R.A. Moog 701 Drum Synthesizer Module

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction - re-listed here.

"This is an R.A.Moog "701 Drum Synthesizer" module hand made by Bob Moog himself back in the late 60's...!

It was built for Eric Siday, one of Moog's first customers, but was also used in the historic "Jazz In The Garden" concert in 1969. You can read more about it here...

The 701 module was a 'prototype' and didn't ever get to the production stage. It seems only eight were ever made with six of them currently in the "Museum of Music" in Paris.

Here is a link to more info and photo's of the Paris system...

At the bottom of that page you can see Bob setting up the system with the eight modules in place.

I cannot call this *rare*... because that isn't an accurate description. It is basically a completely unobtainable one-off and a true piece of Moog history, and obviously analogue musical instrument history, which the price here reflects (...as a starting point)

This unit was designed as a part of a system, but I have managed to get it to make sounds..! So I have also included links to a couple of short videos I made..."

R.A. Moog 701 Drum Synthesizer - Part 1

"Here is my first video of the "R.A. Moog 701 Drum Synthesizer". I managed to get some sounds out of it - even though it was meant to *work* with the full "one-off" system as built by Bob in 1970. I think in the system it might behave a little more "drum-like"...!?! Ha!"

Jupiter 8 - Arpeggiator Inspired.

YouTube Uploaded by noddyspuncture on Sep 10, 2011

"Messing with my JP8 today - I focused on the arpeggiator, and came up with this. It has made me think, I should do some more with the thing. Some amazing possibilities there. That Arpeggiator is awesome...!"

Jupiter 8 - Arpeggiator and Filter Inspired

Uploaded by noddyspuncture on Sep 10, 2011

"Alrighty - so I moved on to 'filter tweaking' along with the arpeggiator, which threw up this little idea. I find the Jupe almost as inspiring as the CS80, it's an amazing machine. Get your hands on it and it seems to grab you and take you off in surprising directions. Gonna try triggering the arpeggiator from a sequencer sometime. That might be interesting..!"

Jupiter 8 - Promenade from PaaE by Mussorgsky

Uploaded by noddyspuncture on Sep 10, 2011

"Well, I suppose it had to be done. Here is 'Promenade' from Modeste Mussorgsky's "Pictures At An Exhibition" - played on Jupiter 8 with arpeggiator backing and some filter control where there was space for a free hand..! After all - "ELP Tribute" and all that, it's the done thing - eh?"

Korg PS3100 & SQ10

YouTube Published on May 18, 2012 by noddyspuncture

"Here is my PS3100 being sequenced by my SQ10. It is a six note sequence which turns into simple 're-triggering' when I turn up the portamento on the SQ10... which is where I play the chords, to add some melody. The PS3100/SQ10 combination seems pretty versatile even though the SQ was intended for the MS range. No 'CV in' on the PS though but there are ways around that...;c)"

Korg PS3100 - Squarewave Mod - Rhythmic VCA

YouTube Published on May 5, 2012 by noddyspuncture

"Another of my PS3100 videos. On this one I am modulating both Osc, Filter and the VCA with ModGen1 with a square wave and set to a slow speed. Playing on the down stroke as it were, you just get 'blips'. Some cool rhythms can be coaxed out of her this way...;c)"

Yamaha CS60 - Aftertouch to LFO Speed modification

Published on Sep 19, 2018 noddyspuncture

"The CS60 is an amazing and powerful synthesiser - but it's no CS80. As we know, the main differences between the two are that the CS60 is just a single channel instrument and also that it doesn’t have the individual [polyphonic] aftertouch which makes the CS80 so special. But there is another thing the CS80 can do which the CS60 cannot - and that's the touch response (aftertouch) control of the LFO speed. I decided to modify my CS60 so that it could and this really does take it so much closer to it’s big brother sonically. I still need to decide where to put the depth control which is why it's hanging loose while I test & demo the mod - but as you can see and hear - it makes a world of difference, taking it much closer to the CS80 and opening up possibilities never before seen on a CS60..!

So I am offering this *aftertouch* modification, which I can perform on your CS60 in roughly just over an hour - but you would need to bring the synth to me. You’d also have the added bonus of a cup of tea and also get to see my CS80 - if you’re lucky. ☺

Korg PS3100 - Squarewave Modulating Osc, Filter & VCA

YouTube Published on May 7, 2012 by noddyspuncture

"This time I also have full depth modulation on the VCA. You just get a 'blip' playing on the up beat, when the square also happens to be lowest ~ VCA closed. Get it right and you can get some interesting rhythms going..!"

Yamah CS-70M string sound

YouTube via noddyspuncture | December 09, 2010 |

Yamaha CS-70M ... modulation fun!

YouTube via noddyspuncture | December 09, 2010 |

"This time I am messing with the modulation parameters and routing destinations on my CS-70M. Sorry about the focus here and there - looks like a camera problem, but hey... you can still hear it. Actually, the accidental *visual effects* make it a little more interesting....?! My CS-80 also makes a cameo appearance - she was just itching to join in...;c)"

Korg MS-20 & MS-10 - "FrankenSynth" #1

Published on Jul 11, 2016 noddyspuncture

"Here is my Korg MS-20/MS-10 'FrankenSynth'. I bolted them together and installed a 5 octave keyboard with a few other custom modifications. In this video the synths are being sequenced... I'll be making another video soon where I will be playing it instead. I am using the PWM input I added to the MS-20 and also using the dedicated modulation depth wheel. R.A.Moog Modular - at the 7th Wave Electronic Music Meeting, 2019.

Published on Mar 17, 2019 noddyspuncture

"This was my 'performance' at the Birmingham Synthesizer Meet - Saturday 16th March 2019. The big Moog isn't geared up to do the kind of stuff the Euro-rack guys can do - so I needed to get inventive and find some 'workarounds'...! Best on headphones by the way... 😉"

Minimoog & Source sequence - using 960 '4th row' modification...

Published on Mar 22, 2020 noddyspuncture

"I like building custom modifications - especially when they surprise me by ending up being even more useful and amazing than I envisaged..! This one is, even if I say so myself, one of my best so far without a doubt. The 960 sequencer is great but when you use it to play two separate lines on two separate synths, you still only get one row left for the control of the filter. I use my 960 via a gate sequencer so the 'skip/normal/stop' mode switches are redundant which gave me the idea of adding a '4th row' to the 960. I was thinking of removing them but in the end I just built the row of pot's into an external plastic strip - you can see it on the Minimoog there - it's not fully finished and I've yet to cut it down to size and stick some knobs on. It's on a 'flying lead' and on this video is controlling filter CV of one synth with the third row of the sequencer controlling the other. Opens up a whole world of new possibilities... I knew it was a good idea... 😍"
