My Man w/ Red Steam makes Quantum Relabi

YouTube Published on Mar 21, 2012 by petermopar

Let me explain. The new Laboratory Roolz-Gewei will have an added bonusius, namely a vintage ciat-lonbarde module-idea called "The Man with The Red Steam". OK, let me say also that "The Man w/ Resteam" appeared in several songs by the gongs, a band from Oberlin. The idea of steam, of course relates to both urban city streets, and the idea of "noise". As a drum machine, this nexus-name can offer us two facets:
-noise, shaped with an envelope as our hi-hat
-dust, an idea by Paul McCarthey in Supercollider 2, which is a special way of viewing noise as incidents.

The noise is created directly from transistors, reverse biased in classic noisy zener noise. This is in fact "quantum" noise due to the stochastically random nature of electrons jumping potential wells. Incidentally the core concept is patented as a "steam simulator for model railroads" here:
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/3913097.pdf

We have added one nice twist- instead of using single transistor (quite coarse) amplifier blocks, we have converted this idea to using balanced transistor pairs, in the differential pair model. Thus there are two noisy junctions, proceeded by a balanced amplifier (rejecting common mode spurious anti-noises), and so on. For convenience, this is termed "Tektronix-Style", named for the early engineers there who pioneered the use of balanced stages.

In this video, the output of the dust generator is pulse-modulating a roll (simple transistor multi-vibrator), so you see hear, "quantum relabi"

Of course a definition of relabi can be had on John Berndt's website:
http://www.johnberndt.org/relabi/

John uses the chaos-lever modality of relabi, which is more related to the Sidrazzi organ, being a circle of oscillators that modulate each other. This seen-here "quantum-lever" may differ on a psychological level. I don't know? Do you?

The placement and stance of this module in the Laboratory Roolz-Gewei Modular Synthesizer is similar to that of the "Source of Uncertainty" in the Buchla.

In this video, I am also dancing with my feet to the beat of the uncertainty.

"The Gongs" use "The man with the red steam", which was one of the first synths i ever made, a drum synth!:"

The Gongs were an avant garde folk act in the early 20th century who released this single album on Momus's American Patchwork label. All the instruments they play are hand-made by Peter Blasser, who now plays in the group Skeletons and the Girl-Faced Boys.

KSR Workshop and Studio Featuring The Dark Knight & Inception Modular

Click through for the full set and be sure to see them full size. These are some incredible photos. via Neil Fellowes Geigertek on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge. Neil won week #26 of the I Dream of Wires Modular of the Week contest.

"I received an invite from world-renowned synthesizer technician and restorer, Kent Spong [posted here], to visit his workshop and studio as part of my Synth Studio Photo Project. I duly accepted naturally. The highlight of the visit was to meet and photograph the Moog/PPG modular synthesiser system, owned by Mel Wesson, that was used to on such block-buster movies as 'The Dark Knight' and 'Inception'. I also had access to Kent's celebrated modified Yamaha CS-80 synthesizer, dubbed the 'KSR80', which it's re-imagined facia and modified circuitry that gives it even more expression and sonic capabilities than it's original set up. It was a delight to meet Kent, a very unassuming man, who is something of a living legend in the music business with clients who top the A-list including film-score composer Hans Zimmer. he's also known as 'Mr. CS80' because of his specilalist expertise with that particular synthesizer. Please do enjoy my take on the KSR Workshop and Studio."
