Roland HS-60 / Juno-106 SN 540181

"The Roland HS-60 is IDENTICAL to the Juno 106 but it has onboard speakers, HOW COOL! Same circuit boards, voice chips, everything. You've heard it and you know how good they sounds and now you need it in your arsenal. Super lush, deep strings, sweeps, filters, effects, organs, AND it is fully equipped with midi so you can run it with your modern digital setup. This one is made in May of 1985.

Its in nice shape with next to no wear. The 80's graphics look fantastic. There is a little wear here an there but nothing much. You can see from the pictures how clean it is. There are no scratchy pots for they have been cleaned. All of the black coating was removed from all voice chips and sound fantastic. New blue LED's, because they look awesome. The numeric display, the "A" preset LED and one of the chorus' were kept red. I think it looks cooler with a mix of both colors. The original battery has been replaced with a new one and a socket so if the battery ever goes out, just pull the battery and pop a new one in. The 2-prong power socket has been updated to a universal 3-prong socket. This one is road ready and needing to see some stage and studio action."

"ROLAND Juno-106S, a classic analog synthesizer with built in speakers. Unlike HS-60 which was a cheaper hobbyist version of Juno-106, Juno-106S feature same functions with Juno-106 but with speakers."

Hmm... I thought the HS-60 was functionally the same, just different packaging and geared towards the home consumer market. What is interesting is that the HS-60 is not the Juno-60 with speakers.

Roland HS 60 Analog Synthesizer

via this auction BIN: $375

Note this is the 3rd one to go up in the last two weeks. Interesting how relatively rare synths can come up in runs like that. I'm counting six total this year searching on Roland HS 60 here and on MATRIXSYNTH-B.

Roland Juno-106S | Afterglow

Published on May 31, 2019 Alex Ball

"The Roland Juno-106 is probably one of the most famous polyphonic synthesizers from the 80s but it had a couple of lesser known variations; the HS-60 and the 106S, both of which had built-in speakers, but were otherwise identical.

The 106S was apparently sold in Japan with the HS-60 sold to the rest of the world, but if you know anymore let me know!

The story of this track was that it was something I'd written last year for demoing the 106 for my "Land of the Rising Sound" documentary. On the day of recording there was so many synths and drum machines to setup and record that we ran out of time and the intended 106 and Super-JX demos had to be dropped. On the plus side, Ra @ MadFAME and synth4ever did some great demos instead, which you can enjoy in the film.

Anyway, I've now got to record the demo that never was and extend it out into a longer thing. Hope you enjoy it!

Sounds:
Roland Juno-106S (1984)
Roland SH-101 (1982)
Roland TR-707 (1984)
Oberheim DX (1982)
Yamaha DX7 (1983) Not filmed, but playing the odd FM chime if you listen out
Ibanez Jem 7DBK (2002)
Fender Blues Junior II mic'd with SM57
Boss CE-2 Chorus
Vocals recorded with an AKG C414S
Also some Fairlight drum fills that you'll probably recognise from "Owner of a Lonely Heart"

Torvill and Dean were not made by Roland."

As far as the synth engine goes the HS-60 is the same. It just has a different case. BTW, check out this custom three octave HS-60 minus speakers.

Roland Synth Plus HS-60 (Juno 106) and Vermona DRM III do Moroder / Jarre / that 80s arpeggio thing

YouTube Uploaded by nibkey on Jun 13, 2011

"This is a very quick demo of some analogue kit in my studio as there are not too many demos of actual HS-60 nor many of the DRM III backing anything.

Drums - DRM III with a bit of compression, reverb and pingpong delay in Live

Bass and pad - HS-60 with reverb and delay in Live

Criticisms - Arrangement is crap - yes, it was literally made in 30 mins. It's derivative - yep, was meant to be a sort of early to mid 80s thing with the bassline and as it was quick I just used simple chords.

If you do like any of this, or are intrigued anyway, check out my actual, properly produced music at www.soundcloud.com/britishairwaves (including Dave Pearce's Radio 6 Music track of the week "Vellocet")"

Roland Juno HS-60 with Wood Sides

via this auction

"The Roland HS 60 is an interesting thing. It is a Juno 106 with built-in speakers, yet it has a completely different name. Well if you are here you already know about the Juno 106. There isn't much to be said which has not already been said. It is the most versatile analog synth ever. It can be used for any purpose and in any context. It is arguably the greatest synth of all time.

This one is in excellent condition, it has been recently serviced and voice chips have been replaced. It would be difficult to find one in such a well-kept condition. It currently resides in a smoke-free home, underneath a soft blanket, but it is time to find a new home for it as im downsizing my studio."

"This is a perfectly functioning Roland HS-60, for those who don't know the HS-60 was the home version of the Juno 106, the only difference being it has built in speakers. This is the ONLY difference. The internal electronics are exactly the same. The sound is exactly the same."

My first Roland Juno 106 (HS-60) Demo

YouTube via 86scirocco8v
"My first Juno 106 video.

In the pictures you see my Roland HS-60 which is a Juno 106 with built in speakers, the sound engine is exactly the same.

I created a midi file and then let it play while I tweaked the synth live.

Sorry for the lack of video, I thought I pushed record but then at the end of it all I noticed that I forgot. Luckily the audio did get recorded. I will make sure to press it for the next video :)"

1985 Roland HS-60 Synth Plus SN 645777 with Blue LEDs & Chicken Knobs

via this auction

"A Juno 106 with built in speakers and amplifier. Marketed for the home user hobbyist. It even has a sheet music stand option. It's cool if you can find one because it's like a portable Juno 106 that you can play anywhere with those built in speakers! Another feature of this synth is its stereo MIX IN, a stereo input for jamming with other sources of music through the internal speakers. If you're going to use the HS-60 in the studio, you'll need to insert a 1/4 inch plug into the headphone output to bypass the internal speakers since they will continue to output sound when a plug is inserted into only the main audio outs, and this can be quite annoying for studio work."

ROLAND HS-60 / JUNO 106S Vintage Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"“Synth has just been serviced & calibrated; one voice chip has been replaced with a brand new modern equivalent chip from Analogue Renaissance in Belgium; all sounds have been reloaded & all settings are back to factory reset; all knobs & sliders have been cleaned; all functions have been tested & working fine. Has almost no wear or damage of any kind & is in superb condition.”

Never heard this rumor before: "It’s been touted that the HS-60 / JUNO 106S has a fatter sound than the regular JUNO 106 (apparently because of the amplifier circuitry) but I don’t know enough about the JUNO 106 to give an unbiased opinion... Maybe it’s the fact that its tame looks contrast the huge, polyphonic analogue sound!"

Roland HS-60

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The HS-60 is a Juno 106 with the addition of internal speakers and an audio input jack that allows players to send an external audio signal through the internal speakers.

This unit is in "closet classic" condition, extremely clean and fully functional. It doesn't appear to have ever been gigged. The only cosmetic blemishes are a small scratch on the lower back panel (pictured) and a very small scratch on the top next to the left music stand holder.

All 6 voices sound great and the chorus is crystal clear. Internal speakers sound surprisingly good, and the sliders all move without noise. All 6 voice chips are original, and voice chip #2 has been serviced (acetone treatment)..."
