"Monophonic synthesizer Altair 231 (Estradin factory, Zhitomir city, 1986 year) have a four-octave keyboard and a wheel to pitch control. The instrument consists of four main blocks of sound synthesis - Generator, Mixer, Filter and Contour.

Synthesis is based on 3 master oscillators. Each of them with different parameters of registers: waveform, frequency modulation. There is also a generator of white and pink noise. Low-pass filter with main parameters gives the possibility for keyboard tracking. Portamento adjustment knob is provided. To tune a pitch the tone signal is used (440Hz)."

ALTAIR-231

images via this auction. via Douglas

"Altair-231 - is a monophonic 3-osc power synthesizer, mega rare unit, military sound, unique design, best of soviet-era quality synth, filters better than classic Moog synths. Produced by Estradin, millitary radio plant in Zhitomir, USSR in 1985. My machine was all time in not smoking studio. All original parts included, such as: original transport case and external pedal for volume control.
Synth has 4-oct keyboard (F-C) with velocity (sensitivity assign to vibrato effect). For live performance there is a wheel which provides pitch shift.
Synthesizer is based on 3 VCO (any can work as the modulator), 1 VCF (lowpass 24dB/oct) with ADSR, 1 VCA, 3 LFO, noise generator (white/pink), portamento. Consist of 5 main sections - MODULATION, OSC'S, MIXER, FILTER and AMP (called Contour)."

ALTAIR 231-Soviet MiniMoog Model D SN 3346

"Altair 231 is an almost identical copy of the famous Moog Minimoog, made in the former Soviet Union. Biggest difference in sound is caused by different brand of components: Russian equivalents are used everywhere. The oscillator board is based on the older version. However, the Russians were clever and used multi-turn potentiometers for the scaling controls. Result: Synth stays in tune better. The Russians didn't seem to have reverse log pots. Because of that, the resonance control was wired backwards and a regular logarithmic pot was used instead. Other than that, the synth seems to be very robust and easy to service - the real Mini schematics come for good help when comparing the component numbers etc. It sounds like a Mini!"

"It was manufacture on 'Estradin' military radio plant in Zhitomir city in November 1986. The serial number of the unit -3345."

ALISA 1387 - analog Synthesizer from Russia - Amazing Filter and FM! by Darth NoiseLab

Published on Jan 21, 2014 NoiselabCH·6 videos

"Some testing with the amazing ALISA 1387 synthesizer, monophonic and fully analog, this beast is capable of some weird sounds, basses, effects, drones. It's not warm like a moog or other western or japanese synthesizers, it's harsh, sometimes brutal, syncing the 2nd OSC to the 1st is a real sharp weapon, as is the crazy filter, however somewhat less squeezing as the one on the POLIVOKS/POLYVOX.

NO ADDITIONAL EFFECTS, recorded from an eden bassamp into an IPhone

Here's the best: The ALISA 1387 comes with CV/GATE in/out on bord, just need to find an DIN-to-whatever adapter. As far as I know, it's the only russian analog synth having these built in. This makes it really really great !! Driven by a DOEPFER MAQ 16/3 in this case.

Above all it seems the ALISA 1387 is less prone to fail or broke of it's case, as the Polivoks and the Altair 231 tend to do (at least ours did). Most amateurs of russian synthesizers tend to declare the POLIVOKS, sometimes the AELITA as the best sounding vintage USSR synth. Both are often called the russian Minimoog, wich is clearly wrong, no one come close, but the ALTIR 231/ESTRADIN 230 (both have identical schematics) are clearly the candidates, as they have very similar schematics to the moog and are obviously a try to copy the king of synthesizers, without sounding like a MINIMOOG of course.

So in my view the ALISA 1387 formerly built in the Lyuberetskiy factory (1989 or the one presented), is clearly the most underrated and a unique sounding vintage soviet synth. It's pretty rare however, but still sold cheaper than other russian synthesizers...

Be the synthforce with you, Darth NoiseLab"
