The Brooklyn Synth & Pedal Expo announces its return on October 18th and 19th, transforming the stylish 6,000-square-foot warehouse at 100 Sutton in Greenpoint into an immersive playground for electronic music creators. Once again presented in partnership with the legendary Three Wave Music, the Expo offers a unique, strictly in-the-headphones experience for attendees to interactively demo the latest synthesizers, effects pedals, and modular gear in a noise-friendly environment.
Nestled in one of Brooklyn's most vibrant musical corridors, the show is expected to draw over 1,500 musicians, producers, and gear enthusiasts. The 2024 Expo expands its programming to include educational workshops alongside its large exhibition floor.
Built for Discovery This is an event built for discovery, and the headphone format creates a respectful space where you can truly hear the nuances of a boutique pedal or get lost in a massive modular patch without the noise of a typical convention. It's a focused, community-driven experience.
"We check out the new modules from West-Virginia-based Kanawha Music and Art. Long Division 2 is a classic polyphonic divide-down voice reminiscent of the electronic organs and string machines of the 1960s and 1970s. The Filternator is a filter module based on the resonators found in 1940s Hammond organs.

Filternator
"Is it a filter? Is it a resonator? Is it a filter bank? Yes- the new Filternator module is all of the above…with a difference. When developing the module and hearing how it treated signals, it was obviously filtering, but with high resonant peaks that were stronger than the incoming signal, at which point it was resonating up a storm. So what to call it? It’s resonating as much as it’s filtering, so we called it the Filternator!
It’s simplicity itself to use: plug your audio in the input, and the output goes to whatever you like down your signal chain. Use the wet/dry mix knob to control the amount of “filternated” signal you’d like to hear. Then comes the fun part: chose a mode, and start messing around with the switches. There’s a choice of three switches for the capacitors, and three switches for the coils used in the circuit. They can be used in any combination to set the filter frequencies and resonant peaks. If you like, automate the mix control with an external CV source.
The one thing you don’t do is power it up…except for the external control voltage for the wet/dry mix, it’s completely passive! But unlike other passive filters, this design doesn’t drag down your signal level with resistors in the circuit, because there aren’t any. By using inductors instead, the signal doesn’t get attenuated as it does in a standard passive filter. Instead, it will actually boost signal levels as it nears the resonance peak.
Talk about skiff friendly, not only does it not take any power, but it’s nice and slim, just 12mm deep behind the (nice and thick aluminum) faceplate."

Introducing Long Division version II...in addition to the unlimited polyphony, we now have a choice of square or pulse waves, a Gate Out, illumination for the tuning trimmers, and more.

"Kanawha music build pipe organs but the market ain't what it used to be (apparently) so now they are turning their attention to poly Eurorack modules. Using divide down technology from transistor organs. Its called the Long Division Tone Module
This means they have complete polyphony., if you want a regular pure organ sound then this is the module for you.
they also have a module called 48 gates that will give you 48 separate gate outputs for triggering solenoids, or drum triggers or whatnot.
Yeah its niche, but its interesting.

Xenakis- Evryali (excerpt)
This is a MIDI file from the internet played back on the Long Division tone module in Piano mode. This demonstrates how the module can deal with large clumps of notes- since there's no limit on the number of notes in can play at once no notes drop out. (They DO drop out at some points because the score goes beyond the 61 notes of an organ/synth keyboard- the original music was written for piano.) The sound from the module was sent straight into the camera with to processing or effects.

Here we have the Long Division module busting a move with some Hammond-ish sounds and piano tones. The sound from the module is going straight in to the camera with no processing of any kind.

48 GATES- it’s nothing but a big bunch of outputs, 48 of ’em, ready to activate anything you like, with standard heavy duty 12V outputs, logic level 5V available as a no cost option.
So…what do you with this thing? Here are a few ideas:
Run a looped 48 note chromatic sequence, and have 48 individual time slots for drum machines or other pattern making sounds. Don’t like the timing on one position? Move it over one for slight timing adjustments.
Make some LED plugs and create a fantastic dot matrix display which an easily be read across a room.
Activate solenoids, relays, small motors, whatever you like, and “play” them from any MIDI source.
