Sub Focus - In The Studio

Nick Douwma, better known as Sub Focus, has been creating drum ‘n’ bass tracks since the early ‘00s and is synonymous with the genre.
In 2005, he scored a number one single in the UK dance chart with 'X-Ray' and since then has been producing across multiple genres, while also building up his hardware collection, which includes everything from vintage synths to custom modular rigs.
We caught up with Sub Focus in his north London studio to get the lowdown on how he builds his signature tracks."

1977 Multivox Pulser Dual Voice Synthesizer MX-75 SN 69107

"This is the Multivox MX-75 Dual Voice Synthesizer, also known as the Hillwood Pulser M75 Dual Voice Synthesizer.
Unlike other Multivox/Hillwood synths you never seem to see the rare MX-75 for sale.
The Hillwood Pulser was developed and built by Hillwood (aka Firstman) in Japan. These synths were then rebadged as Multivox and sold in America. This is a very early example: the Multivox name was on stickers placed over the Pulser name on the front and back; later examples had Multivox painted directly onto the case. On this one someone peeled the Multivox sticker off the back revealing the original Pulser name (the Multivox sticker on the front remains). More evidence of this being a very early model is that the information on the model/serial # plate on the back is hand-written.
This synth has some scratches on the case but other than that is all-original and in 100% working condition. It sounds amazing."

Korg SIGMA KP-30 Vintage Analog Synthesizer SN 0167

"There were only 1,000 of these made in 1979, with each units having its serial number plate on the front panel. This one has a serial # 0167.
The unit appears to be working fine functionally, all the keys and knobs and switches working well as being tested. Maybe a slight scratch noise on some of the knobs when controlling, which could probably do with some adjustment/servicing if required.
Cosmetically its in very nice condition as you can see..."
