Syntronik & Yamaha DX7 - Sound Comparison Minimoog, OB-Xa, CS-80, Jupiter-8, JX-8P To SY99 & DX7

Power DX7
Published on Aug 7, 2017

"Syntronik is a sampled waveform based VST that emulates legendary synths such as Minimoog, Oberheim OB-Xa, Yamaha CS-80, Roland Jupiter-8, Roland JX-8P and Yamaha SY99.

As I can never afford (nor I have space to keep) all of those legendary synths, I bought Syntronik so that I get to play and learn more about those legendary synths.

As I’ve been making analog/subtractive synth-like patches on my DX7, I decided to put my DX7 MK1 against Syntronik with mighty legendary synths like Minimoog, OB-Xa, CS-80, Jupiter-8, JX-8P and SY99.

In this demo and comparison video, you will watch and hear sounds of the DX7 MK1 compared side by side to Syntronik legendary synths. Some sounds are close and others are different in many ways.

Although the DX7 can’t do everything that analog synths with a resonant filter can do, the DX7 can stand its own with unique sounds that analog synths may find very difficult to emulate.

I will take you thorough from very easy installation and set-up steps. I will give you a quick tour of Syntronik interface and legendary synths.

Comparison
Yamaha CS-80 with a synth brass for UK Alaska Vs Power DX7 signature patch, Alaska with a natural flanging effect

Yamaha SY99 with bell and electoric piano Vs Power DX7 signature patches, Bell X2 and E.Piano (beefed up version)

Minimoog with Resonant stab bass & Resonant Sequencing Vs Power DX7 signature patches, Resonant Stab Bass and Resonant Sequencing. As the DX7 doesn’t have a resonant filter, it needs to generate all harmonics using its FM synthesis. This produces a resonant filter-like, yet very distinctive tone with a ‘Sticky’ feel.

Roland Jupiter-8 with Resonant Unison Lead (16 Oscillators stack) vs Power DX7 signature Resonant Lead with ear piecing mid range (no unison for the DX7)!

Roland JX-8P/ JX-10 with Saw Pad Vs Power DX7 Signature Saw Pad
Oberheim OB-Xa with Rush Subdivisions and Van Halen Jump Synth Brasses Vs Power DX7 Signature Rush Subdivisions and Van Halen Jump Synth Brasses

Oberheim OB-Xa with a warm pad Vs Power DX7, Earth 1, the mother of all pads!

To finish this demo, I include a brand new DX7 song called ‘Resonance Beat’ by combining various Power DX7 signature patches, including Bell X2, Resonant Stab Bass, Resonant Sequencing, Earth 1 Pad. Also it includes a new Bell (like a small bell rolling around inside of a glass bottle), a Resonant Filter Sweep sounds and another Resonant Sequencing sound with a formant type tone when played soft (yes, you can have two different tones in a single patch for the DX7!).

Enjoy!"

Yamaha SY99 8MB Magic Memory Board from WohMart.COM

"WohMart.COM is proud to announce the Yamaha SY99 8MB Magic Memory Board (MMB) is now available!

This is an all-new designed-from-scratch 8 megabyte sample/MDR expansion board for the SY99. It installs under the bottom cover, and uses 2 of the connectors on the DM2 circuit board. It also needs 2 extra signals, taken from an IC on the board - so installation requires an intermediate level of technical skill (soldering to fine-pitch SMT ICs skills are necessary).

We will also be supplying upgrade EPROMs and CPUs if your SY99 needs them. Because blank CPUs are very hard to obtain, these do come at a premium price. If you already have v1.57 on your SY99, you only need our customised EPROM. Be sure to read the instructions on the order page carefully, and select the correct version when placing your order.

Full details, including installation instructions at the order page, [here]. The first batch (extremely limited quantities) will be shipping next month. Batch 2 will ship early next year."

FM EXPLORATIONS AND MICROTONAL DRONES FROM NYZ (AKA DAVE NOYZE, DAVID BURRASTON, NOYZELAB, BRYEN TELKO)

This is the first release by NYZ and is a superb musical collection of research areas classified to internal Noyzelab operations. Not even .MEDS label were informed of the secret processes underlying its creation, excepting that we know it involved Frequency Modulation (FM) synthesis! We have not been given any information regarding when this work was recorded, but we suspect the material spans at least a decade of David's FM algorithm research on numerous synthesizers, as well his own custom built ear deceiving gear...

According to one reviewer of David's previous musical output he "gleefully disrupts just about every standard convention of musical form you could think of, including those of so-called experimental musics."

Other reviewers have written that :
"His music is a bizarre, yet compelling journey investigating the outer realms of music generated on ancient & contemporary machines." "It's strikingly original audio that doesn't really sound like anything else I can think of." "Utterly sublime. So there you go, a life-affirming slab of mind-altering sound to reawaken you to the terrifying possibilities of creation."

"absolutely wreaks havoc" wrote Keith Fullerton Whitman on reviewing David's last release T. H. Cycle cassette on Important Records/Cassauna .

MATRIXSYNTH recently asked NYZ why he put together this new album of FM synthesis based explorations, and whether he would discuss some of the process behind it. The declassified information below has been put together by NYZ especially for a MATRIXSYNTH exclusive.

***BEGIN NYZ DRN4 DECLASSIFICATION REPORT***

DC REPORT STATUS: PARTIAL DECLASSIFICATION ONLY
PARTIAL DC STATUS: INCOMPLETE CELLULAR BINARY SPACETIME
PARTIAL DC LEVEL: SEMI-PICTORIAL_TEXTUAL_HIGHLIGHTS
FUTURE DC STATUS: _PENDING

The main reasons for making this album were an interest in FM synthesis in both analogue modular and MIDI/digital mediums. I had worked with digital FM synthesis since getting a Yamaha TX81Z when they came out back in 1987 (which I still have, along with another backup machine with a very hummy mains transformer which bleeds onto the outs). How me and another synth friend used to cry with drunken laughter at preset D11 Hole in 1... :) But after initially wondering whether I had just wasted about 350 UK pounds on an utter piece of shit... I quickly warmed to its better presets, and its very different approach to synthesis yielded enough interesting results early on for it not to get outed.

Yamaha SY99 Franken Grand: Scriabin Etude Op. 2 no.1

video upload by Off The Matrix

"This is a demo of the new piano that was developed for the Yamaha SY99.The Franken Grand was created by using the best samples from several pianos, including samples of a Bösendorfer Imperial. The samples really captures the warmth and weight of a large piano. AFM made it possible to create a stereo image with mono samples. The bank uses over 900 kb so it requires that the flash RAM of the SY99 be expanded. Memory boards for the SY99 can be purchased from Sector101. This piano could also be used with the Sector101 WaveBlade on a SY77.

YAMAHA SY77 - Synth Demo | Sounds, Patches & Presets

video upload by synth4ever

"Yamaha SY77 FM and AWM synthesizer demo featuring various, sounds patches and presets. The SY77 was a flagship Yamaha FM & AWM2 synth released in 1989. In this Yamaha SY77 synth demo I showcase pads, plucks, ambient soundscapes, strings, motion loops and more.

The Yamaha SY77 has 32-voices of polyphony (16 FM, 16 AWM) and features 6-operator AFM synthesis. This provides 45 algorithms, 3 feedback loops and 16 waveforms, and 16-bit AWM2 sample ROM waveforms which can all be used in various ways to craft layered and complex sounds.

The Yamaha SY77 also has multi-stage Time Variant Filters (lowpass, highpass, multi-pole) with resonance, LFO (sine, saw, triangle and sample & hold), 16-track sequencer (16K note capacity), 61 drum sounds, 16-part multi-timbrality, 4 independent digital effects (2 reverb units w/ 40 effect types & 2 modulation units), as well as a 61-key velocity sensitive keyboard with aftertouch. The SY77 can store up to 128 preset & 64 user patches, 16 preset & 16 user multi-patches. There is also a rack-mount version released in 1990, the Yamaha TG77.

The Yamaha SY77 brings the best of 6-operator FM synthesis and blends it with AWM2 samples to provide new sound design possibilities beyond traditional FM. The combination of these two methods was marketed as Realtime Convolution and Modulation Synthesis (RCM) and enables sounds not possible on a DX7 or DX7 II.

Some advantages of the SY77 include: 5 additional waves besides the standard sine; 45 algorithms (vs 32 on DX7); flexible routing of up to three feedback sources within any algorithm, ability to design custom-routed algorithm via MIDI; routing of FM signal through a configurable filter; and of course layering and manipulation of AWM2 PCM samples with the FM synthesis.

The Yamaha SY77 is still an exceptionally powerful FM synthesizer and can be found for good prices on the 2nd hand market. Build quality is also quite substantial. If you have the opportunity to acquire one and want to go beyond traditional FM and DX7 sounds, the Yamaha SY77, TG77, or even the SY99 are great options. Hope you enjoy this Yamaha SY77 synth demo."

MMTA SYNTHFEST 2013: Dave Bristow & The History of Yamaha FM Synthesis

Published on Mar 18, 2013 matrixsynth·271 videos

This is a fascinating and significant bit of synthesizer history starting with the Yamaha CS80 through the DX7 from the man that was actually there. Yamaha hired Dave Bristow to showcase the Yamaha CS80 followed by asking him to provide input on their first FM synth the GS1.  It was sold as a preset synth but in the video you will see a programmer for it.  Dave was the person that Yamaha had program the presets for it followed by the GS2, DX7 and more.  You'll see the prototype for what became the DX7.  The prototype actually had a DX5 label and a huge breadboard of chips.   He co-authored "FM Theory and Applications" with Dr. John Chowing, the man that discovered FM synthesis at Stanford Unniversity, and he was a member of IRCAM.  Do not miss this. Bookmark it for when you have time if you need to. Dave also had a prototype SY77 at the event. You can see it in my video walkthrough as well as my event pics here.  An interesting side note is John Bowen was at the event, so we had both the man responsible for the presets on the Prophet-5 and other early Sequential Circuits synths, and the man behind the DX7 and other Yamaha FM presets.  Pretty incredible bit of synth history there.

Dave Bristow is part of the Music Technology group at Shoreline Community College where the MMTA Spring SYNTHFEST was held. Via Shoreline:

"Dave Bristow was born in London and began to study music on the piano at an early age. He graduated from university with a BSc in Psychology but soon turned his musical talents full-time and worked as a professional piano/keyboard player with jazz fusion, rock and folk bands. His interest in electronic music and sound steered him towards synthesizer design and development and he played a key role creating factory voicing for the well-known DX7 synthesizer and indeed most of Yamaha's FM synthesizers up to and including the SY99, and is internationally recognized as one of the important contributors to the development and voicing of FM synthesis, co-authoring a text-book on the subject with Dr John Chowning called "FM Theory and Applications". Dave has toured the world as a professional synth demonstrator teaching courses on synthesis and related acoustics in Europe and the USA. He spent three years at Pierre Boulez's music research institute, IRCAM in Paris, running a MIDI and synthesis studio and working with the visiting composers. He moved to the United States in 1995 to work with the electronic music company Emu Systems, Inc. in product development with sampling and filter based synthesizers. Following that in 2002, he began working again with Yamaha as a consultant, focusing on the introduction and support of their small format audio chip series (SMAF) for cell-phones and other mobile devices with ringtones and system sounds. More recently he ran and developed a non-profit community music school for four years on Bainbridge Island, and now spends his time teaching electronic music production and synthesis, and playing with his jazz trio."

NYZ DRNH Limited Cassette Release on Gamma Mine Featuring Hinton Instruments Modular

Dave Burraston aka NYZ/noyzelab has a new release out titled DRNH soon available on cassette and digital download. You'll find some info on the gear used exclusively for MATRIXSYNTH further below, but first, here is some info on the release via noyzelab:

"Launching Gamma Mine's explorations into electronic systems music is 'DRNH', a new release from award winning artist Dave Burraston. “DRNH” continues 2016's releases from the ever-prolific artist, who has released works on labels including .MEDS, Feral Tapes, Computer Club and ALKU, this year alone.

Under his NYZ alias, Burraston studies modulation-based synthesis techniques from his Noyzelab studio, NSW, Australia. As an extension to the activities captured on 'DRN4' (.MEDS, 2016), the systems utilised on “DRNH” have been broadened to include additive synthesis, ring modulation and non-linear waveshaping alongside Burraston's staple frequency modulation synthesis techniques. The following is a declassified listing of equipment used in this research:

Hinton Instruments Music Lab modular prototype
Yamaha SY99 & TG77 with cellular automata generated microtunings
MANIAC/Ulamizer-II cellular automata sequencing
Tiptop Z-DSP & Numberz with custom programs

The result is a collection of recordings which take the listener from sci-fi atmospheres (“NYZ-1_HI-SIN”) to whirring electronics (“NYZ_Z-DSP+NUMBERZ-DRN1”), playful FM studies (“FM80Pcellular”, “FM60Pcellular”) to meditative drones (“CSN2-excerpt1-mono”, “DRNH”). “DRNH” releases on 9th December 2016 on white C90 cassette and digital formats:

A1. NYZ-1_SHPR_mono (01:40)
A2. NYZ-1_HI-SIN (07:17)
A3. NYZ-1_FM20Pcellular (02:04)
A4. NYZ_Z-DSP+NUMBERZ-DRN1 (06:42)
A5. FM80Pcellular (05:08)
A6. CSN2 excerpt1-mono (14:29)
A7. FM60Pcellular (05:42)
B1. DRNH (44:44)"

MATRIXSYNTH - NYZ - DRNH synth info leak

--- NYZ:DRNH INFO LEAK MSG BEGINS ---

Matrixsynth asked NYZ for some extra info on this release, so this extra bonus snippet is provided exclusively!

=>

Thanks for asking for some more info on the NYZ - DRNH release, this tape has been great fun to put together. Finlay Shakespeare (Moog Sound Lab UK engineer/tech & also the guy who runs Future Sound Systems eurorack modular) has done a great mastering job on it for his new Gamma Mine label.

The equipment I listed up on Noyzelab is not everything that was used.. but covers a fair bit of ground. I can give you a few extra bits of info though :

NYZ_Z-DSP+NUMBERZ-DRN1 - Made using the Intellijel/Cylonix Cyclebox-II+Expander going into a Tiptop Z-DSP with some custom programs I've written. A big thanks to Richard D James for giving me my first blank Z-DSP cartridge.. "ere u go, get on with summat" or words to that effect :) In this case it was using various ring modulation schemes. For a great reference I highly recommend Graham Hinton's ModMix application pages which details a range of ringmod/wave shaping algorithms :

applications.htm

moreapplications.htm

CSN2 excerpt1-mono - This is from some Hinton Instruments Music Lab modular sessions in 2013, and the methodology is pretty much the same as discussed in 'NYZ DRN4 Declassified' on Matrixsynth. A type of FM/additive/RM switched synthesis controlled via a cellular automata network (MANIAC cellular automata sequencer). The CSN is referred to in my notes as "Complicated Switching Network" so using complex systems to re-route sounds, a bit like a telephone network, imagine a bunch of ants running around repatching a modular synth and thats probably something like what's happening.. I often set these up and run them for days, take a few recordings here and there, it was nice just to listen sometimes as well, not to take a recording. I end up doing that a lot with these realtime generative/algorithmic systems because (depending on the parameters) they can take a long time to unfold, and sometimes you might just want the bit that happens after a few days, just let the system run till then..

FM60Pcellular - This was all done on a TG77 sequenced by the MANIAC cellular automata sequencer, with the original programming done using the SY99. I like to program on the SY99, but these days the outputs are getting very scratchy, so I transfer stuff over MIDI to the TG77 and do the final setup/mix with that + its got 8 individual outputs so little bit extra mixing scope. The voicing on this is a simple mix of FM/AWM voices, the bassline sound is the AWM voice. There's a great resource on SY99/TG77 programming written by Herbert Janssen, which also includes a section on waveshaping :
