Sound is triggered by clicking to front panel or by external drum pad or external audio signal.
Anodized aluminium housing, CNC engraved labeling, darkened (stained) lacquered oak wood sides with wood natural pattern.
Built like a tank :)

Oscillator no.1 - tune + on/off/noise switch
Oscillator no.2 - tune + on/off/slow (can be used as LFO) switch
Filter section (24dB/oct VCF) with tune / modulation (by osc2) / sweep / resonance / decay. Filter is self-resonating at max setting (see part two).
Amplifier section with decay and volume knobs.
Input gain (sensitivity) knob and trigger input connector added against original Synare 3.

Built by me, based on the schematic from service manual with some changes (and improvements).

Clone tech info:
Battery saver circuit is omitted, powered by wall adaptor only, no batteries.
CA3080 OTAs used in orginal are replaced by newer LM13700 with same (or slightly better) performance.
Quality components are used, metalized resistors, polypropylen WIMA and tantal capacitors in signal path (elyts in power source of course), smooth potentiometers, rubbered (softened) buttons.

Great for sampling or live performance or you can use it with analog sequencer/synth
You can connect external drum pad into Trig In connector for live drumming.
Or connect individual output from your drum machine to Synare´s Trig in and "replace" internal sound by Synare´s pure analog sound.
Connectors jack 1/4" (6,3mm): Trig IN, OUT.


Powered by DC 12V wall adaptor (positive center) - protected from wrong polarity.

I once saw an auction on here for one of these units that was new in the box (that one sold for over $300, btw), and the manual in that box contained instructions for how to perform that mod. via the listing: "About a year ago the noise section went out on it, so I sent it to Switched-On Music Electronics in Austin, TX for repairs. While it was in I decided to have it modded with trigger inputs to bypass the pads, so it could be sequenced with an analog sequencer, or by a modular synth. The tech doing the mods also talked me into modding the noise section with a pot that lowers the bit rate of the noise (think NES video game explosions at low rates). The repairs and mods cost $400, so think of that as something you shouldn't have to do anytime soon if you decide to buy this.

Another notable thing about this unit is the amazing condition of the pads. I've never seen one with pads in this good of condition and is one of the main reason I originally picked this up. The pads work great, although some areas on the outside of the pads take a slightly harder hit to respond. That's another good reason for the trigger input mods.

For anyone who hasn't heard one of these, the closest things I can think of that it sounds like is an ARP Odyssey, or an MS-20. Everything is more geared for percussion though, so think weird metallic pings, and massive pink and white noise gongs. The pads can be tuned so that each of the 4 pads have 3 sections and therefor 12 notes. Not particularly easy to play melodic things that way but it might help you come up with things you wouldn't normally play on a regular synth with keys. I find it more useful for percussive clangs and booms. Sounds amazing when mixed and triggered with another analog drum machine like a Korg Rhythm 55."

In addition to the Synare 3 sounds the S3X includes several key features. The first and most important is the use of an external power supply, so no batteries needed. The unit works with a 12v or 18v 1/8" plug wall adapter and finding one is easy (I can help you locate one if needed). The second feature is a set of presets that allow you to quickly switch to 5 preconfigured sounds (adjustable) with a turn of a knob.

"The knob caps are not all original, but all work perfectly. It seems someone thought to add CV jacks to the drum, as you can see in the 3rd picture, but those colorful jacks are not wired to anything internally. The internal components of the Synare 3 are completely original and unmodified."

"This has to be absolutely one-of-a-kind: A 1980's vintage Synare S3X Drum Synthesizer, modified to accept input from an external audio source. The trouble is, it doesn't work...

If you're not familiar with the S3X, it's pretty cool, when it works. It's an upgrade of the orginal, somewhat legendary Synare 3 (PS 3), a dual-oscillator analog synthesizer that's triggered by drum hits. Knobs on the side provide easy tweaking and routing of the oscillators, the filter, and the VCA. There's lot's of information available from the Google on the Synare S3X and some nice demos to be found on YouTube. The big improvements of the S3X over the PS3 are fourfold:

The S3X uses an external AC adapter instead of two internal 9-volt batteries.
There's an external voltage out so multiple drums can be chained together and powered by one AC adapter
The S3X has 5 adjustable presets.
The S3X can be triggered by a Synare Sequencer, which was sort of an early proto-midi type controller box.

On top of all that, the S3X being auctioned here has an additional input labeled "EXT MIC" and a switch to toggle between "PAD" and "MIC". It's a pretty ingenious mod, actually, insofar as the Synares use a small speaker under the drum pad to supply an audio source to the synth controls..."

"The Synare was the most popular stand-alone drum synth during the 70's and 80's. Every pop music cover band had one, mostly for the classic pee-oooh disco laser sound. However the Synare can get much crazier. It is a two oscillator monosynth with a nice filter, white noise, and two fast envelopes. One oscillator can FM the self-oscillating filter for great metallic sounds. The fast envelopes with filtered noise make for awesome blasting snares (Gary Numan used that sound to nice effect). The Synare 3 can even approximate an 808 cowbell by de-tuning the two oscillators. Endless fun."
