After Hours - Three synth Jams

Published on Mar 3, 2016 GForce Software

"Good hardware and good software should always play well together.

Here are three examples of what we get up to after-hours as the sun sets and we start to wind down. The first two tracks are totally live improvisations using both software and hardware instruments, while the third track was initially recorded as a live 808, Oberheim 8 Voice & Modular synth jam, before several extra overdubs were added.; again, some software and some hardware.

Because it all has to come from the music, we don't only use GForce plug-ins either and here you'll find other good food from plug-ins such as Soundiron's Emotional Piano, Spectrasonics' Omnisphere & Stylus, iZotope's Iris, plus the AAS Lounge Lizard (through iZotope's wonderful DDLY), all sitting alongside impOSCar2, Minimonsta and Oddity2.

For the hardware fetishists, instruments include the Roland Jupiter 8, Oberheim 8 Voice, Prophet 5, Yamaha CS-80, Roland TR-808, Minimoog, Moog Sub37, EMS AKS, Simmons SDS-V, Roland SH-101 and a modular synth so special we daren't speak its name.

All music by GForce's Dave Spiers."

'Moog is a regal breed of synthesisers that are slightly untamable, which is why we (musicians) love them. Always on the edge of boiling over; taming one’s Minimoog was like riding a wild mustang, and bringing it to heel. When the polyphonic Moog Memorymoog first appeared in 1982, it was like having a team of six mustangs pulling a stage coach, its power was thrilling, and everybody had better get off the road to let it through...

'Its name was derived from the Apollo-era, onboard computer memory needed to save patches - once one had laboured with its 18 oscillators, modulation possibilities, and the gorgeous ‘Mooginess’ that lives within its filter circuits. The sheer amount of electronics under the hood of a Memorymoog made it literally pump out hot air; making her prone to pit stops and custom updates as the years went by.

'I first met Matthew Bourne, a prodigious improvising pianist, who was fascinating to watch as he took that conventional instrument ‘off road’ in an emotional sweat. Post-gig, and still wild-eyed, he made a beeline for me, having heard that I also owned a Memorymoog. Matt was keen to compare notes, and to discuss the fact that he was having the Lintronics Advanced Memorymoog (LAMM) conversion done to his (this is the Memorymoog equivalent of open heart surgery, which replaces 1,300 components over eight weeks of bench time, costing as much as a new machine). I immediately thought that Matt was insane. Some years later, moogmemory is Matt’s paean to this living, breathing machine. No other instruments are used on the album, and its capabilities are drawn out by this extremely empathetic musician: beautiful, brooding landscapes of thick impasto to translucent sunbursts; Dr. Bob would be proud!'

"No external computers or hardware were used in this performance. Single take with no editing. :)

A patch built around the new “Stillson Hammer MKII” by Industrial Music Electronics used for melodic content and bass line sequencing.

https://www.modulargrid.net/e/the-harvestman-stillson-hammer-mkii

Patch basics:

Sequencers used are the Industrial Music Electronics Stilton Hammer MKII (SHMKII), Tiptop Audio Circadian Rhythms (CR) and Intellijel Metropolis.

Chords: Make Noise tELHARMONIC sequenced by the SHMKII which is synced to the CR. clock is internally divided by 8 on the SHMKII. The change in chord harmonics is by way of increasing the level sent to the Tiptop ZDSP which is running the shimmer verb card by Valhalla DSP. Filtering fun with the Cwejman MMF-1.

Bass: this is the Roland 521 and 512 sequenced by the SHMKII and processed through the L-1 Stereo Micro Compressor.

Lead Melody: Intellijel Atlantis Sequenced by the SHMKII and processed through the Qu-Bit RT60.

Acid: Intellijel Rubicon with Cwejman MMF-1 sequenced by the Intellijel Atlantis which is synced to the SHMKII. modulation to filter and envelopes from the XOAC Batumi with Poki, Maths and Tiptop z8000. (happy fake 303 day ;)

Kick: Blue Lantern Asteroid BDv4 sequenced by the CR.

Snare: Hex Inverter Mutant Clap sequenced by the CR. FX throws to the Mungo D0, Make Noise Erbe Verb and SSF/WMD DPLR

Metallic Clangs: Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas sequenced by the CR with FX throws to the Modcan Dual Delay in dual tap which is synced to the SHMKII. Modulation from the XOAC Batumi.

Percussion 1: hex Inverter Mutant Snare sequenced by the CR.

Percussion 2: ALM Dinkys Taiko Sequenced by the CR.

"The Yamaha VL7 is a monophonic Virtual Acoustic Synthesizer with 49 keys. The unit is in excellent condition, and the OS is version 2 . I have included a Yamaha BC3 Breath Controller. I am also including a bottle of mouthpiece disinfectant; had to make sure the BC3 worked, but also needed to keep it sanitary! Please spray the mouthpiece before using it the first time. I downloaded the manuals and printed them. I realized when the printing was almost finished I hadn't set the printer pages for 'double-sided' printing, so the manuals are a bit thick.
