Synthfest | UK - 3rd Wave Librarian and Editor

video upload by Starsky Carr

"Fresh back from Synthfest UK, and Bob Coover from Groove Synthesis was there holding court all day, so rather than make my own demo of the brand new 3rd Wave Terminal, I let him walk you through it himself.

The 3rd Wave Terminal is Groove Synthesis's new librarian and patch editor for the 3rd Wave — and it's FREE once you register your instrument. It works with the 3rd Wave keyboard, the 24-voice desktop and the 8M module.

Short version: none of this adds to what the 3rd Wave already does — it just makes the whole thing far easier to get at. And if you've got the 8M or a desktop, having every parameter on screen at once is a genuinely big deal.

Thanks to Bob Coover and Groove Synthesis, and to Sound On Sound for putting on Synthfest UK."

Can you build a playable synthesizer in a single afternoon?

video upload by Illegal State Of Mind

"Can you build a playable synthesizer in a single afternoon? Here's my attempt: a DIY synth built from a basic ESP32 I had lying around.

At its heart is a DCO: a digitally controlled oscillator. The waveform isn't generated in code. It comes straight from the PWM outputs, while the code only sets the pitch, pulse width and modulation. The result is a fat, raw, monophonic sound with accurate notes and no tuning headaches.

How this ESP32 synth works:
• Two PWM signals from GPIO 18 and 19
• A simple resistor mixer and a capacitor on the output
• MIDI input built around a 6N137 optocoupler, three resistors and a socket (powered from the ESP32 board)
• Pitch Bend and Modulation over MIDI
• Pulse width and detune of the second oscillator controlled by knobs

What this synthesizer doesn't have (yet): an envelope, polyphony and a filter. They can all be added later in the analog part of the signal path, and I'll start working on them soon."

DataJam Demo Weird

video upload by Cycles & Spots

"Made in the DataJam app on iPad (added to Home Screen, no browser). Same app runs in any browser.

Try it free: https://www.deepdataloops.com/datajam/"

Make music in your browser.

DataJam combines a groovebox and a DAW in your browser, with the ideas of our Reaktor instruments built in: play the pads live or from a keyboard, layer loops, play them granular, or cut them into slices and scramble them to play in random, ever-changing patterns – and finish full tracks, from the first pad to the final export. Works with the sample packs from Deep Data Loops, on iPad, iPhone, Android and computer. Nothing to download: use it in your browser, or add it to your tablet, phone or computer as an app, straight from the browser.

8 channels x 12 pads
One-shots and loops from the packs, ready on the pads. Swap any sample with a long press (right-click on a computer).

Sequencer and Arranger
Four patterns per channel, up to 8 bars, velocity per step, and an arranger to build a whole song – or let Auto arrange build one from your patterns.

Loop, Granular, Chop
Turn any loop into a cloud of grains, or slice it and play or scramble the slices, tempo-synced. Chain loops to play one after another.

Mixer and effects
Faders, a channel volume fader, mute/solo, reverb, delay, tape, filter with LFO and a 3-band EQ per pad.

Record your moves
Volume, filter, pitch, sends and more can be recorded as automation while the pattern plays.

Export your track
Record the mix as one WAV, or every channel as a separate stem in a ZIP.

Introducing TEIA Synthesizers, from the West Coast of Portugal, EU.

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

You can find additional posts feturing TEIA Synthesizers here.

"In this video, I am honored to introduce TEIA synthesis, which has been under my radar. TEIA comes from the creative cradle of ADDAC systems which most of us know. Apparantly, they decided to follow their love for westcoast synthesis in the spirit of Don Buchla, while adding their own signature to it. As far as my opinion matters, they did a really good job. I'd be covering their DriftLog randomizer and the VastWave VCO, which is kind of an 'odd ball'. It's probably the only Complex VCO with only one core, while in my 'rulebook' it requires both a modulator and a principal side. But I think they nailed it. It's basically a principal VCO with basic waveforms, PWM and the typical FINAL out which supports timbre, harmonics and folding. There's an FM and MOD bus (timbre IN) and it supports hard- and soft sync. So it checks all boxes except for the Modulator VCO, which they offer as a small separate unit, or - if you wish - a second principal.

Pricewise, it would put it in the same expensive league as a full dual VCO, but any Function Generator with audio rate capability can double as a modulator. So I'd be using MakeNoise Function or Maths. This video turned out to be a cool excercise in modular patching with limited modules and some help from the DAW. It's been a wonderful journey."

Erae 2 Sequencer: Complete Walkthrough

video upload by embodme

"Discover the built-in step sequencer of the Erae 2 — and what makes it different: you don't just program notes, you draw expression.

🎛 One sequencer per element
Every element in your layout gets its own sequencer — as many sequencers as elements. Build a drum pattern, a bassline and a lead on the same surface, each with its own steps, length and expression.

🎶 Works with custom scales
Sequencers also run on elements using custom scales: exotic scales, non-tempered and microtonal tunings, Scala-compatible. Program patterns in maqam, just intonation or any tuning you design in Erae Lab.

In this tutorial:
• Entering the sequencer and navigating the grid
• Programming notes step by step
• Drawing pressure curves directly on the surface
• Recording in real time and setting pattern length & resolution
• Using the 8 pattern slots
• Switch Mode: Wait vs Jump for live pattern changes
• Playing live on top of your sequence
