Musical Applications of Microprocessors and Hybrid Synthesizers

via Chris Ryan on the Rhodes Chroma list:

"This month I've posted an excerpt of Chroma-related material from Musical Applications of Microprocessors by Hal Chamberlin. I've wanted to add this to the site for years; thanks to Chris Borman [21030194+] for contacting the author, who kindly provided reprint permission, and for supplying scans of the relevant pages."

Vocoding with a Piano

via A: "A "speaking piano" reciting the Proclamation of the European Environmental Criminal Court at World Venice Forum 2009, concept & realization by Austrian composer, Peter Ablinger, courtesy of Viennese art collective Wien Modern. Unfortunately the clip is only available in German (3sat is a German language culture TV channel broadcasted in Germany, Austria and Switzerland). I haven't found any English reference to that amazing project on the web yet, but I think the clip is interesting for speakers and non-speakers of German alike, though!
Best regards,
A"

Speaking Piano

"A 'speaking piano' reciting the Proclamation of the European Environmental Criminal Court at World Venice Forum 2009. Unfortunately it's all in German, but what the piano says is all English, and it's really neat to watch." Update: "UPDATE: Astera on hackaday wrote a rough translation: Pretty amazing, how all of a sudden the words of the Declaration become understandable to a European Environmental Criminal Court. Wien Modern was one out of ten cultural institutions asked for an artistic contribution to the event in Palazzo Ducale in Venice. The ambitious goal was to make this message audible with musical means, without falling back to a simple setting. Berno Polzer: I think, its partially understandable, partially not. And it plays well with the limits of our construction abilities. That is, we hear sounds that obviously arent normal Music, but neither they are language, and one could say that sometimes, a bridging happens. Personally, I think you can understand individual words even without knowing the text, and the Eureka moment happens when you see the text, and suddenly, the language is there. Yet another bridge: Miro Markus, an elementary school student from Berlin, narrated the text for the performance: Youth as a hope for the older generation. The Austrian composer Peter Ablinger transferred the frequency spectrom of the childs voice to his computer controlled mechanical piano. Peter Ablinger: I break down this phonography, meaning a recording of something the voice, in this case -, in individual pixels, one can say. And if I have the possibility of a rendering in a fairly high resolution (and that I only get with a mechanical piano), then I in fact restore some kind of continuity. Therefore, with a little practice, or help or subtitling, we actually can hear a human voice in a piano sound."

ViRay's Inspiration (2009 Numeric Synthesis)

YouTube via VironCybernet
"A new short song made to sound like the one that inspired me to try to make synthesizers as a child.
Played first as a "musical number", one that sounds like music when sent through a serial port directly to a speaker, then as synthesized using the same functions as the 1985 Speech Synthesizer Original Disk. This is a new variant technique that may enable everyone to write new songs that can have the same "energy" as their favorite songs. 30 years after the inspiration, this has been done."

Mystery - Nokia Rumba Tune

YouTube via mysteritmo
"Not being able to escape the Nokia Tune whereever I go, I decided to have a bit of fun with it instead of getting annoyed. How would it sound as a poppy rumba tune? I used the Korg KR-55 drum machine for rhythm and the keyboard sounds comes from the Casio Tonebank CT-395. Everything is played live since the Casio doesn't have any type of sync. I bought the keyboard at a garage sale for only 6 Euro and I think it actually has some very cool sounds! Play in HQ and enjoy! :-)"

Aurora - Make Music on your Pocket PC Part 2

YouTube via 4pockets
"http://www.4pockets.com
Aurora Sound and Light - Aurora is our all new pattern based musical sequencing software for the Pocket PC, and best of all, you dont need to have a musical bone in your body in order to create great tunes. By simply choosing a musical scale every note you play is in perfect tune, leaving you to choose what sounds best. Great, but what does Aurora offer the more accomplished musician I hear you ask? Well, Aurora hides a lot of its complexity from novice users, but by switching to advanced mode you get full control over the built in instruments and effects, as well as many advanced modes such as the Atomizer and XY Mode which allows you to manipulate sound in real-time. You can create your own instrument from recordings made using the built in microphone. Just think, a full drum kit of you beatboxing into the microphone! Aurora allows a mixture of pattern based recording and live performance. You can piece together complete compositions, or simply improvise a performance, all of which can be captured to a file, for use as a ringtones, or to share with others. An integrated mixer, combined with the ability to add audio effects and layer automation means that you achieve a pretty sophisticated sound in a fun and user friendly way. http://www.4pockets.com http://www.twitter.com/4pockets"

Synthesizer Music Outer Space

"I was playing around my new Juno-Di Synthesizer today and came up with this piece of Synthesizer Music. All the samples are recorded directly from the Juno-Di. No editing was done except adjusting the volume of the tracks in Cubase LE 4

This is the first Synthesizer I ever had and I'm quite excited and pleased with the sound of Juno Di. Excellent Synth when you look at price vs. features.

I sure do like the Blade Runner soundtrack, always seems to inspire me."
