Moog Music Polarizes its Synthesizers, Releases All White Instruments

"ASHEVILLE, NC – November 14, 2012 – Today Moog Music announced the limited edition release of an all white series of its classic analog instruments. Moog has polarized the color of their traditionally black steel and natural wood instruments to a solid white finish. Included in this limited edition white release are the Slim Phatty, Minimoog Voyager, and the Minimoog Voyager XL analog synthesizers. Moog has also included the entire line of Moogerfooger Analog Effects Modules in this all white release.

In addition to the polarized color, the Slim Phatty now ships with 100 new, artist-designed presets made specifically for this limited edition analog synth. The sound designers that crafted the new preset bank are Phil Hartnoll and Paul Hartnoll of Orbital, Production wiz Chad Hugo of N.E.R.D. and The Neptunes, and DJ/Sound Designer Dom Kane. The Slim Phattys optional wood sides, and optional rack ears are also now available in white.

The Minimoog Voyager and Minimoog Voyager XL have also been transitioned to an all white finish with reversed artwork. The pitch and mod wheel of the Minimoog Voyager XL has been upgraded to a white backlit design, which is a feature that was previously only available on the Minimoog Voyager.

Lastly, the Moogerfooger family of analog effects modules are also ghosts of their former selves. The MF-101 Lowpass FIlter, MF-102 Ring Modulator, MF-103 12 Stage Phaser, MF-104M Analog Delay, MF-105M MIDI MuRF, MF-107 Freq Box and the MF-108M Clusterflux have all been transitioned to white and are now a perfect match to the limited edition Minimoog Voyager, Voyager XL and Slim Phatty Analog Synthesizers.

These all white Moog instruments are available for a limited time at select dealers and are shipping now. International customers must check with the Moog distributor in their country for pricing and availability.

Barton Musical Circuits MWC & UWQ Eurorack Modules

MWC Demo 1

Published on Nov 13, 2012 by boogdish

"New prototype from Barton Musical Circuits. MWC = Multi-Window Comparator. Sorry for the blur, I'm working in a basement and the light's not great.

In a nutshell, this looks at your input voltage, converts it into a number, then looks that number up on a data table and turns a +5V output on if the table tells it to. It does this 4 times, for 4 different outputs. There are attenuation and offset knobs for conditioning the input signal, write/erase buttons for writing the "on/off" tables, and save/load and bank select switches for saving your tables to the internal EEPROM.

The write/erase buttons could also be replaced by input jacks so you're rhythm generating devices could write the tables. The board has euro/motm power connector pads. The board has 2 pc mounted pots, and it also has 4 mounting holes so people can feel free to create their own layout. I am going to try to offer a Eurorack front panel for this as well.

I will be writing build documentation for this soon. I'll have boards/PICs to offer for this next month, and a set will be $20 plus postage."

UWQ Demo 1

Published on Nov 13, 2012 by boogdish

"A dry boring demo of the features of a new quantizer module I've designed. More info will be up at www.bartonmusicalcircuits.com after I get it written.

To summarize: Instead of pre-loaded scales/modes, you're using write/erase buttons to create a data table that records all possible outputs, if you saw my MWC demo, this will seem familiar (I actually copy/pasted some of the code).

There are additional controls for: turning the quantizer off, triggering a new sample (it constantly samples when nothing is plugged into this jack), controlling whether the quantizer quantizes above or below the input voltage, a "softness" control which acts like a voltage controlled portamento with fun interactions with the trigger-new-sample control. It can also save two banks of notes onto the internal EEPROM. There is also a bi-polar/positive only switch so it can interact with more voltage sources.

There are input jacks for the quantized signal, a secondary cv (with attenuation pot), external softness cv (with attenuation pot), write and erase jacks for triggering from external sources, trigger-new-sample, and quantize on/off.

Finally, and I didn't get into this on the demo, the board is set up so that the range of the module is adjusted by just a couple of trim pots (an input attenuator and an output amplifier) so individual builders can decide whether they want more range or accuracy. Different people will use this differently so I'll leave it up to them. On this demo I had it set up for 10V range. The table of possible outputs has 1024 parts (because the PIC has a 10-bit ADC), so this gives me 102.4 pitches/octave. At 5V you'd get 204.8 pitches per octave.

This prototype had a few errors on the PCB, so I'm waiting for a revised PCB to show up (should be in the next couple weeks), and if I got all my errors on that, then boards should be available to ship in early to mid January. I think a board/chip combo will be $22. This uses all through hole components, and pc-mounted pots, but has mounting holes so people don't have to use the pc mounted pots. It has euro/motm power connecters and will work with +/-12v or +/-15v with no modification.

I think I'll also be selling a few of these with hand made front panels if anyone thinks this is a cool module but is intimidated by all of the wiring. This is 8HP in euro-rack."

Kinetik Laboratories Harsh Noise Generator

Published on Nov 14, 2012 by kinetiklab

"Harsh Noise Generator is a minimal sound generator, ideal sound source for your effect chain.

It has two operating modes.

In the first operation mode the frequency of two oscillators varies randomly around the value set with the knobs named FREQUENCY. The output is then processed mathematically to create additional perturbations.

Turning the unit on with the knobs rotated fully clockwise you access the second operation mode. Noise and silence are alternated with intervals that vary randomly around the value set with the DENSITY knob. The INTENSITY knob adjust the noise energy."

Modular Percussion Reason ReFill

Published on Nov 11, 2012 by Audiovapor

"Modular Percussion is a Reason Refill of unique sampled percussive sounds from a modular EuroRack synthesizer. Modular Percussion contains 581mb of content sampled at 24bit 96khz, 50 combinators, and 3 full Kong kits.

The percussive samples were created with the MakeNoise Optomix triggered by an MFB Uzewerg Pro. The sound sources were the WMD Phase Displacement Oscillator, Modcan Dual Wave, Moog Freqbox and Doepfer A-118. The Optomix is an analog, vactrol based voltage controlled Low Pass Gate. Low Pass Gates are commonly used for creating classic modular percussive timbres. The vactrol creates a natural, musical decay, perfect for percussive hits. The MFB Urzwerg Prong" the Optomix with 5 different CV damping amounts, multisampled and layered within Kong. The result is a dynamic, unique percussion soundset simply unavailable anywhere else.

The 50 LPG combinators heavily feature the Echobode and Pulsar Reason Rack Extensions. You must own the Echobode and Pulsar Rack Extensions to use these combinators properly. The combinators feature arppegiators, sequences, effects and filters that create inspirational percussive loops. The 3 Kong kits are all of the multisamples mapped across the pads.

Features:

-581mb of content sampled at 24bit, 96hz. ReFill download size is 284mb.

-50 multisampled percussive hits with 5 layers of Optomix damping (246 samples total).

-50 combinators, 3 kong kits.

-The root note of all the percussive sounds was sampled at "C" at the source. This enables the end user to tune the Kong kits to their preference, perhaps to match the key of their song. The percussion sequences are also all in the key of "C" for easier tweaking.

-For use in Reason 6.5.1 and above."

"This Model 2810 Arp Odyssey II is in mint condition and has an extremely low Serial Number of 439. Being sold by the original owner, who bought it in San Francisco January 1977 and then imported it to Australia. As Australia has a voltage of 240 Volts the instrument comes with a 240V/110V transformer..."

Note the ARP Odyssey stencil on the side. I don't believe I've seen that before.
