Decaying reverb

Published on Jul 31, 2018 Gecho Loopsynth

"One of the new functions added in the recent firmware update is something I call (for lack of a better name) 'Decaying reverb'.

It does not use filtering, but additional buffer - similar to echo delay line. This buffer's size slowly increases over time, by one sample every 250ms. This results in the resonance perceivably tuned up to a certain frequency (or note), which changes very slowly.

There is also a more interactive mode, which allows for tuning it using sensors and starting/stopping the ramp in both up or down directions."

CUCKOO's first OP-Z live set (Berlin 2018)

Published on Jul 31, 2018 cuckoomusic

"Teenage Engineering is coming out with the OP-Z really soon!! I've been part of the beta testing phase this year. In this gig in Berlin, I'm using a generation 2 beta unit or something.. Gen 3? So if you think I'm struggling with the keys when playing, to my defence the beta units have been pretty stiff in the buttons. This has been addressed, and now, a few generations later, I've been told that it's much much nicer to play on. Can't wait to get the final unit in my hands!!!"

Let me out of here

Published on May 21, 2018 Audio Illustrator

This is last of three Pink Floyd style compositions by James Newman.

1) Another Floydian slip
2) Broken
3) Let me out of here (this post)

"Audio illustrator James Newman and the James Newman Cinematic orchestra are pleased to present, "Let me out of here".

This is a musical journey of the the struggle between soul, mind, and body. I wanted to create the mood of being trapped within oneself and the desire to be released.

The percussive 'knocking' sound represents knocking or pounding, wanting to get out of where you are and hoping someone will hear you to let you out.

This is based from the Biblical text, Romans 7:14-25.

14For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. 15For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. 16But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. 17So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 18For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. "21I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, 23but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. 24Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? 25Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin."

Synth Lines - Taylor Swift - "Dancing With Our Hands Tied"

Published on Jul 31, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Brilliant song. Possibly the best on the album. Great synth part. Synth on the album is a Prophet, not an Obi. Taylor phoned Dave to ask for a Prophet for the album/upcoming tours, but wanted white. Of course, the Prophet isn't white - but if Taylor wants a white one for the tour, Taylor gets a white one for the tour!

So - if you see her on tour sitting at a white synth, it's a custom DSI Prophet.

On this recording I dropped in the basic drum parts. What you're hearing here is just an old Boss thing that was at hand. Drums on the original are Tempest. The album is pretty much all Tempest & Vermona when it comes to percussion.

Studio version is sequenced rather than played - but it's good fun to play the parts also. Filter sweeps etc can't be performed when the hands are busy playing - but again, it's good practice to be able to play sequencer parts in the off-chance the sequencer kicks the bucket mid-gig!

The difficult part in playing along with a drum machine is every single note has to be exactly on the beat. Pianists - if you think your timing is good - import a recording and line it up with a sequencer. The first time you do it will be an eye-opener!

Many musicians aim to play the most difficult music - which is commendable, of course. But in most studio situations, what is required is someone who can simply play in time. Guitarists in particular are notoriously bad for this - they'll shred Vai all day, but can't strum a G to a D perfectly in time with a metronome :)

Harmonically the included is quite jazzy - chords are minor 9ths, minor add 9's, and add 9's. Also - the single F otave at the chorus isn't always played as only n octave on the original. Depending on which chorus, the upper Eb of the Cm9 is moved to the F, hence it may sound thicker in certain places on the original.

Best
Kris"
