Hitachi Lo-D HMS-30 Memory Synthesizer (1978)

Published on Jul 21, 2015 Patrick McMaster

"I've been trying to track one of these rare units down since I joined the Hitachi family in September 2013. I finally got an alert that one was available on Yahoo! Auctions Japan. I was the one and only bidder, and for ¥20,000 it was mine! The size and weight made regular shipping uneconomical, so I opted for SeaMail. That was just under two months ago, and now here it is being played for the first time!

It's a two oscillator, fully polyphonic synth independent filter cutoff modulation w/LFO (warble) and amplitude modulation w/LFO (tremolo) per oscillator. It has global pitch modulation with a third independent LFO (vibrato), resonance and cutoff frequency knobs per oscillator, limited envelope control on osc 2...nothing terribly crazy in terms of modulation, but fun and more capable of sound shaping then I expected.

The built in preset-only drum machine sounds as cheesy as you would expect for late 70s analog, but the star of the show in terms of extras is a built in sequencer. Now I only need to figure out how the heck it works...

In this video I'm running it through a Moog Minifooger Drive into a Roland keyboard amp."

Meet the Arp Odyssey : SYNTHFEST 2015 - Teaser for India's First Synth Event

Published on Jul 14, 2015 SynthFest

"When Bob Moog introduced the world to the Minimog D, he had a clear picture in his mind – create an electronic musical instrument which sounds beyond the realm of it's acoustic bretheren. An instrument that used only electricity to produce sound. Sounds that would power electronic music for generations to come and create new genres of music that were both unimaginable and outright
radical at the time.

Synthesizers have since been used on an unfathomable number of hit records ranging from grimey hiphop, pounding psychadelic trance, dirty acid house to facemelting drum 'n' bass, ultramelodic
synthpop and cosmic ambient journeys. Thanks to popular artists like Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, Daft Punk, Keith Emerson, Jordan Rudes and Georgio Moroder, synthesizers of various makes and types
started becoming a household name and ruled the minds and speakers of music enthusists and musicians alike.

45 years later, we want to celebrate what synthesizers have been to us - a means to communicate our music in a way that wouldn't quite be possible without them. We want to celebrate their sound,
their quirks, their secrets, their analogness, their digitalness, their madness and uncanny ability to make people smile.

We call this celebration – Synthfest.

Two days of playing, tweaking, patching, filtering, sequencing, resonating, syncing and best of all – enjoying synthesizers to our heart's content. Great synths from the likes of Roland, Moog, Waldorf,
Korg, Arp and more will be present to make these two days impossible to forget and full of sonic ferocity.

This appears to be the first one ever posted on MATRIXSYNTH.

"First time on Ebay an extremely rare Soviet vintage analog electronic drum synthesizer "POLYGON UDS". It is an "offspring" of infamous "Marsh UDS" which differs only by different casing (Poligon is a rack) and all inscriptions in English. Intended to be an export device for western market. It is a powerfull 5 channel analog drum synthesizer, produced in the USSR in 1980s. It has 5 identical channels (which can be used & edited freely, inscriptions like "snare", "bass" e.t.c. are just nominal). On every channel you can change: trigger signal sensitivity, base tone pitch, HF or LF, glissando, noise/tone ballance, noise decay, click, channel's volume. Each channel has trigger Input on a standart 1/4 mono Jack for 5 pads. It can be triggered from any drum pads like classic Simmons or modern Roland\Yamaha or any audio source - line outs of the drum machine or soundcard or CV Gate etc. The module has two stereo Outputs (1/4 Jack) ballanced & unballanced and one mono Headphone Output (1/4 Jack). This is an armoured antitank piece of gear and the sound it produces is very unique! Can synthesize huge pallete of sounds - from modern punchy BD & SD to classic 808 or 909 subs or claps e.t.c.."

OSCA non operational on this one but you don't see these too often. Note the slightly different color scheme compared the orange on black one here.

"Early 1980's synth with those classic sounds. This synth outside and in is in perfect shape especially for its age. Unit is housed in its own road case so great for gigs. All keys are clean and play perfectly. Bass synth and OSCB working, OSCA non operational. Comes with complete service manual."
