Heavily Modded Doepfer MS404 Analog Synth with Moog 24dB Filter

"This is a heavily modified Doepfer MS404 anlog monophonic synth, one of only two in the world. Already capable of strong bassline and leadline sounds, the mods turn this MS404 into a miniature modular system capable of some incredible sounds.

Unfortunately after being brought out of three years storage in good dry warm conditions this is no longer working. You will need a professional service to do anything useful with it, unless you intend to disassemble it for spares.

The MS404 features a single genuine analog oscillator with two waveshapes and Pulse Width Modulation, a Moog type 24dB per octave lowpass filter with full resonance, two LFO's with switchable speed ranges, ADSR and MIDI Input with Glide.

This specification makes the MS404 capable of some heavy analog bass sounds and cutting lead lines. With a similar layout to a Roland TB303 Bassline, it's not really a TB303 clone since its oscillator and filter are both much more powerful. Think more in terms of a MicroMoog in a rack.

The modifications take this MS404 to another planet. Firstly the ADSR can be bypassed so the synth drones on whatever note is played, and the VCA simply becomes a volume control. This makes the synth incredibly useful for drones and special effects sounds rather than simply bass or lead notes.

Secondly the two LFO's can both be switched from triangle to square wave - this was on the PCB as a jumper and makes a much wider variety of modulation types available.

Thirdly the output of the two LFO's can be merged so that both waveshapes reach filter and (if required) VCO. This is the killer modification, making the MS404 with its filter fully resonating sounds like the EMS VCS3 Synthi as used by Jean-Michel Jarre and by Tim Blake with Gong. Double modulation (at differing speeds) is a killer application for anyone wanting versatile analog synth abstract sound effects.

Fourthly the second LFO can repeatedly trigger the Envelope, making even more versatile effects noises and arpeggio-like patterns available.

Fifthly there's an added front panel minijack audio input to the filter making the MS404 easier to patch to a Doepfer or other modular system.

These modifications mean that this MS404 when working acts as incredible mini modular system with MIDI, in a very compact 1U 19-inch mounting.

How dead is this MS404? It powers up, so the power supply isn't burned out and there is no internal fuse to suspect. However there's currently no sound output and the LFO's appear to have stopped running. A shame, because immediately before going into storage it was sounding devastating.

You will need to be an experienced service engineer to get this working, or be willing to send it to one. You will not fix it by replacing a fuse or a loose socket. You will need someone who appreciates what the modifications are doing (they're very simple, mostly just a case of leading an existing PCB jumper out to a toggle switch).

Power cable not included (a simple IEC kettle mains lead). Knob caps not included (it had non-standard Moog-style knob caps anyway, not Doepfer system knobs). Some chassis screws missing, easily replaced.

Obviously this is sold on a no returns, absolutely no guarantees non-working basis. If fully working, it would probably fetch around £350."

"The SH7 was launched by Roland in 1978 as their flagship monosynth (although duophonic). Incorporating the filter from the Roland System 700 and offering a wealth of features, it stands as one of the iconic Roland monosynths. This is due to its oscillator power/flexibility, modulation options, punchy envelopes and sound processing capability."

Googlish:

"On Tuesday, 15.10.2013 a special honor is bestowed from 15 clock in the department of the company synthesizer music store. On the third floor, with excellent views of the Cologne Cathedral, are none other than Dieter Doepfer, Andreas Schneider and Wouter Jaspers visit us during the Renaissance, and analog to perform a comprehensive workshop and training program. Dieter Doepfer is demonstrated in two workshops on the subject of analog sound generation modular system, even for beginners, the second part then Advanced.

Andreas Schneider on the day dedicated to the theme of "Modular systems as a public interaction - The Carousel," an installation specially created by him, which we will place on the day in the lobby of the Music Store.

Wouter Jaspers is from the coma electronics company, apposition of these two priorities, an overview, which he is now considering. Besides the NEUVORSTELLUNG his pedal RH301 he will arrive with modular systems to introduce, among other works, and the sound of his SVF201 Eurorack module.
To participate in the workshops with Dieter Doepfer we ask for a short email to synth@musicstore.de in order to ensure an appropriate sequence can."

Rhodes and Minimoog jam

Epic Jupiter 8 and MS-20 jam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jrTje...

Had a little jam in my home studio in Wellington, NZ - testing out doing some video, which I've never done before. I'm on my Rhodes Mark II 88 through the RE-201 Space Echo (which is disengaged) into a Fender 75 tube amp with a 15" cone. On left hand is a Minimoog Model D straight into the desk. I should've probably opened a filter a wee bit but I couldn't hear it properly (had it low volume through an amp so it wouldn't bleed into the amp mic). Ah well.

I do lots of recording work here in NZ and I'm looking to expand internationally (the wonders of the internet). Contact me here or on the email address at the end of the video if you are interested. I also have a couple of Hammond Organs and Leslies, a Clavinet, a Korg MS-20, and a Roland Jupiter 8. Oh and an upright Yamaha piano."

Minimoog jam over 'Tuff Puffin'

"..as Puffin birds generally aren't that tough, I thought I'd pay homage to the anomaly - the TUFF Puffin. So tough he can't even spell tough. Now that's tough.

Made a new beat with Billy Martin's drums off the 'Illy B Eats' box set and my MS-20 (you'll need more than laptop speakers to hear the bass) and thought I'd have a little blat over it on the Minimoog. The Mini is going through an Electro-Harmonix Cathedral stereo reverb pedal in 'echo' mode which in stereo gives a ping pong delay effect. Naice."

MS-20, Jupiter 8, Space Echo and drums jam

Published on May 24, 2012

"The second installment! I got lazy with editing but I made sure Humphrey got in there! Anyway it's my Korg MS-20, Roland Jupiter 8 through a Roland RE-201 Space Echo, and Cory Champion on drums. That's his actual name. Pretty sweet. We improvised a wee spacey beaty jam for your ears. Once again if you would like to hire a squire for some keys or drums hit me up on the email address at the end. I can put you onto Cory too. Peace!"
