Mode Machines EDP Wasp Filter Clone of a Clone?

via Clacktronics

"A while back I was in discussion with Michael from Mode Machines about allowing him to use my alteration on the wasp filter as a part of his series of boxes. Partly because I was still living off them and because I couldn’t quite see it as a manufactured product I did not go ahead with it. Well I sold him one and through NAMM 2013 it turns out he just cloned it, oh well, it kind of has a better layout. Doesn’t matter now as I no longer make them and I have a full-time job. If you would like a wasp drive please visit Mode Machines, it kind of feels good to be copied!"

Does it matter?

Clacktronics Update

via Clacktronics"There has been a bit of silence recently, this is because I have a new job! assisting in the design and installation of electronic works for the artist Haroon Mirza. But Clacktronics is still going, soon there should be a new pedal release and I have been getting into Arduino so expect some exciting new things and posts soon, including updates to the Analogue Drum Lab.

As part of this post I have just published a new article on using press’n'peel to make PCB’s at home. This can be found here"

Wasp Drive filter and SH101

YouTube Uploaded by clackbeetle on Oct 4, 2011

"A demonstration using a SH101 through a Wasp Drive. The SH101's filter is completely open and there is no resonance. So all the filter effects you hear are via the WD filter. The 101 is also sending a CV to the Wasp Drives Cutoff, that is why the resonance changes when different keys are hit. It is not a tuned resonance so it cant really be played tunefully but it has a good effect when playing. The CV is connected with a standard 3.5mm patch cable, much like the ones eurorack synthesizers use."

"The Wasp Drive is a distortion / filter device. It uses the same VCF model as from the EDP wasp but adding tweaks and modifications to really bring out the noise!! Built into a robust folded aluminum case, with large chunky layout , an intuitive layout, LED rate indicator and rubber feet, it is an excellent choice for live performance as well as experimentation in the studio. A diverse filter capable of adding grit and punch to drums, ambient sweeps, filter wobble and plain crazy noise.

Clacktronics Analogue Drum Lab

Analogue Drum Lab

"The purpose of these pages are to study and archive different commercial and DIY project drum synthesizers that use analogue circuitry to model drum and percussive sounds. The focus is more on the way the sound is synthesized rather than drum machine control. Rather than just pop up a load of badly scanned schematics and images I hope to analyze and re-draw each design ( or group of similar designs. ) and make mod suggestions and PCB’s."

Clacktronics Wasp Drive - Synthesizer Filter in a Box

via this auction
"Protect your ears!! The Wasp Drive is a unique distortion / filter / auto-wah device and the name is no coincidence; It uses the same VCF model as from the legendary EDP wasp but adding tweaks and modifications to really bring out the noise!! Built into a robust folded aluminum case, with large chunky layout , an intuitive layout, LED rate indicator and rubber feet, it is an excellent choice for live performance as well as experimentation in the studio.

Controls:

Cutoff - Adjusts the cutoff point of the filter
'Q' - This is resonance, at max it self oscillates
Response - Has Low Pass, Band Pass or High Pass option
LFO speed - speed of the cutoff modulating LFO
LFO Depth - depth at which the LFO modulates the cutoff
Gain - capable of driving the input up-to 10x

A diverse filter capable of adding grit and punch to drums, ambient sweeps, mellow wah and plain crazy noise.

Customer Quotes

"When it's fed a signal from my korg M500 or Yamaha cs01 it makes the filter sweeps sound incredibly waspy - especially with the resonance up high. I'm using it live with my band in conjunction with a Copilotfx Molecule (a tremolo pedal where the rate of modulation depends on the frequencies present at the input). The ability to drive the input is fantastic and I've found that this alone can give quite a unique sounding distortion. It sounds great with my Casio SK-8 as well, playing the 'organ' preset driven very hard into the pedal, and using the bandpass with high resonance and lfo modulation has produced some incredible rhythmic textures." - Chris le Monde of CLOUT!

To keep the price down and because it uses a standard tip negative 9v input that guitar pedals use (such as Boss, Ibanez, EHX etc ) it does not come with its own power supply. But they are available at a discounted extra cost of £6 for a UK power adapter and £10 for USA, Australia and EU power adapter.

More Images and sound samples to follow, limited run so grab one now!!!
