Analog Rytm Cuckoo Walkthrough #1

In this improvised walkthrough I'm taking you through the workflow of creating a couple of sounds, loading samples into a project, creating performances and scenes, and programming, live recording and jamming out a little sequence.

An alliance of music app developers called Musik App Manufaktur had a very nice performance with iOS apps here at Superbooth 16. They're clearly showing that mobile app music is not just something fun to play around with while you're waiting for the bus. No, these are highly capable of high performance stuff, also controlling modulars and syncing over Ableton link. Good stuff."

Analog Rytm - Cuckoo Epic Jam

"The Rytm is upon us, and I've had some time to learn how to operate it. Knowing another Elektron is definitely helpful. But there's a lot of stuff specific to the Rytm that you have to teach your head and fingers in order to move quickly.

In this video I'm making heavy use of Performance mode. With each pad you can map parameter changes all over the sounds and fx. They're aftertouch sensitive and it works very well. I've got one pad mapped for compression, another for reverb send, another one for delay, and two for pitch bending. The kick pad is for making the kick drum a bit boomier.

Stuff like this helps making this machine playful and fun to operate. You can still program stuff really tight, but notice how I move around in this video without spending too much time fiddling around with the knobs and stuff, and come to think of it - I didn't even touch the sequencer trig knobs. It feels great working this way!

Not all FM synths are alike. The FM4, which, according the teh internet, is an FM synth modelled after the Yamaha TX81Z. The building blocks, the variations of sines and inverted sines, sound pleasant and are useful in bringing out unique FM timbres. The waveforms are a bit rare in commercial FM synths today.
The different "models" reproduce lush and pleasant digital audio aliasing to various degerees, inspired by legacy technology.

"Testing a modular can be done in a million ways. What I've been eager to try is the FM synthesis, so in this video it's all about FM :) It's nice to have a session and actually listen to the sound quality of different gear. I found this to be very precise, and with a lot of detail in the sound - yet completely powerful in the SUB register. It's a good one.

I had the opportunity to have a talk with Edmund Eagan, the extraordinary sound designer, and really the "ears" of Haken Audio. We talked about new features of the Continuum Fingerboard engine, also touching upon what makes the Continuum feel so "real", and the importance and vurtue in practising playing an instrument to improve your skills. Also in the end I tried to film Ed's hands when he's performing, with a long lens (although a bit shaky) so that you can all see the subtle level of pressure required to play the Continuum."
