Elektronische Musik with Tape & Microsound Music Machine

Published on Dec 11, 2019

"In the early 1950s, there was a brief competition between Elektronische Musique, made exclusively from electronically generated sounds, and Musique Concréte, which focused on recorded sounds from the so-called real world. In this video we will generate and manipulate purely synthetic sounds using the Tape & Microsound Music Machine.

Karlheinz Stockhausen - Studie I

Published on Jul 9, 2013 pelodelperro

"Studie I, electronic music (1953)

The composition was created in the Cologne Studio for Electronic Musik of the NWDR between July and November 1953. In the final stages of editing, Stockhausen commemorated the birth of his first daughter, Suja, on 25 September 1953 by inserting a "serially unauthorized" 108 Hz (in a phrase attributed to Richard Toop), "one-gun salute". The world premiere took place in Cologne on 19 October 1954 in the concert series Musik der Zeit, together with Stockhausen's Studie II and works by Henri Pousseur, Karel Goeyvaerts, Herbert Eimert, and Paul Gredinger.

The work was important amongst other reasons because it was made (as were the works by Pousseur, Goeyvaerts, and Gredinger) not with the use of (electronic) instruments, like the Trautonium or Melochord, but rather out of pure sine tones. For the first time, complete compositional control was achieved, even over timbre. The ideal was to produce each sound synthetically and thus separately determined in its details: The conscious organization of music extends to the micro-acoustic sphere of the sound material itself. It is serially organized on all musical. [wikipedia.org]

This is a follow-up to the SEM, MS20, and SH-101 notepad posts. Someone in the comments of the recent SEM post mentioned they were available with a ton of other items in their Etsy shop. Note they do have some gear listed on eBay as well, so check it out of interested. Etsy only allows craft items.

Pictured here are the EMS SYNTHI sticky notes, synth keychains and Roland 808, 909, 303, and 606 inspired erasers and card holders. As always, saving this stuff as a record of what was out there at the time...

"We meticulously refurbished this 2600 in an attempt to future proof it and to make it better than others you may find. This included the following work:

Replaced all faders and slider caps with brand new ones, so all faders work great, with no crackle at all (our cost for these parts was nearly $500)
Rebuilt power supply in an attempt to greatly extend its life.
Replaced synth section handle with similar one.
Replaced tantalum caps as a preventative measure to greatly extend this units life.
Replaced reverb tank rubber bushings.
Replaced rubber bushings in keyboard.
Cleaned keyboard J-wires and bus bars.
Resoldered feet of all modules.
Replaced Cinch Jones connector.
Replaced 3 4027-1 and 1 4015 submodules with our tech's exact replicas so future repairs will be possible (the originals are sealed and cannot be opened for servicing).
Corrected mistakes made at the factory (a couple connections were never soldered!)
The tolex was a bit chewed up along the edges, so we used a black marker to color the wood where it was showing. Replacing the tolex is possible but we're unfortunately not set up to do that here, so we will leave that decision up to the buyer.
Lengthy burn in test, systematically tested multiple times and working perfectly.
...and more.

This work required a total of 30 hours of skilled labor.

The synth section comes with a lid, though it appears to have come from a later 2600 as the tolex does not match. The keyboard section comes without a lid. Sale includes power cord and new Cinch Jones keyboard connector cable."
