video upload by EthanJamesMusic

EthanJamesMusic Sequential Prophet 6 Tutorial Lessons

"This is a tutorial series for anyone who wants to learn how to do their own sound design using the Sequential Circuits (former Dave Smith Instruments) Prophet 6 synthesizer. The goal is to break this subject down into understandable and digestible bits of information that you can apply to your own electronic music. I am primarily a media or film composer, so we will learn ambient, techno, and EDM style sound design using the synth.

This third video shows the filters, their sounds, and some options. Please leave a comment with any questions or requests and a like if this was helpful."

Live annotated eurorack Tangerine Dream inspired cinematic synthwave, ARP-2600, Moog, OB-6

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"This is a live cinematic synthwave electronic music performance inspired by later Tangerine Dream music, where I wanted to setup a more meditative environment and create a slow musical progression by interweaving layers with the Eurorack, providing bass from the Moog Grandmother, chords from the DSI OB-6, and melody from the ARP-2600. This is an entirely live and unrehearsed improvised performance, and I included annotations to show some of what I'm thinking about and also to demonstrate the different musical themes weaving in and out of the texture Since I'm a film composer by trade, this came out relatively cinematic and would work in certain movie score settings. This is a very simple setup to make a big sound. I hope this is educational for you as well, in terms of how I put these performances together. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!"

Make Noise René 2 Tutorials

video uploads by EthanJamesMusic

"I wanted to give back to the community that has given me so much musical knowledge by creating a lesson series to help beginners just getting started with Eurorack modular synthesis. This is a tutorials series for anyone who wants to learn how to use the Make Noise Rene 2 sequencer to its fullest capabilities. I've tried to break things down into small videos that are easy to mentally digest and apply to your own electronic music. We will be exploring both east coast tonal and west coast avant-garde uses of the synthesizer."

Live annotated performance: Buchla 208c Easel Command avant-garde synthesizer electronic music

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"I am using the Buchla 208c music Easel Command along with the Make Noise 0-ctrl as a stand in for the 218 touch controller and wanted to explore how to use a patch that my 3 year old son put together. I am using annotations to try to teach some of my thought process when I'm making these improvisations. This is entirely live and unrehearsed. The goal of this piece of electronic music was to find musical ways to use the combination of the Pulsar to pitch with the Envelope Generator to Timbre in the complex oscillator. I was able to pull off his favorite sounds: Ambulance and Truck Motor. The combination of the two modulations allows me to create some interesting rhythmic concepts. This is a relatively simple patch and doesn't need many connections to get something that can sound extremely complex. I am using the west coast technique of starting with something and spinning it out like a centrifuge. I'm processing the sound through a few eurorack modules that I will detail below. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!

Patch Notes:
Buchla 208c Easel Command audio to 4ms Tapographic Delay to Make Noise X-pan controlled by Intellijel Quadrax and Tangle Quartet. Audio from Eurorack output to Boss RC-5 loop pedal and Eventide H9 reverb.
Live patching: in annotations"

Soma Lyra-8 ambient drone synthesizer Tutorial lesson 1: Overview

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"This is a tutorial series for anyone who wants to learn how to use the Soma Lyra-8 to its fullest extent. The synth is simply one of the best ambient drone synthesizers and is capable of making some wonderful, beautiful, ugly, complex textures. I've tried to break things down into small videos that are easy to mentally digest and apply to your own electronic music. We will be exploring both east coast tonal and west coast avant-garde uses of the synthesizer. This first video shows an overview of the instrument and gives you a place to start. Live annotated patching: Buchla 208c Easel Command AM focus avant-garde synthesizer electronic music

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"I am using the Buchla 208c music Easel Command along with the Make Noise 0-ctrl as a stand in for the 218 touch controller and wanted to explore how to use some of the many possibilities of AM. I am live patching and using annotations to try to teach some of my thought process when I'm making these improvisations. This is entirely live and unrehearsed. The goal of this piece of electronic music was to show how to use different ways that AM can be used to create both rhythm and the faster audio rate (classic) amplitude modulation. I used cross modulation at the end to combine both sounds. This is a great use to be able to have rhythmic variations in what can otherwise be a static 5 step sequence.

Loop singing and drumming: Soma Enner live west coast avant-garde synthesizer electronic music

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"Here is another performance video using the Soma Laboratory Enner instrument, designed by Sistor. My goal for this was to make kind of a tribal ambient sound using my voice into the piezo pickup and by layering non metered finger drumming with a looper pedal, and then morphing into a meditative bass and synth sound. This synth is very geared towards both drones and rhythms, as well as using the piezo pickup with the case, spring, and rubber bands to make added percussive sounds. I'm very excited to continue exploring and find even more sounds. I'm making use of the resonance of the case to layer in my voice and finger drums. Later I fade to a drone layer with rhythm from the click part of the synthesizer. This synth is patched using touch, and I love the idea of having an instrument that I can use my hands on to create sound and have a direct connection to the music. I am using the west coast technique of starting with something and spinning it out like a centrifuge. I'm processing the sound through an Eventide H9 pedal with some reverb and a Boss RC-5 looper pedal. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!"

ARP-2600, Moog Grandmother live cinematic Tangerine Dream inspired synthwave annotated performance

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"I wanted to do a live synthwave performance with annotations that show what I'm thinking as I create these. Almost everything on my channel is an improvisation, so I'm thinking on both music theory and technical levels at all times. This starts with static arpeggios and utilizes modal shifting to create the chord progressions. I'm using a fairly simple setup of just the Moog Grandmother and the ARP-2600, so that the text can follow the music. The arpeggios are inspired by new Tangerine Dream electronic music. Since I'm a film composer by trade, this came out relatively cinematic and would work in certain movie score settings. I hope this is educational for you as well, in terms of how I put these performances together."
