Driscol & Serge - Filter & TKB experiments
Published on Aug 11, 2013 DJjondent·213 videos
"I'm just experimenting with the Driscol filter.
There is no Driscol VCO used for sound in this video.
Driscol oscillator 3 supplies the clock pulse only for the TKB.
Some very organic sounds from the Driscol.
..... "wooden to liquid" at times.
The driscol filter resonates in an acoustic way when pinged.
.... basically feeding a pulse into the trigger.
Thanks to Andrew F of Nonlinear Circuits for restoring the TKB

Driscoll Synthesizer - Test 5
Driscoll synthesizer # 5 - unedited

"I'm clocking the five 32 stage sequencers with the one VCO from the
white synth on the right (It's an old kit MFOS synth "music from outer space")
so that they are all in sync.
They are triggering 3 envelope generators (top left of upper most panel)
which are in turn opening and closing 3 VCAs (right, middle panel)."

Driscol modular 4 - Liquid sounds
Published on Apr 9, 2013
"The 32 stage sequencer is triggering the "dslope" module (envelope Generator).
Its all clocked with an LFO square wave (the synth to the right).. producing the boom sound.
The sound of dripping water. .....very organic.
Many thanks to Warren Burt for these synths. They are part of a larger mainly Serge modular collection put together in the late 1970's & early 80's

It's very good for triggering drums.
This is not your average analog sequencer. I'm feeding it a LFO square wave that provides the clock.
These panels are currently being restored."

Driscoll Analog Synthesizer - Test 2
Published on Apr 4, 2013
"Exploring the Driscoll Modular.
This was built in Australia in the late 70's , early 80's (I think)
by Julian Driscoll.
Very similar to the early Serge though not a clone.
These Driscoll panels were comissioned & used by Warren Burt.
http://www.warrenburt.com/
They were a small part of his collection
of early Serge / Driscoll synths that are currently being restored (12 panels in total)
much of which he built himself.
This is second test videos for my techos who will be restoring this bit of synth history.
It's wonderful to hear these old Driscolls (and the odd Serge). They have been silent for too long.
Many thanks to Warren for this opportunity to hear & use his synths."

Driscoll Modular Analog Synthesizer

"Driscoll modules are largely based on Serge designs although there are some significant differences! These were produced in 1979...

VCO 1
Dual VCA
VCF 1
VCF 1

Dual Mixer
Panel 2 (CV)

Dual Mixer
VC 4 channel stereo mixer/panner

VC 4 channel stereo mixer/panner

Unlike Serge systems, each module has it's own panel so you can rearrange the system at will. Each front panel is actually a single sided PCB with front panel graphics silkscreened on one side, and traces on the other. Circuit boards are mounted in card slots that are soldered to the rear of the front panel. All panel mount components are soldered to the panel which mean no flying wires to the panel, very clean and lightweight design. Almost all the IC's on the boards are socketed so repairs are much faster and easier."

Driscoll modular demo - Similar to serge DUSG, NTO & ASR
YouTube Uploaded by AntiEquation on Jun 1, 2011
"Quick demo for an Internet sale. Dual ASR, 4 Slope Gens in DUSG config, 2 NTO style oscillators with Sync and PWM! I prefer the Driscoll Oscs to NTOs although they are less stable. The Dual Processor was not used.
No post or effects other than cuts. Probably a bit quiet as I forgot to normalize the recording."

Serge Driscoll Modular Synthesizer

"It contains a Driscoll Dual VCA, Driscoll Triple comparator, a Serge 5 stage sequencer, 4 stage sequencer, and Quantizer. All modules are fitted with banana jacks that, unlike the standard emerson/johnson jacks, have a lot of the conductor exposed on the surface so you can make (play) connections just by touching cables to the exterior of the jack! All electronics are in good working condition and ready to be patched!"

Raymond Scott - Lightworks
YouTube via johnnysmooth.
"okay, a couple months ago I got this Raymond Scott compilation. Scott is pretty much the inventor of electronic music. He did a lot of music for commercial and cartoons but also he did stuff like this. I don't know if I would necessarily recommend this compilation. There are some real nice bits, but they are few. meh...and that's my review.
The visuals are from 'Treasure Island,' one of my favorite books, although I had never seen this version. I got it because I have this book, 'The Hollywood Book of Death' and this kid in the film is in it. Bobby Driscoll who when he got older got into drugs (heroine) and he ended up dying (or is it dieing) pretty young."

Driscoll Modular
Update: Some comments with additional info from Ken below. Click on comments at the end of this post.
Wow. Josue Arias sent this to me. You can put this on the list of the rarest of the rare. I'm not one to benchmark rarity against, but I've never seen or even heard of one of these before. The only thing that comes up on Google is this site with a brief reference of the Driscoll. The Analog Heaven archives come up dry as well.
Josue refers to the Driscoll as a Driscoll/Serge modular. He states, "the 'serge' part is just because the similar modules in it (Slope generators, Random voltages, cv processors, Analog shift register,...) and because my system even have a serge 5 stage sequencing programmer!, but driscoll designed the same functions than the serge modular using another electronic aproach and design, so is not a clone(!)"
The Driscoll was built in the 70s by Australian composer/designer/engineer Julian Driscoll. Josue, believes the original Driscoll was a 10-12 panel system.
As for the sound?
"The sound for this synth is incredible, its really "organic", it sound like creatures more than electronics : ) I have it next to my 4 panel serge and I really like the driscoll sound a lot more."
http://www.cyndustries.com/bugmusic/17.mp3
"All the water drops/woodblocks/marimba/rithms, comes from the driscoll. I think it show the organic qualities. I`m ataching you a couple of photos but they are from my old studio"
Wow. Thanks for sharing this Josue.
Update:
Josue gave me the ok to post the following thread. Thanks Josue!

I`ve found some of the conversaions I had with australian composer
Warren Burt, He used the Driscoll and even it have a CD now for sale
made with it!:
"Hello Mr. Burt,
I`m Josue Arias, a musician and sound engineer from Madrid(SPAIN)
I just got the old Segemodular tape from 1983, and I`ve found you have
a nice piece there called "You want, maybe, something a little intense
diatonic?"
