"Digital oscillators, but otherwise analog, and it sounds it. Many opportunities for all manner of 70's and '80s synth tones, from popsong horn-string imitations to experimental-electronica overkill. Overall sound is admittely more 80s polysynth than 70s monosynth, that is, more Roland JX than Minimoog. Not very convincing acoustic sounds though, except for things like pipe organs. Capable of DX7-like tones."

ENSONIQ ESQ-1 Keyboard

"It is interesting to realize that the roots of the whole Ensoniq range of products lie in the humble SID chip by MOS. Here we have the legendary ESQ-1 keyboard, the first of many instruments to use this core technology. Sure it is a complete instrument with polyphonic keyboard & sequencer; however each voice has the same fundamental structure as the original SID element, enhanced in some ways and using SSM & Curtis chips. The use of stepped, wave memory in lieu of the more conventional additive synthesis is the real stroke of genius that gives Ensoniq, its powerful, realistic and bitsy sound like no other; like a bunch of Sid Stations on steroids… Even when the concept was foolishly shelved by new owners Creative, another company stepped into the breach and thankfully introduced the aptly named Evolver."

"Top: VCO, VCF, Triple EG, VCA. Bottom: Peak Selector, Sequencer. Not shown: Frequency Divider (Nyle still has it). At the very bottom is a Frac Rack with some utility modules I put together; Blacet Bar Graph, 2 mini O'sopes, A440 tuner, and a Yusynth Voltage Standards module (thanks Yves, yusynth.net).

The good news is it all works! The Sequencer, Frequency Divider (THANK YOU Nyle), VCO, VCA, VCF, EG; it's a real system that now needs expanding!.."
