27,000 notes, 99 patterns and 10 songs. And since the SY99 features 16 voices of polyphony for the AFM section, and another 16 voices for the sampled sounds, there are 32 voices to go around to build your song.

Not to mention there are 2 digital multi-effects processors which include reverb, delay, chorus, panning and more! Professional features for those of you want to really control and shape your sounds using the unique sounds (and complex synthesis) of a Yamaha FM synth with some special features up its sleeve.
