DIY Analog Synth Workshops
The presentation of the Befaco collective in the Berlin scene and the first modular synth praxis workshop will be next November 21st/22nd.
We will be building some of our standalone devices like:

•Slicer V3: An hybrid between an analog Cv/gate sequencer, a scanning slider VCO and an audio slicer.

Quad-T: A small drum synth based on the famous twin-t oscillator used in a lot of drum machines in the analog golden era.

Cacophonator 6DE
This kit is a Cacophonator II, originally designed by Arthur Harrison, the circuit is based in IC 40106, which has six trigger schmidt that, properly connected, generate 6 square wave oscillators. In the links section you can find technical information from original design.

Four of these oscillators are directly connected to the output, creating a weird sonic hodgepodge. The other two have a different polarization and are LFOs, but they have no sound output. They're there just to bothe the other oscillators. (Yes, to bother them!) !But how? Here's the fun of this circuitr: Power starvation. When the IC has it's power lowered the trigger Schmidt gates from 40106 start behaving funny in a struggle for power. The two extra oscillators do not have audio output, but affect the sound of the other as they also demand a share of the power. The circuit has a high value capacitor, which allows this circuit to be used turned off. With a press of the button that capacitor is charged and will act as power source. As charge on the capacitor falls, Oscillators will slowly die, producing tasty weird sounds.

Audio input is directly connected to Osc 4, where will affect this oscillator and will also be added to the output. This option works great when starvation is high, when plugging a rythmic signal in, you will hear the 6DE generating synchronized noises.

Befaco micro analog percussion set

via Befaco

"We are enormously proud to introduce this micro analog percussion set, bound to be loved by those players who prefer the feel of metal tracks over plastic than the harshness of leather pads. Mongo Santamaría would have saved litres of sweat had he come across this pocket instrument, which can be played simply by tapping your fingers onto the 4 metal networks on the board!

You can build one by attending our March 18th workshop. To sign up, write to befacosynth [at] gmail.com"

Befaco SDIY February Course in Advanced Synthesis

"Befaco SDIY collective based on Barcelona will hold during February a course in advanced sound synthesis, taught by Juan Bermudez Costa.

Bermudez Costa is one of the precursors of DIY sound electronics in Spain, renowned by his articles in “Musica y tecnologia” magazine (now disappeared) and his book “Nueva generacion de instrumentos musicales electronicos” (New generation of electronic musical instruments) published in 1977 and recently reviewed and freely republished trough the Web.(it is in Spanish Download it here)

This workshop will focus on sound synthesis through analogue synths, with special interest in sound physics and its electronic source.

The course will take place 5 pm to 9 pm every Tuesday and Thursday in February (45 taught hours) . All didactic materials, including vintage and contemporary synths for practical purposes, will be provided by the organization.

The collective will also organize other electronic workshops were you can build a modular synth, a Theremin, an electronic drum, and an analog chorus "Elkorus" based on the ARP solina string ensemble. No previous skills needed

Check for dates on Befaco.org

Befaco BF-20 vs Korg MS-20

YouTube Uploaded by jorditalleda on Jun 25, 2011

"Two weeks ago, at our workshop in Barcelona, we started assembling the first units of our latest module: a very faithful replica of the legendary LP/HP filter of the MS 20.

The most demanding part of the design was reproducing the Korg 35, a dedicated IC found at the heart of the original filter. To be able to clone the filter, we first had to clone the IC! It consists of a mini PCB, so small we had to use SMD components for the first time (the people that attended our workshop had a blast! )

The clone of the chip is 100% compatible with the original filter, so it can be used as a part for repairing real MS-20′s!"

Via Befaco:

"Our friend Jordi made a video of these two analog titans challenging each other, face to face… he does get the Befaco modular, although with a very different architecture from the MS-20, to reproduce some of its most characteristic sounds quite faithfully.

Here’s what Jordi told us about the patch:

-BF-20 volume almost at maximum (the horizontal pot’s level line pointing to the right);
-HPF up, LPF down;
-From the Envelope Generator I sent an env. to two attenuators. They then go to the CV control inputs of the LPF and HPF. This way I can simulate the function of the MS-20 that allows you to adjust the amount of ADSR that affects each of the filters;
-I used a separate envelope for the VCA, and gave it more Decay than the filters;
-I used a VCO + sub-oscilator, to get a good squarewave;
-The other VCO went directly to the filter input, summing a sawtooth to the squarewave. This way I can get the two VCO’s to sound a bit detubned, as is often the case with the MS-20. If I use only one VCO, the result isn’t as fat as the MS-20."

In this workshop we provide all the necessary parts and tools for building your own modular from scratch without previous electronic skills. The modular nature of the machine makes modular the workshop too, so you can choose what modules you like more, and make any one any day. The good news are from this month until July, we will be also giving this workshop in Madrid. The next dates are...

Barcelona: 14/15 May, 11/12 Jun, 2/3 July, 16/17 July, 30/31 July

Befaco - Barcellona SDIY Collective

via Diego:

"We are a new Synth Diy collective based on Barcelona. As main activity we are making Modular synth workshops. In this workshop each one builds his own machine. Each month we prepare two workshops one with a new module an other you can choose between any of the previous. The modules we have until now are: VCO,VCF, Envelope generator (based on buchla 281), quad VCA, ring modulator, noise generator and power supply. but the list is in progress."
