Synthesizing with Moog | Lesson 6: Original Soundtrack

video upload by Moog Music

Synthesizing with Moog

"The soundtrack from the sixth episode of Synthesizing with Moog carries the lesson as we look at how to create harmonics using basic waveshapes through processes such as Frequency Modulation (FM), Amplitude Modulation (AM), and distortion effects like saturation and wavefolding.

We hope you enjoy this music created by Moog electronic musical instrument experts Max Ravitz ( / patriciaaa ) and Gunnar Haslam ( @lasynthesehumaine6932 ).

The Most Misunderstood Knob On Your Synth

video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music

"Allow me to demystify one of synthesis’ most misunderstood controls: the resonance knob. Using a variety of examples, I’ll show you how adjusting resonance can add character, while also explaining how the loss of bass as you turn it up can even substitute for a high-pass filter.

Resonance can be used for vocal-like effects by creating a fixed-frequency formant in the filter, or by controlling the filter with an ADSR envelope generator to shape percussive attacks at the front of a sound.

Then I take things further by making subtle changes to the filter’s attack envelope, revealing how a sound can 'speak' with even more personality.

This video is perfect for synth learners or anyone looking to unlock the full creative potential of resonance!"

"If you’re looking for an RA Moog–era Minimoog Model D on a budget, this is a great opportunity. The previous owner replaced all four of the original mainboards with new units from SynthRestore.co.uk; unfortunately, the original boards have been lost to time. While this does impact the instrument’s value from a collector’s standpoint, it is fully functional and performs reliably.

The exterior cabinet is in excellent condition and may have been rebuilt or replaced, along with a fresh set of knobs. Overall, it’s a fantastic player’s instrument with vintage character at a more accessible price.

Serial No. 1117"

Additional SYNTH CITY Listings

"The Moog Memorymoog Model 345A is an early-production version of Moog’s flagship six-voice, three-oscillator-per-voice analog polysynth from the early 1980s. It delivers the same massive, layered sound the Memorymoog is known for, combining classic Moog filters with extensive modulation. The 345A designation mainly reflects internal production labeling rather than a feature difference. Today, it’s regarded as one of the most powerful and collectible analog polysynths ever built. This one was just serviced by our in-house technician...

Service notes:

-Installed kenton midi retrofit kit
-Modified bottom panel and keybed frame as per instructions
-Fitted midi jacks and push button switch to reaer panel
-Recalibrated entire unit and bench tested for several hours"

MOOG Messenger Sequencer, Arppegiator, & Spectravox Feedback

video uploads by Moog Music

Playlist:

1. Messenger | Sequencer Functionality
Messenger features a deep generative sequencer with functionality inspired by Muse. With features like Note Pool paired with Note Probability, Gate probability, and the ability to store a unique sequence per-patch, Messenger’s sequencer provides an intuitive way to build up complex melodic sequences that can spin off into new permutations at the touch of a button.
2. Messenger | Arppegiator Functionality
Messenger features an extremely flexible arpeggiator with functionality inspired by the arp found in Muse. With the ability to chose both traditional or newer advanced note movement patterns, program rhythms, and the option to store a unique arp style per-patch, Messenger’s arpeggiator is a powerful tool for music composition and developing new song ideas.
3. Messenger | Spectravox Feedback
In this video we look at how to use Spectravox and Messenger together to create feedback tones verging on the edge of destruction.

Spectravox is a flexible signal processor which adds lots of sonic character to any signal we patch into it. Using a basic sound from Messenger we can add distortion and saturation using Spectravox's pre-amp section as well as deep modulated phaser tones with its ten filters. Messenger's control voltage output allows us to control parameters of Spectravox (in this case the Spectral Shift LFO rate) using Messenger's keyboard. Later, we look at tying Spectravox and Messenger together in a feedback loop - patching the headphone output of Messenger to the Program input of Spectravox, the Program output of Spectravox to its Carrier Input, and then the output of Spectravox to the External Input of Messenger. With careful balance of the EXT IN/FB control and various parameters on both Spectravox and Messenger, a whole new world of gnarly and nonlinear feedback tones opens up.

And two featuring Moog for good measure:

Playlist:

1. Short Ambient Moog Grandmother Performance (40s Demo)
A short ambient performance using the Moog Grandmother, exploring smooth analog tones, slow modulation, and spatial delay textures.

Recorded live in one take — with external effects, Zoom Ms-70 CDR, Grandmother’s raw sound shaped into a soft, floating atmosphere.

🎛️ Gear used:
• Moog Grandmother (analog synth)
• Internal spring reverb & Zoom Ms70 CDR delay
2. VoxModula Archives – The Beginning of an Archive
Hi, this is the first video of VoxModula Archives. VoxModula is an ongoing collection of sonic fragments — recordings where synthesis meets the quiet presence of the surrounding world.

Each piece is an observation of sound as a living material: unstable, imperfect, shaped by voltage and time.

The project does not aim to perform or entertain, but to document the space between intention and accident — where tone becomes memory, and noise becomes evidence of existence.

These works are presented without manipulation or spectacle, as if retrieved from an open archive of moments.

Nothing here is fixed.
Everything breathes.

Synthesizing with Moog | Lesson 6: Carrier

video upload by Moog Music

Synthesizing with Moog

"In the 1970s, composer John Chowning used early computers to experiment with extreme vibrato effects. Modulating the pitch of a sound with an LFO gives a nice vibrato, but raise the frequency of the LFO into the audio rate and all of a sudden dense new textures are created. In this episode we look at how to create harmonics using basic waveshapes through processes such as Frequency Modulation (FM), Amplitude Modulation (AM), and distortion effects like saturation and wavefolding.

Written, hosted, filmed, and produced by our team of electronic musical instrument experts, this new seven-part educational video series makes learning the fundamentals of synthesis accessible, engaging, and inspiring for anyone curious about science, music, and how the two worlds converge. We set out to create a series that brings you as much technical knowledge as it does entertainment and joy as you watch each episode!

The #1 Reason Your Basslines Don’t Hit

video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music

"Ever wonder why your basslines don’t hit the way they should? I’ve seen the same problem for decades—and in this video, I’ll show you the #1 reason it happens and exactly how to fix it.

I’ll walk you through some of the techniques I’ve used on hit records and film scores over the last 40 years—techniques you can apply on any synth to make your basslines punch harder and stand out in your tracks.

Whether you’re editing presets or creating your own sounds from scratch, I’ll show you how to craft memorable, expressive bass tones that fit the song and move people.

For a deeper understanding of these techniques and to learn about all the classic synth modules check out my method Think Like a Synth, my online course that helps you break free from presets and truly understand to create sounds that payoff in your music."

Minimoog Prototype Exhibit At the Moogseum This Weekend Only!

The anticipation is almost over! We are thrilled to be hosting the Minimoog Prototype Exhibit at the Moogseum, this weekend only, in partnership with the Museum of Music Technology (MMT). The exhibit will feature four ultra rare Minimoog prototypes from 1969, 1970, and 1971, as well as a host of related artifacts from the Bob Moog Foundation Archives.

We are honored to have JoE Silva, author of The Minimoog Book: The Synthesizer That Changed Music Forever: Sounds, Stories, and Technology join us throughout the weekend of the exhibit. He'll be on hand to delve into the history of the Minimoog with exhibit attendees and sign books in the Moogseum store.

We're excited to share a new addition to the exhibit. MMT will be bringing Minimoog serial number 1016 (the sixteenth Minimoog ever produced out of 12,269 units), which was purchased in 1971 by none other than David VanKoevering, the marketing genius behind the early Minimoog sales. David's Minimoog will be available for exhibit attendees to play and explore. Come get you hands on this incredible piece of synthesizer history!

Finally, be sure to take advantage of the morning tours with our executive director, Michelle Moog-Koussa. Michelle will be delving into Minimoog history as it is conveyed through the main gallery of the Moogseum. She doesn't give tours often, so take advantage of this opportunity. The tours are available for a small fee for any exhibit attendee.
