Roland W-30 and HxC SD Floppy Drive Emulator

YouTube Uploaded by JimAtwood on May 24, 2011

Note this works with other synths. See:
Korg DSS-1 Gets A Floppy Upgrade
Emu Emulator II digital / analog sampling synthesizer & SD Upgrade Kit

"This video basically shows you how I attached the HxC SD Floppy Drive Emulator to my Roland W-30 Sampler out the back. I did this for testing purposes and because to completely remove the floppy drive in the W-30 requires some time and work and all I wanted to do initially was to see if the HxC would actually work with the W-30.

Thus you will see that the floppy ribbon cable and power connector of the Roland W-30 can be slipped through the back of the W-30 between the top and bottom halves of the body. I put the W-30 OS version 1.07 on the SD Card and you will see that it boots the Roland W-30 no problem at all. You can then load other floppy images that you have saved to an SD card.

Note that I have also tested the HxC Floppy Drive Emulator with the Roland S-330 and it works great with that too.

I used SMFW30 to create my System and Floppy Images. Reading the manual will help you with how what settings to use and how to get the images onto the HxC Floppy Drive Emulator. The Roland S-330 and W-30 do require different setups.

If you have any questions you can visit my blog here for more info:

Yamaha QX-1 midi data sequencer HxC function demo

Published on Jul 22, 2013 TheSynthFreq·199 videos

"Hi everyone! Here is a new video of an amazing device (HxC) used to take the place of the 5 1/4 floppy disk drive of the Yamaha QX-1 sequencer. The Yamaha QX-1 sequencer is about 16lbs, steel construction, full keyboard data entry controls (that make all those lovely vintage key sounds we all love to hear!) , 8 midi outputs, one midi in and one midi thru. Did I mention you can travel back to the 80s with this thing?? hehehe its in the secret menus. :)

Contents: QX-1 FDD construction and design, Common age related problems with the FDD HxC power up and demo of loading procedure (moving through songs) HxC and QX-1 internal interface connections and hardware view

Please enjoy :)
Important:
I'd like to personally thank Dav.R.Bailey for the awesome and wonderful HxC unit and Jim Atwood for his video on the QX-1 and HxC demonstration and technical support with Dav.R.Bailey. Thanks so much to you both for the much appreciated assistance in bringing QX-1 back to life. The install was a success. :)"

Emu Emulator II SN 1338 with in built HxC drive & Save Ferris Sticker

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

The "Save Ferris" sticker is a reference to Ferris Beuller's Day Off of course. Click through for the famous scene with it. The sticker appears to have been added since March of 2014.

via the listing: "For sale is this fantastic Emulator II classic 8-bit sampler, upgraded to an inbuilt HxC drive in addition to the 5-inch floppy. It comes complete with a full library of hundreds of disks in HxC format (the entire Emulator factory library plus both volumes of the stunning OMI Universe of Sounds collection, plus some oddities).

OVERVIEW
The Emulator is for many people THE defining keyboard of the 80s. It made its way onto countless chart hits and helped to nail the sound of a generation. The combination of 8-bit samples and clever, companding 12-bit convertors gave it a weight and authority that still seats the sounds instantly in a mix. For strings and orchestral sounds there’s a definite larger-than-life quality, while synths and basses benefit from the sheer heft of the machine’s low-end. It’s a dream to play and listen to :-)

This unit has been overhauled and repaired and is in generally excellent working order. It’s been upgraded with the hugely useful HxC mod, in a proper 5.25” housing (rather than a clunky stuck-on-the-front-panel job like some I’ve seen on eBay recently!) which holds hundreds of disk images on an SD card. The EII comes with a huge library of hundreds of sounds (actually, I think it’s well over a thousand), all of which load up sweetly without the risk of damaged or erased disks. This is a treasure trove of classic patches which have graced an awful lot of hits – you can play “spot the Top Ten song” with many of them.

IN USE
Operationally the EII is in perfect working order with one small caveat: some of the pushbuttons sometimes need a couple of presses to get them to trigger. The most affected is the Sample button, which clearly got a lot of use back in the day; sometimes I have to press it two or three times to get it to engage. Most of the day-to-day buttons, like the numerical keypad and the Disk button – both of which you use regularly to load patches – are fine though, so it’s only if you’re doing your own sampling that you’re likely to notice this; and then it’s a minor annoyance rather than a serious fault. I’ve done plenty of sampling with the keyboard and it’s never really been an issue. The sliders, the backlight, the pots etc are all fine (and have indeed been cleaned and serviced – see “Service History” below).

Sampling, incidentally, works brilliantly and sounds fantastic. You can of course use the EII as a library machine, but if you roll your sleeves up the sampling is (a) really easy to do, (b) brilliant sounding and (c) really good fun. Just stick a mic in the back and you’re good to go!

All eight voice cards are working perfectly, the 5.25” floppy drive is clean and functions (so you can access any files on actual floppies and easily transfer them to the HxC drive for archiving and future-proofing), the output is clean; basically everything is great :-)"

E-mu Emax SE HD, Early Digital/Analog Sampler, 12-bit, SSM filters w/ HxC. SCSI SN 189-0887

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"E-mu Emax SE HD (latest model w/ SCSI) sampler/synthesizer. It is in good shape both physically and mechanically. It has a HxC floppy drive emulator installed that allows you to save/load floppy disk images off of a USB drive. I will include a USB drive with 90 factory E-mu disk images that you can load into the Emax. The old, heavy 20MB SCSI hard disk was removed as it stopped working long ago (HxC is the much better option anyways)."

E-MU Systems Emax I Rack Model 1020 w/ OLED Display + HXC Drive SN 10000487

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"E-MU Systems Emax I Rack Model 1020 w/ new OLED screen and Lotharek HXC SD (SD floppy emulator drive). This EMAX is in great condition and works great.

The only issue is you need to boot the HXC drive first (than power off the unit) then power on again for full operation. The previous owner installed the upgrades so I'm not sure if something is a miss on the installation. Never bothered me enough to fix, works perfect otherwise."

Some pics pre-upgrade posted in 2013 here.

E-mu Emax 1 SE with HXC SD Drive

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Emax is the 'next-generation' Emulator II. It uses 12bit sample handling and an SSM 2047 based, resonant analog filter. Sounds very similar (if not the same) to a SP-1200, and of course Emulators (even includes the original factory SP-1200 drum kit samples). Has the SE synthesis engine.
Only two owners (including myself), shipped from the US. Great working condition. The action of one key is slightly off, backlight needs replacing and a small patch of laminate has worn off on the upper right hand side of the unit (all pictured below). These problems can be fixed fairly easily.
Includes SD card loaded with many of the original floppy libraries (choirs, orchestra, rock sounds, african and indian percussion, Oberheim OBx, orchestra hits, various synths, sound effects, strings etc.). The HXC upgrade allows you to load patch banks and libraries from your computer, via SD. It's possible to load converted Emulator libraries (using the free EMXP software) or ones downloaded from the net. Also comes with SD card reader.
Can install original floppy disk in place of HXC if required (comes with original floppy disk either way). It is possible to run both drives in parallel with dual ribbon cables.
Operates on 240v or 120v. The version of motherboard is compatible with the SCSI upgrade, with no soldering, trace cutting etc."

Emu Emax SE Rack with HxC, New Backlight & Penguin Warning!

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"If you are familiar with the Emu SP-1200 and looking for a similar sound with even more flexibility, look no further. Emax 1 SE with the HxC Floppy Emulator installed. I've never seen an Emax rack with HxC offered on eBay, so this is likely a rare occasion. Get it before someone else does! It also has a super bright backlight that was recently installed. The face of the unit is in excellent shape with all original buttons and sliders and everything works as it should. No sticky buttons or bad outputs. There is some rack rash on the top of the unit, but when racked this thing looks great. This unit is most known for its analog filters and close resemblance to the sound of the SP1200. I'm also including a library 42 professionally sampled virtual floppies. The list of this library is shown in the pics. These are all in the 8GB SD card that's included in the auction..."

E-MU Emulator II with HXC Floppy Emulator

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"5.25 floppy has been replaced with an hxc floppy drive emulator. This is an original emulator ii that has been upgraded to a plus model as indicated by the several roms on the inside. The plus model was capable of splits and had more memory than the original eii. I will include a cdrom disc that has some hxc software and readme files on it. The software is also backed up on the 2gb sd card that is included. The card has blank disk images that will boot the emu and can be saved onto. These can be created from scratch on most computers with the available software. This item does work. When the drive was replaced the wiring harnesses were worked on a little bit and the power supply was adjusted. It runs pretty well now. The buttons were a little sluggish at first, but have largely come back after being used for a little while. This is common on electronics that have sat for a long time. The more it is used the better they will get. All buttons respond double trigger or don't trigger on the first time occasionally. The sliders are in good shape and feel pretty smooth. The caps on the slide pots are reproductions. I'm including the emu dust cover in the last picture. The fit is pretty good, not perfect. It's a fairly good fit for such an odd shape keyboard..."

Emu Emulator II Synthesizer / Sampler with HXC

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Emu Emulator II in really nice condition with HXC floppy emulator SD card installed containing Emu Systems, OMI & Burmer libraries among others. You can also sample and save to SD card as well as copy additional sounds / disk images to SD card. The power can be set to 240V or 115V

The sampler is in great shape for it's age and has memory expanded to maximum as well as having the power supply rebuilt and a general service including new LCD backlight. There is an area near the attack slider where the clear coat has worn off (pictured) there are no other notable marks or damage and a reproduction label will be included should the buyer wish to install it. I was happy with the condition of the label as it is. Please note that the HXC is clear and easy to read but hasn't shown up well in the photos."

Ensoniq Mirage with Hxc Floppy Emulator and Huge Library

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Classic 80's sampler retro fitted with HxC floppy emulator with pretty much all the factory discs plus another 50 odd user discs on a micro sd card, must be well over a hundred in total, this makes this sampler very usable as creating your own samples can be a pain with the mirage os. Still has its original functioning floppy drive and about 30 disks some work some don't, but their all pretty much duplicated on the sd card. Sounds great never mind the fact that its only 8 bit, most of the factory sounds are taken straight from converted Fairlight CMI samples and sound great, if your in an 80's covers band this is the one to have.

I have just checked through the SD card and there are 89 discs worth of sounds, half of which are factory the other half are user made that include mad sound effects vintage synths and one titled Moog strings which has to be one of the nicest string patches I've heard, also please bear in mind that the floppy emulator included in this sale would cost almost a hundred quid inc post then you have to set it up and this one will arrive up and running."

"It has both original floppy and Lotharek HxC drives installed. Additionally will ship with BOTH an extensive 100+ disk library with many E-Mu original sounds, plus a huge variety of orchestral sounds of unknown origin, but all high quality (please do not ask for itemization), as well as 3.5 GB of additional sounds on SD, with many instantly recognizable/ highly coveted 1980’s sounds. Additionally, has been recently serviced (late 2018), everything is in great shape except for a missing backlight - but the display is still extremely readable even in low light (see pics #2-3)."
