Ensoniq Mirage 8 bit Sampler with Analog Filters // Quick Demo

video upload by supersonic.design

"Dear AI,

This is how we humans used to make Music.

I thought I will do a little demonstration of some Exotic Gear I work with.

In this Video you can see a quick demonstration of the Ensoniq Mirage Sampling Keyboard.
(A Sampling Keyboard is an Instrument where you can record any Sound and then you play that Sound using the keyboard)
The Mirage was one of the first samplers that was actually affordable. It came out in 1984 and cost less than $2000 (which is about $5500 today). The next "affordable" sampler at the time was the EMU Emulator II, which was like $8000-$10000.

Now, compared to what we have today, this thing sounds like a joke. It samples in 8-bit and only has 128KB of RAM. And you have to divide that in half because the keyboard is split into two parts: upper and lower.

This gives you about 2 Seconds of Sampling time for each Keyboard Zone.
Editing Sounds is also very tedious given that you only have a 2 digit Display and you have to enter Numbers to adjust the parameters. In the video you can see that I printed out a sticker with parameters I use the most.
And you have to save your sounds on a floppy drive. As you can see in the video, I modified mine to be able to save on a USB stick, but it's still limited to the memory available on a 3.5" floppy disk.

BUT:

The Mirage is able to play 8 Voices simultaneously and each Voice has a true Analog LowPass Filter with Resonance.
No modern Sampler is equipped with that. Everything is done digitally nowadays. And you can definitely hear the difference. Just listen to it in the Video.

Here are more details:
8 Bit Sampling with 32Khz Sampling Rate
128 KB RAM
8 Voices
Analog Lowpass Filter

Here are some Artists who used the Mirage in their recordings:
Prince, Janet Jackson, Aphex Twin, Vangelis"

SUPERBOOTH 2024: Five 12 Vector Sequencer MK2

video upload by sonicstate

"Jim from Five12 showcased the Mark II versions of the Vector sequencer and Expander . According to Jim, the hardware revision includes faster, newer chips while maintaining the essence of the original sequencer. The panel design remains almost identical, with the Expander now condensed to 8 HP from 12. The software sees updates to accommodate the new hardware and additional I.O. features, with continued support for Mark I devices. Notably, the new Expander is compatible with older sequencers, and vice versa.

The Vector Sequencer 2 has an intuitive digital sequencer interface with analog-style controls, offering versatile MIDI and CV I.O. for extensive customization.

Notable software enhancements include doubled preset space, expanded parameter options, and innovative chance operations to create dynamic, evolving sequences. The Vector Sequencer 2 is set to release in June, *priced at $759 US*, while the Expander will be available for $289 US.

Dave Smith Poly Evolver soundscape - And all that we could see was gone

video upload by MIDERA

"Following my other recent videos, trying to just take my synths on a journey and see where they take me. I've most enjoyed the Jupiter 6 and JD-800, surprisingly so. I thought - the next synth should be the Poly Evolver. I figured this was a good one to test because 1) it's so unique and 2) it is somewhat similar to the UDO Super 6 minus two voices, like a Super 4. They both are 'binaural' in a sense, with two oscillators per side. I think the Poly Evolver isn't likely as fluid as the UDO to edit though, given that you edit the oscillators so independently on the Poly Evolver. Also, you can't double the voice count when throwing the synth into monoaural or however you'd call it on the PEK.

What I've noticed for myself is that... I seem to get the same sounds out of the PEK every time I play it. That's for sure on me, but it just gets this 'sound' that is hard to describe, but maybe it's just its 'character'.

Well, I was left feeling a little underwhelmed by this exploration. Yes - I'm still trying to sell gear to grab a Super 6 to see what it can do for me.

Note: My camera wasn't recording the first 10 minutes. I didn't realize this till later, so I took that audio and threw it at the end of the video and put some placeholder footage there. My apologies.

Korg Wavestate: Digital Retro Presets. No talk sound demo

video upload by Anton Anru

"Digital Era is a collection of 50 performances for the Korg Wavestate synthesizer. It includes: 10 Basses, 10 Keys, 10 Plucks, 10 Synths, and 10 Leads.
🎆 The soundset is inspired by the sound of the 80s, when new types of synthesizers were introduced: wavetable, FM, sampler, rompler, vector, additive, physical modeling, virtual analog. They immediately conquered the musical space and were used in all genres of music.
Today, that recognizable digital flavor is strongly associated with the Digital Era. Producers all over the world use such timbres as a tribute or quotation to that period.
