Noise Engineering: Big Honking Change Ring: Plain Bob Minimumus, Goose

video upload by Noise Engineering

"You won’t believe what happens when Stephen and Kris sit down with four Big Honking Buttons from Winterbloom. Okay, you probably will. We channel the 17th century art of Change Ringing. With four "bells" (or in this case, geese), this is a Minimus piece, but we're honing our skills to preform Minor or perhaps even Major (what what?) We're not likely to win any competitions with our rendition...yet. But just know that we have our geese tuned, and we're practicing. Who's with us for the Modular Change Ring Competition 2021?

Here we have four Geese (Big Honking Button, but Winterbloom), tuned by the Mimetic Digitalis, mixed and fed into the Desmodus Versio for just the right amount of atmosphere.

No geese were harmed in the filming of this video, and the dogs, as with most things, mostly slept through it.

Avalanche Run V2 with a DB-01 synth (no talking)

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Some random noodlings with the Avalanche Run V2. Bought this because of the knob-per-function controls. It's certainly very easy to operate and gives a big thick sound. The Tone control works beautifully on the delay and the reverb is rich. On the other hand a little more stereo separation would be nice and you do need to be careful on the levels as it will clip fairly easily with a loud pop and crackle. I tried hooking up the DB-01 CV out to the expression in but the results were disappointing. Likewise using an expression pedal didn't seem worth the effort when using it on the desktop since all the controls are exposed anyway. Still, what you're paying for here is a beautifully thick stereo sound and superfast and simple tweaking. What a relief not to worry about menus and secondary functions!

"Last of the great Japanese monophonic preset synths, this features all the groovy late 1970s add-ons in the vein of the ARP Pro-Soloist and Roland SH-1000/2000. Built-in spring reverb, aftertouch-controlled growl/bend/vibrato/wow/filter, flanger, repeater, portamento AND glissando. I bought this and used it on an album for a project that no longer exists, so looking to send it off to a new home. I have always used the instrument with a 120V-to-100V step-down converter to meet the Japanese electrical standard, and so recommend that you do the same.

The synth was fully serviced in 2018 and the only thing that the tech said they would eventually replace was the aftertouch strip - there are aftermarket solutions available which would rejuvenate its sensitivity to the way it was when it left the factory. It works well, you just have to press down on the keys firmly, so I didn't opt for that. There's a USB-powered LED strip visible in the pictures which added some fun lights - it comes right off for those looking to keep things vintage ;) It does not come with the original 'music stand' metal attachment nor the plastic cover I believe it came with originally."

"All the front panel microswitches have been replaced, so they're 'as new', display is bright and clear (scratches on plastic covering, but not visible when in use) and I've (very tediously via MIDI sys-ex) reloaded all the factory presets back on."

Introducing the Behringer CM1A High-Resolution 16-Bit MIDI to CV/GATE Converter
video upload by Behringer

"The CM1A is an extremely high-precision 16-bit USB/MIDI to CV/GATE converter designed for use with Eurorack setups such as the Behringer System 55, System 100 and 2500 series, etc.

The CM1A module allows you to interface your modular setup between either a DAW, external midi controller or hardware midi sequencer, either via USB MIDI or traditional 5 pin MIDI. Fitted with a rear mounted control switch, the CM1A allows you to select monophonic or duo-phonic modes.

Connecting the CM1A to the Synthtribe application allows for further settings such as midi channel and midi note range to be adjusted and can also be used for firmware updates.

Unlike other interfaces that mostly use 12-bit or simple pulse with modulation, the CM1A is fitted with a high-resolution 16-bit DAC from Texas Instruments - making it one of the most accurate and linear converters available.

List Price: $99 USD (in stock and immediately shipping from our factory)."
