White Model Philips PMC 100 Synthesizer Composer SN 0033020 w/ Original Box & Manuals

"From the designer of the SFX peripherals for the Commodore 64, came this curious little box — the Personal Media Composer (PMC) 100. It's got a Yamaha two-operator FM chip, a membrane keyboard (flat, but not capacitive like the EDP Wasp) and its most striking feature, the built-in cassette deck. This allowed you to save your compositions as either sound or data, or it could function as a Walkman or dictaphone. The PMC 100 came in black or (a much rarer) white.

The main voice is monophonic, with simple preset accompaniment rhythms (with 15 options for the rhythm's voice) controlled by the 'Gling' safe-note system. This heavily limits its potential as a solo instrument, not only because the beats are laughably thin but because the accompanying voices are fixed in their patterns.

There are 100 preset melody voices, mostly the standard Yamaha PortaSound two-op noises, but there's also a surprising amount of useable sound effects and slow, evolving (but moving in very obvious digital steps) pads. It's charming in its own incredibly lo-fi way.

The real area where it shines, though, is the step sequencer. It's visualized on an LCD screen in full stave notation with rock-steady tempo, adjustable to insane degrees! Notes can be edited in or out of the sequence at will. If this thing had MIDI out it would have become a cult classic.

Sadly, though, it was a flop in terms of sales. It's not that hard to understand why; even by the mid-eighties this thing would have been considered comical and there's little hope of understanding the architecture without a manual. Still, it's a great curio to have in any synth collection and can even be useful for some styles or when buried in a mix."

Bad Gear - Philips PMC 100

video upload by AudioPilz

"Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Philips PMC 100 Composer. This 80s groovebox/workstation thing and weird combination of an FM synth and a tape deck is the only Philips instrument that I am aware of. Will it replace your Yamaha DX7?

Philip Rees Percussion Sample Player MIDI Sound Module

"Works well, has individual outputs, selectable MIDI CH plus MIDI IN & MIDI THRU."

SN 144982 or 144962

This appears to be the first post to feature the Philip Rees Percussion Sample Player. Some info via mu:zines:

"More than a beatbox, less than a sampler, the Percussion Sample Player appears to be a unique rhythmatist's instrument. Simon Trask looks at the pros and cons of a dedicated drum sampler..."

"THE PSP'S PCM samples are eight-bit companded (giving a 72dB dynamic range, equivalent to a 13-bit linear system), and sampled at 31.25kHz. The five built-in cymbal sounds have a neutral (you could say characterless) quality which allows them to blend in with the variety of percussive sounds found on the various cartridges. The longer cymbal samples both succumb to the lack-of-memory syndrome, though as always a touch of external reverb processing can help out."

"The nine cartridges available as of writing are (with number of samples indicated in brackets): Neutral Kit (7), Tight Kit (9), Analogue Drum Machine (12), Techno Kit (7), Latin Kit (10), Power Kit (8), Metal Kit (8), Snare Collection (8) and Tabla (12). Each cartridge comes in a small plastic box, with a transparent plastic lid which can be clipped securely into place and a piece of foam in the base to help prevent the cartridge from getting knocked about. Also provided in the case is a small fold-out leaflet which includes a list of the samples on the cartridge together with their MIDI trigger notes, a description of each sample, and several example rhythm patterns printed in a grid format. Additionally, each cartridge has a handy diagram printed on its upper face which tells you not only what samples the cartridge contains but also which MIDI notes trigger them."

"An exceptionally-clean example and unusually for sale complete with original stand, pedal, music stand and manual in its folder. Working very well indeed - just back from a complete service.

The condition is very good overall - there are some scuffs to finish, mostly on the edges of the woodwork, and one ding to the top left rear corner, but overall this is in exceptional and complete condition. Click on the photos to zoom in and see more shots.

Model number on the bottom is Type 13GM751 15T. it's a sold state (transistorized) unit.

Philips Philicorda GM751Demo

Published on Jun 27, 2015 noddyspuncture

"Here is Jake's Philicorda GM751 - finally up and running and working 100%. It's been a mammoth task and quite a challenge - it's been here for over a year - but I seem to have gotten there - eventually. I just need to clean and replace all the keys and cut some pieces from that silver strip and engrave them with the lettering for all the rocker switches...!"

"Approx 83cm wide x 53 cm deep x 79cm high.

Clean unit in good working order with a couple of faults (see below).

Features include great Spring Reverb and Vibrato and Chord button (which activates 17 pre-programmed chords)

Comes with foot pedal and shelve underneath organ which is connected to back legs.

Line out and other connectivity are on underside of organ although it also has it's own loudspeaker on underside.

Nice soundtrack and psychedelic organ sounds.

GM754 has been used by the likes of Portishead and Clinic.

Really enjoyed using this fantastically warm and authentic sounding organ, I just need to make room for new equipment.

Known Faults:

two of the keys take a while to return once depressed. (the 3rd e, 3rd f)

2nd b makes no sound at all.

These could be simple contact/cleaning problems but I'm not sure.

Slider cap is missing from vibrato but does not affect function. (see pics).

On the right hand side some of the veneer is peeling slightly.(see pics).

Couple of other very small blemishes but overall really good cosmetically considering age.

Owner & service manual can be found here"
